Is it gross to rewear clothes?

Sparksi · 13/07/2024 08:23

I have one pair of maternity leggings that fit. I had them on yesterday all day and want to wear them again today. I didn’t go anywhere in them other than a brief trip to the shop and was otherwise at home all day. Is it fine or bad hygiene to wear them again today?

YABU - gross, find something else
YANBU - things like that are definitely fine for a second day

When I was teaching I had three suits that I wore for two days each, my least favourite I wore on Friday. Wednesday morning I caught my foot in the hem of the trousers and changed into another one. In a large school, 1000+, the number of pupils, some who I'd never taught, who said Why are you wearing your Friday suit? was amazing, one even asked if we could have the next day of as he thought it was Saturday.

Brilliant 😆

YANBU. Unless you spilt something down them, they will be absolutely fine. My rule for clothes is, if something looks clean and smells clean, then it gets worn again. The only items that automatically go in the wash at the end of the day are pants and socks.

spikeandbuffy · 13/07/2024 17:45

I wear leggings twice
Only wear them for either WFH or sports ones for spin or netball
If I did a really sweaty workout I would wash them but they're usually fine for 2 netball matches

I once went with a friend to stay at his parents' second home. When we arrived the heating was on high, even though they hadn't been there for several weeks and it was April. I opened the dishwasher and they had clearly put it on before they left - there were about two bowels and a knife in there.

They have more money than they know what to do with, but it's no excuse for the utter wastefulness of resources.

Edited

Two bowls, not two bowels. 😄

People wash their clothes are too much imo. I always rewear unless I've been particularly sweaty or the clothes have got dirty. You'll be fine!

But surely showering twice a day (instead of just once in the morning and freshening up as necessary) and buying pantie liners is just as bad as washing my clothes?
One way or another if I want to be clean it will use water and cleaning products.
I wonder how many times a year the people criticising my washing habits fly for example (I can count on one hand the number of times I have been on a plane in my life). The fact we are human at all is ruining the planet and we probably all contribute in our own way, unless we go back to living in mud huts and washing irregularly in the river I can't see how washing less and recycling Amazon packaging etc will make a difference - oh that and shutting down the huge factories in China and elsewhere, now that might actually make some difference.

I think you will find that a 3 minute shower uses far less water than even the shortest cycle on a washing machine.
I don't use detergent that's come packaged in plastic containers. A bar of soap is fine.

I don't wear leggings. If your leggings are disappearing where the sun doesn't shine because they are so tight and a bit like a thong, or they're also acting like knickers, and you wear a thong, you may have a point. Otherwise , no.

I holiday in the UK, so no flying :)

Choochoo21 · 13/07/2024 18:59

Most clothes can be reworn at least 2 or 3 times.

If you’re changing your underwear and didn’t spill anything on them, then I’m not sure how you think they’re dirty.

@TheChosenTwo Strides, then there’s a word you don’t hear very often. Not sure when I last heard it being used.

Dh always calls them strides, I’m not sure I ever heard anyone refer to them as that before I met him!

Of course it’s fine! I wear trousers at least two days usually more.

Me too

You do realise that when we've showered we are actually clean.

Yes of course, I’m familiar with the concept of coming out of a shower clean and using a towel to dry off. As I said, I think it’s disgusting sharing a towel and rarely washing it.

SmudgeButt · 14/07/2024 17:55

Lots of research has been done about how often we actually need to wash our clothes with the consensus being that we wash them too often. Normally just airing things out between wearings is enough to keep them fresh.

So for me things closest to my skin get washed more frequently than things further away. So knickers and bras every day or two, t shirts might be 3 days. Jeans get washed maybe once a month but will go for days between wearing. Obviously if I splash muck down them they go into the wash. Proper trousers get worn once every 3 months so might be washed once in 18 months.

I had for some while a number of heavy cotton tshirt/jumpers that I would wear to work. Always had a system of wearing one and then leaving it to air at the end of the wardrobe to be worn maybe a few days later and then it could go in the wash. Never a problem with smell. Casual tshirts used for doing stuff around the house are more likely to get mucky but still are good for 2 - 3 days.

You may be clean but a lot of people have skin conditions like athletes foot or toenail fungus which are highly contagious. Medical advice is not to share towels for this reason or even bath mats if we're being fussy.

I've found since ditching spray deodorant/anti perspirant and changing to Wild that i am much less sweaty and a top/tshirt can do 2 or 3 days:) Before I used to wash tops after each wear.

GalileoHumpkins · 14/07/2024 18:38

Everyone saying their leggings smell, what of? Why are you so smelly?

This. I stopped using antiperspirants over 15 years ago because the more I used them the less they worked.

I use different things now - Old Spice sticks (the non-antiperspirant ones), green Biotherm or alum crystal sitcks. I sweat much much less without antiperspirants.

Bertsmum22 · 14/07/2024 20:53

Sniff test! I always wear clothes more than once! Would be so wasteful otherwise.

bookishblondie · 14/07/2024 20:55

I'm a stay at home mum of two kids aged 3 and 18 months. All I do is rewear clothes.

I was the same..the stronger I used the worse it was...I changed to Wild.and have gone from being a sweaty Betty to being able to wear the same.shirt for 2 or 3 days. I never thought it would work!! Introduced my aunt to it too as she also sweated.a lot..she's the same. Amazing :)

FindingNeverland28 · 14/07/2024 21:07

I also have 1 pair of maternity leggings. I was hoping that I’d be in my dresses, but the weather has other plans. I wear mine a few days on the trot. I refuse to buy anymore now when I’m due in 7 weeks.

dotdotdotdash · 14/07/2024 21:09

I haven’t read the whole thread but I would add that natural fibres are much less pings than synthetic. I wear merino tops for running and they need infrequent washing (just airing) and do not smell. Buy better, buy less, choose natural fibres and think of the environment!

dotdotdotdash · 14/07/2024 21:09

Pongy not pings!

Mine are dirty because I work with animals - they get covered in mud, sweat, dog fur, dribble, hay and all kinds of things. And yes, they smell as a result.

So they go in the wash basket as soon as I get in the door from work. I then put a clean pair on after my shower, which get re-worn at work the next day, which go in the wash (and repeat ad infinitum).

If I was just sat at home on a computer all day that would be different, but I'm not.

mitogoshi · 14/07/2024 21:36

I wouldn't but I don't like rewearing trousers

phoenixrosehere · 14/07/2024 21:42

I spent most of my pregnancy in leggings and dresses. I wasn’t buying anything new or particularly worried when the moment I got home, I took them off to go to sleep because I had bad insomnia and constantly hot. I was sleeping with two fans on for my entire pregnancy.

As long as they didn’t smell, they went on. The moment they did, they went into the wash basket. I had a rotation of three different pairs of leggings.

Day old fanny.

I agree with the poster saying they can’t rewear leggings, I can’t either after a full days wear 7am-10pm roughly, yes Ive showered in the morning, yes I wear big pants … even with a pant liner they’d stink in the crotch area.
