To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

I think he thought he would be able to get closer. I just thank God he did not have a scope. A dozen or more could have died.

This is not to you @Munter :
Of course, some would find that justifiable and quite okay. Please, spare me the false denials. Have the guts to be honest.

It was his father's rifle so I guess he just took what he could get.

Alicewinn · 14/07/2024 23:40

the whole incident was unfortunate in that it will make the awful narcissist more popular with other adult children

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 18:44

incidentally, it was a supporter that shot him, according to the BBC - a republican

He registered as a republican in 2021 and voted in the 2022 mid terms as a registered republican. Doesn't mean that he supports Trump or even voted republican in 2022 when he was 18. Or if he did vote republican and then change his mind in the next 2 years. A registration on its own is pretty meaningless - we need more info to understand who he did support.
Plenty of democrats registered republican to vote for Nikki Haley in the recent primaries for eg.

David Dimbleby did a wonderful series of programmes on R4 just before Brexit. He spoke to people in poorer parts of the UK. He raised the issue of EU infrastructure: roads, bridges, leisure centres etc.
The general feeling was that the transport links tended to reduce the local jobs as bigger firms could undercut local businesses, while houses became more attractive as second-homes if folks from richer parts of the country could get there quicker.
A very articulate business owner from Merthyr Tydfil described a new leisure centre that locals couldn't afford to use being provided, while she couldn't access help to employ people in new jobs because of State Aid regulations that are routinely flouted in major EU states.

The Rule thing is nonsense. I seriously doubt an EU funded leisure centre being too expensive, too. I can see the point about roads, but that’s not the EU’s fault is it? Our government should have stopped that happening.

You are Queen of the eyeball eaters.

Not only are you unable to give any credit in any situation to someone you hate, but you tell yourself it’s impossible for anyone else to do so.

Remarkable level of inadequacy of character.

He was too thick to process what was happening. As usual. How anyone can have an iota of admiration for him I do not know.

This

timenowplease · 14/07/2024 23:47

In contrast to George Bush Jnr's reaction when told about the 9/11 attacks taking place. He sat for 10 minutes staring into space shitting himself before he slunk away.

MoonlightFarrow · 14/07/2024 23:48

I have no time for Trump or his politics but I do have a grudging respect for his reaction, which will get him tons of votes. His opponent is a doddery old man and there’s Trump, millimetres from death, defiant, and strong. You can see how that appeals.

I think the same was true about Reagan when he got shot. His first words to his wife were “Honey, I forgot to duck” and he joked with the surgeons that he hoped they were all Republicans. People like that kind of cool under fire stuff from their leaders.

Catpuss66 · 14/07/2024 23:50

He stopped those SS agents from leaving putting them in danger, doing all that fisting pumping whilst one person was dying & 2 others critically injured, he had no thought for anyone else other than himself to make himself look big.

youve987456 · 14/07/2024 23:52

Yeah but did someone really try and murder him or was it all a perfectly planned out incident to make him look good?

Remaker · 14/07/2024 23:53

Trained secret service agents were surrounding him as a human shield. Instead of listening to them and getting off the stage as quickly as possible he said wait wait, made them stay there in the firing line longer than necessary and popped his face up in clear view so he could have his photo moment. Sums him up really, stupid and selfish.

Also his press release saying ‘much bleeding took place’. A bit of an embarrassing overstatement- I doubt he needed a blood transfusion.

There were many civilians behind Trump (I hope they change that). So many more could have been killed with his wild shots. I think he hoped to kill Trump and then suicide by cop. Or at least be like Hinckley and become infamous.

Not sure if he would have aimed at civilians or not. Luckily, he was dispatched before that question was answered. .

I hope the others shot are recovering okay, and my heart breaks for the family of the hero who was killed.

Really? REALLY? I will assume either you are being sarcastic or are just incredibly, INCREDIBLY messed up in the head.

billyt · 14/07/2024 23:58

Anyone could be brave while wrapped up in five or six security men.

And this 'brave' Trump? The same one who managed to dodge the draft five times due to 'heel spurs'? Not my idea of a brave person.

clottedcremer · 14/07/2024 18:18

Agree OP. Very brave man.

Giant narcissist. But he'll 100pc be elected now and the world has never been in greater danger.

DodoTired · 15/07/2024 00:09

Yes he reacted very well and it will massively help him

as much as I wanted him to crawl away in terror pissing his pants instead, that would align a lot more with my perception of him

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/07/2024 00:16

My thought was, "He's gonna market the shit outta this..." 🤦‍♀️

RogueFemale · 15/07/2024 00:44

@Ladyslip I honestly thought a man whose lived such a life of luxury and privilege would have become a cowering wreck when faced with such a terrifying momemt. But he didn’t. He absolutely kept in (his) character and played it. I’ve seen successful and confident people completely lose their composure and be lost and bewildered in much less stressful but unexpected events. He didn’t do that. Credit where it’s due.

His reaction was instinctive. It's not a sign of bravery. No credit is due.

People react unpredictably in a crisis/shock situation. Some people freeze, some react. It's not possible to control how you react except perhaps with intense training / routine experience of extreme situations e.g. a fireman. Read 'Deep Survival' by Laurence Gonzales, who describes the phenomenon.

It's why airlines repeat emergency procedure again and again. In an attempt for it to sink in sufficiently to spark a reaction - and not freezing - in an emergency situation.

Trump didn't freeze, but the air-punch was a sort of knee-jerk reaction, because that's all he knows - he's forever punching the air. He'll do it when he's in a wheelchair with dementia.

I also think that he actually looked pathetic and lost, in spite of the air-punch.

AnotherDayOfSun · 15/07/2024 01:31

He does give off a vibe of someone who has no fear. I know a few people here in the U.S. who are Trump supporters and are "tough guy" types who nevertheless are riddled with fear and insecurity. I think that's part of his appeal for them. Of course, others support him for policy reasons, which I can certainly respect.

Inlaw · 15/07/2024 02:24

YANBU.

Unfortunately he now looks like a quasi messiah who has risen triumphantly from an act of god to save him.

Trump would be an incel if he had no money.

WindsorCat · 15/07/2024 06:42

Obama would have styled it out with grace and decorum. Not attempting to incite further violence by telling his fans to "fight"

💯

dottiehens · 15/07/2024 07:39

Totally! He is brave. I would be horrified to carry on after that.
