Is it just me who feels that this use of the name Karen to imply unreasonable/stroppy/mean/spiteful behaviour has become Bullying?
And yes I am called Karen🤗 but whenever I see the name, along with Kevin, Sharon or Nigel used to describe ‘bad’ or ‘typical’ behaviour I feel rather sad.
I don’t think I’m generally difficult, to be honest I’m too lazy🤣🤣 & a big fan of live & let live. So the frequent references to ‘ Karen’ being nasty/mean/horrible are hard to hear & each time I do that sadness grows & I step that little bit further away to protect me.
so

AIBU it’s just a joke get over it
YANBU it is hard to constantly hear that your name means you’re mean

Somewhat lighthearted but writing this out makes me realise it really does hurt.

It's sexist, ageist and has racial undertones. I'm not a fan.

It's not racist.

Yes OP I agree. I call it out as misogyny whenever I come across it.

I also love Outnumbered so will always be a Karen fan.

Karentoo · 14/07/2024 02:53

jamaftercream · 14/07/2024 02:09

It’a not about you, it’s about me experiencing racist abuse and calling the racist Karen or Ken to answer back.

Why is your upset more important than mine, who has actually experienced the abuse from the racist?

My upset is absolutely not more important than yours, but it is not a competition. None of that answers why you are using the name Karen.
It's appalling that you or anyone else is experiencing racism, but call the perpetrators what they are - racists, nasty fuckers, there's lots of retaliatory insults that woukd fit the bill. What does calling them Karen achieve?

LemonTreeGrove · 14/07/2024 03:18

downtownlights · 14/07/2024 02:52

Bc the insult Karen originated in the African American community to describe a certain type of entitled white suburban woman.

It has grown far beyond that as a means of belittling and silencing women and should be retired.

Exactly. The people pretending Karen is only used about racism know very well that's not the case. In fact the racism I see on Facebook tends to be by men and oddly they don't get called names.

wtfissummer · 14/07/2024 10:37

@jamaftercream So if you're experiencing racism then call the perpetrators racists.

Your use of "Karen" doesn't give you the moral high ground you think it does

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 11:00

Are you really telling someone who experiences racism how to call out racism

oh my you couldn’t make this up …

It isn't calling out racism.
I'm not sure what you think you are standing up for here. No one is saying racism is OK, of course it's abhorrent. But you don't call out racism by shitting on other people and experiencing racism doesn't give you the right to do that.
And stop with the snide you couldn't make this up type comments.

ChristmasFluff · 14/07/2024 11:15

Och, it's dying out anyway. It has already stopped being in the slightest bit funny, and shows up the person using it as an out-of-touch saddo, late to jump on the bandwagon. I give it 2 years and it'll be all over and there'll be a new insult to try to push women back in their box.

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 11:37

For you yourself it may not call out racism

but why is it for you to tell others how to call out a particular type of behaviour that is racist

It been a term used to call this behaviour out some may really dislike it but so what the point is is calling out a type of behaviour that many people have to deal with often

Scammersarescum · 14/07/2024 11:45

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 11:00

Jewish people in Israel are repeatedly being told how they should retaliate against a terrorist attack that killed hundreds.

Just because someone has experienced some sort of attack or oppression it does not mean that their retaliatory behaviour can be without scrutiny.

So no racism should not be 'called out' out by using a misogynistic slur.

seedsandseeds · 14/07/2024 11:55

American community to describe a certain type of entitled white suburban woman.

Yeah, that's not racism. White people hold the power. Next.

JennyBeanR · 14/07/2024 12:02

As long as big pop stars use it (looking at you Beyonce), I think unfortunately it will continue to be around.
It's horribly misogynistic and I'm horrified at the amount of women who join in and use it.

It's just a recent addition to all the misogynistic slurs to direct at women, there are so many of them. There's a lot of internalised misogyny oiling the wheels of the patriarchy.

cloudy477654 · 14/07/2024 12:27

Yes I hate it, as a woman in my 40s I hate that it's used to dismiss the opinions of older women

JustNeedSomeSupportRightNow · 14/07/2024 12:33

Yeah I hate it. Can’t imagine how shit I’d feel if people started using my name as an insult.
Not acceptable at all.

Arconialiving · 14/07/2024 12:37

ChoccieCornflake · 13/07/2024 23:09

It's a misogynistic insult used mostly to silence women. It's absolutely time that people got called out for using it

First response nails it as is often the case!

I expect the male equivalent which is “Kevin’ is absolutely fine and has nothing to do with “silencing men”.

Skinglow · 14/07/2024 12:46

I was pleased to see that MNHQ deleted 'Karen' on a thread yesterday. Everyone just needs to report any post that uses it. As well as calling it out on the thread.

I have never come across Kevin being used that way. I see Karen in the media every sodding day

I’ll maybe take your advice when white people stop watching and doing nothing when a racist attacks me.

I've never heard of Kevin being used against a man. Do you think that given the thousands of years of patriarchy, daily gender based violence and abuse women suffer for existing, never mind having an opinion, that being called Kevin holds equivalence?

Thatsthebottomline · 14/07/2024 13:38

Ah, so it’s OK to do it to men. Thanks for clearing that up

Couldn't make what up? How ridiculous

The pp uses "Karen" to call out racism

That doesn't give her a free pass to use an ageist and misogynistic slur.
