Is it just me who feels that this use of the name Karen to imply unreasonable/stroppy/mean/spiteful behaviour has become Bullying?
And yes I am called Karen🤗 but whenever I see the name, along with Kevin, Sharon or Nigel used to describe ‘bad’ or ‘typical’ behaviour I feel rather sad.
I don’t think I’m generally difficult, to be honest I’m too lazy🤣🤣 & a big fan of live & let live. So the frequent references to ‘ Karen’ being nasty/mean/horrible are hard to hear & each time I do that sadness grows & I step that little bit further away to protect me.
so

AIBU it’s just a joke get over it
YANBU it is hard to constantly hear that your name means you’re mean

Somewhat lighthearted but writing this out makes me realise it really does hurt.

I have never come across Kevin being used that way. I see Karen in the media every sodding day

Usually it's graham, brad or Tyrone

Are you really telling someone who experiences racism how to call out racism

oh my you couldn’t make this up …

Thank you. Beggars belief doesn’t it. The feelings of the victim of racism matter not.

wtfissummer · 14/07/2024 15:30

@jamaftercream Where have I said the feelings of victims of racism don't matter?

If you use the term Karen then you're rightly judged and called out as it's a misogynistic and ageist slur.

How is that saying your feelings don't matter?

Topoftheflops · 14/07/2024 15:44

It's a lovely name and yes YANBU.
It needs to stop. I overheard a neighbour's child say "and she has a Karen haircut" I winced.

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 15:51

But it’s not just a misogynistic term but it might be for you

but to many people it’s a word that has been used to call out particular type of underhand racist behaviour

who is to decide what terms can be used to call out racism no one but the person who is on the receiving end

Opinionwontchangeluv · 14/07/2024 15:18

Yeah. Go to Twitter, search for 'kevin'. Zero examples of it being used as an insult. Then search for Karen. You'll see your difference.

Tagyoureit · 14/07/2024 15:54

I agree Karen shouldn't be used as an insult when the word twat will suffice

the person who is on the receiving end

Problem is that people called Karen are now 'on the receiving end' of mockery and insults to the point that some are changing their names.

And women in general are 'on the receiving end' of what's become a generalised sexist put down.

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 14/07/2024 15:57

Hedgeoffressian · 13/07/2024 23:26

I’ve seen the term used by plenty of men on Facebook and it’s always been directed towards older white women.

Besides the fact that women can be misogynistic too.

One of the top examples on Twitter right now.

This 'Karen of all Karens' isn't racist, and it looks like she isn't white either.

The person calling her a Karen is male.

parkrun500club · 14/07/2024 16:09

It's been time to stop using Karen as an insult since it was first used as an insult.

It's ageist and sexist, and really horrible if your name happens to be Karen (mine isn't, but I am from that era, so it could have easily been my name that was chosen).

I know someone who's called Karen but she pronounces it car-wren to try to get away from the lazy insult.

I disagree. If someone is racist, call them a racist. You don't achieve anything by using a name that is common to a particular sex and age group. It also suggests that only women over 45 are racist, which is patently ridiculous.

Also, it isn't used in that sense in the UK - it is used in an attempt to stop women over 45 having an opinion.

Oh dear. You really don't get it.

NotThroughChoice · 14/07/2024 16:15

I lose respect for anyone using that term.

Funnywonder · 14/07/2024 16:21

I agree with pp upthread who mentioned how many women seem to use it. I see it used quite frequently by women on our community Facebook page. I always used to say something, whether the insult came from a man or a woman, and I had a fair bit of support. But it's like pissing in the wind and I just can't be bothered anymore. Some people are just arseholes.

Petrine · 14/07/2024 16:31

jamaftercream · 14/07/2024 02:09

It’a not about you, it’s about me experiencing racist abuse and calling the racist Karen or Ken to answer back.

Why is your upset more important than mine, who has actually experienced the abuse from the racist?

So why not just call the person a racist?

marmitegirl01 · 14/07/2024 16:32

Yup hate it. Try to call it out when it's used but often ends with people being vile so pick my moments!

cupcaske123 · 14/07/2024 16:32

Petrine · 14/07/2024 16:31

So why not just call the person a racist?

I think it's because a Karen was initially a white, middle aged, woman.

Previousreligion · 14/07/2024 16:39

I don't think it's a joke or funny at all. I never ever use it. I really like the name Karen, although it's not my own. I know a few lovely Karens and when I hear the name I think of them.

Glitterbiscuits · 14/07/2024 16:49

Can anyone give me a snappy retort I can use if I see someone use it?

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 14/07/2024 16:55

Hedgeoffressian · 13/07/2024 23:26

Yeah you see it a lot on Reddit as well. They take it quite seriously - just having the Karen haircut is sus.

Woman + not young + not keeping her mouth shut = insane victimiser 😱

what call our behaviour and attitude

oh yes that really works

Why do you think someone that is using Karen to name a type of behaviour they are trying to achieve something maybe they are just telling them I see you I know what you are about

surreygirl1987 · 14/07/2024 17:20

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 00:28

I’m very opinionated

im middle aged

yet to be called a Karen I am not sure it is aimed at any women with an opinion

It definitely is. I will speak up and raise my opinion. I have been called a Karen loads of times to try to shut me up.
