To buy a wedding dress 1/2 sizes too small

nailnc · 14/07/2024 22:22

I am a size 10 on top and some bottoms, but a size 12 in jeans.

The wedding dress I have fallen in love with is over budget at £2,300. The thought of spending that on a dress makes me wince.

I have found the exact dress, second hand, in perfect condition, for £800. But it's a size 8. It hasn't been altered.

Wedding is 14 months away.

AIBU to buy it and diet and exercise my way into it? Or more accurately, am I being stupid?

I did it. Was a size 14. Bought a size 8 wedding dress. I did manage to diet into it. It keeps you motivated spending that much money and not being able to afford another dress!

Gcsunnyside23 · 14/07/2024 23:07

No I wouldn't do it, wedding dress sizes aren't the same. If you said a 10 o would have thought you could try but it'll be more an 8. I would look at sample sakes instead. My wedding dress was 400 instead of 2800. There were so many beautiful options.

As others have said, most designer wedding dresses are small fitting. If you’re a proper size 10 you’ll likely need a 12 or even 14 depending on the style and fit. An 8 will be tiny. You could get it let out, though it’s always easier to take them in. I’d keep looking and buy bigger.

Ask for actual dress measurements. Some people say wedding dresses come up smaller but I wore the same size as I do in normal clothes.

This. Dress sizes vary a lot. The last thing you need is a lot of pressure in the run up to a big event. What would your plan be if it didn't fit close to the wedding?

This!! I was a small size 10 when I got married. My dress was a 14. Totally depends on the style and material.

It's worth considering Wed2b too OP.

You buy the dress on the day so there's no lead in time for ordering, and the prices are very reasonable (you'd have lots of options for £800).

It's worth a shot, just go in and you can try 4 dresses in a visit. The staff there are so helpful, they could suggest something you'd never think of and it could be perfect on you.

I went there on the insistence of my friend and bridesmaid, who had got her dress there. I ended up buying the first dress I tried, it was perfect. And so much cheaper than the typical bridal shops. Really good quality too.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/07/2024 23:33

If its the same make and style as the one you tried on and fell in love with - what size was that, and how snugly did it fit?
What size jeans you wear is far less relevant if wedding dresses tend to come up small.

leopardski · 14/07/2024 23:42

Nope, wedding dress sizes are so small (I was a size 10 when I got married and had to order a medium with slight adjustments).

See if you can try on that designers dresses somewhere to get a feel for the sizing and at least then you know what you need if you do keep looking preloved!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 14/07/2024 23:45

Don't do it. Find a dress you lobe that fits you now. There are, millions of them.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 14/07/2024 23:48

Have you tried a version of the dress on? IME Wedding dress sizes bear absolutely no resemblance to other clothes sizes - I am a size 16 in most clothes and my wedding dress was a size 24!!!

Do it

Horrible advice. Do not do this op.

Firstly, you'll want to get the dress altered so you'll need room for them to do that as needed. Plus wedding dresses tend to run small. Do you really want to put yourself under so much stress and pressure in the run up to your wedding when you could just be enjoying it? I wouldn't do it.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 14/07/2024 23:50

I mean I don’t know - I sized down for my dress. if
you think-it could motivate you …

nailnc · 15/07/2024 00:13

I'm trying a version of it on next weekend so will have a better idea then.

I know wedding dress sizes come up small, this is dress fits a normal high street size 8. I was a size 8 up until the age of about 21. So 6 years ago for me.

It's actually not a dress... it's a bodysuit and a skirt. I should have mentioned this. It looks like a dress when put together. I think it could be easily let out due to the lace, I will attach a pic.

I'm erring on the side of getting it in a size up. It's just so much more money. Waaah!

I'm a size 8-10 , my wedding dress was a size 12. I lost 10lbs before the day and I still don't think a 10 would have fitted me

DownWhichOfLate · 15/07/2024 06:58

Measurements! I wore a size 8 wedding dress with a 34” bust, 26” waist. So for me it was true to size. Lovely dress!

This place has the bodysuit for £233 in a size 10. https://www.vickisbride.co.uk/collection/lisa-bodysuit

The skirt looks pretty ubiquitous - if you can't find one for less than £2000, a good bridal seamstress could probably make one for you very similar.

Do this!

Also, if you've not tried it on yet, you might not even like it. Ask at the shop when their sample (if it fits) sales will be. When I was looking for my dress, loads of the shops did a smaller sale in autumn. Most of the dress shops I went to had their samples in either a 10or 12 (normal dress size)

Whosaysyoucanthaveitall · 15/07/2024 07:07

I did this, bought my dress full price but sized down. It was the only time I’ve managed to be disciplined enough to stick to a diet and workout plan. I was a 14 but ordered a 12, which is actually more like a 10 high street sizes.

Agreed that this looks sensible. I think the skirt looks perfectly doable by a seamstress - perhaps with a a circle skirt or similar if you wanted as that might be flatter (and potentially more flattering) on the waist.

A bit against the grain but if it's truly one size down plus has a very full skirt that should be doable, if it's a size you've been before and would like to be again. Is it far from you, maybe the seller would let you come and try on without doing up?

Looks like the one 👏👏👏

You might still need to get a size 10 altered but its much more possible if the dress is closer to your actual size.

CaputDraconis · 15/07/2024 07:38

Before committing please try the dress on somewhere else.

Unless you are close to 6ft tall and will be wearing high heels you will probably be at least a foot shorter than the model in the dress so it will look completely different proportion wise.

Flopsy145 · 15/07/2024 07:51

Wedding dresses are often sized very small so it may say 8 but fit like a 6. If its feasible for you and you've been that weight before then you've got plenty of time to safely lose the weight you want. You could always get it but keep looking for a 10 and then resell the 8 if you do find it in your size.
