Is it gross to rewear clothes?

Sparksi · 13/07/2024 08:23

I have one pair of maternity leggings that fit. I had them on yesterday all day and want to wear them again today. I didn’t go anywhere in them other than a brief trip to the shop and was otherwise at home all day. Is it fine or bad hygiene to wear them again today?

YABU - gross, find something else
YANBU - things like that are definitely fine for a second day

I think it's fine to rewear clothes. I came in from the stables yesterday, took off my smelly outer clothes and I have just put them back on this morning to go and muck out my horses. Will shower and change when I get back in. They get washed when they need it. Much better for the planet.

Useruserdoubleuser · 13/07/2024 08:59

@Jadedbuthappy82 well said.
Work expands to fit the time available and all that. Quite apart from the environmental cost why on earth are so many people so small minded they can’t cope with fabric which isn’t ‘sterile’. Just because we have machines and dryers now we won’t all get sick if we don’t constantly wash every item every time it’s used.
Last time this was a topic it brought out all the people who wash their towels after every use though.

Devilsmommy · 13/07/2024 09:01

@Jadedbuthappy82 I'd definitely not look at the laundry sorting thread. People doing 5-6 different washes for stuff that really could be done in 2. Apart from the climate change thing I don't understand how people can get that bothered about laundry🤷

dancingqueen345 · 13/07/2024 09:02

😳 puts maternity leggings on for a 4th day in shame 😳

But in all seriousness, dressing when pregnant is hard enough, if it's clean and comfy it's getting reworn!

SharonEllis · 13/07/2024 09:03

Its incrediblyvwasteful to wash clothes after each wear and the clothes will wear out quicker. It depends on lot on the sweatiness of the individual how many wears is appropriate. I wear a pair of sturd trousers for weeks (not every day) Linen ones that lose shape I would wear for a day or two then a quick handwash - not a full machine wash. I used to wash tops after each wear but since I switched to a natural deodorant that neutralises smells, even if I sweat a bit I can wear for 2 days. I use Fit Pit by the green woman its magic.

Bananalanacake · 13/07/2024 09:08

I always wear everything 3 times apart from undies and socks. My kids clothes, I sponge off any stains and they wear them again. Towels last over a week.

@elastamum

would you have worn them on the school run, to meet a friend?

it's one thing to wear them mucking out horses, quite another to wear elsewhere.

@Sparksi as long as they pass the look clean & pass the sniff test (some women have more crotchy odour than other & also vary themselves).

I mostly find leggings are a one day item, but say jeans that don't fit so closely are usually good for a couple/few wears. Maternity leggings could go either way. If they small ok, you're good to go.maybe get some cheaper things to wear at home to make your maternity leggings last better IF money is the issue.

Dancingqueen2023 · 13/07/2024 09:14

If they look and smell clean go for it. I hang up anything that looks and smells clean at the end of the day to air out.

PowerTulle · 13/07/2024 09:14

i would go as far as to say, keep wearing them until they don’t pass the sniff test.
You’re pregnant and probably tired, don’t create more work than you need to!

RampantIvy · 13/07/2024 09:18

I find leggings do get smelly after one wear as they sit right next to your underwear and the material is so thin

Mine don't. I have just put on the same leggings that I wore yesterday evening to sit and watch TV in.

ricecrispiecakes · 13/07/2024 09:19

I re-wear plenty of clothes by the way - jumpers and jeans, plus work clothes and outer layers, but my leggings and t-shirts always smell after a full day of wear 🤷‍♀️

Sethera · 13/07/2024 09:19

Other than underwear, I usually wear clothes two or three times unless I spill something on them or they get otherwise visibly dirty. Obviously on the rare occasions the weather is hot enough for me to sweat I won't re-wear sweated-on things.

We're all different though aren't we?

If mine didn't smell I'd re-wear but they do, so in the wash they go.

IDontHateRainbows · 13/07/2024 09:22

Depends how close they are to your skin.

In the olden days people rewore skirts, tops etc all the time and had petticoats/ slips etc underneath.

They probably rewore those a few times too

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/07/2024 09:23

If it smells ok and I haven't dribbled good on it I often rewear clothes.

Blondiebeachbabe · 13/07/2024 09:32

I'd wear 3 or 4 days!

Obeseandashamed · 13/07/2024 09:58

This thread is great... I never knew rewearing clothes was a thing & now I can enjoy having less laundry. I've always put things in the wash even if only worn for a few hours yet I despise the amount of laundry/ironing/putting away I do.

I assume this is tongue in cheek? Grin

I really do despair for the future of humanity. Some people are in for a real shock when the reality finally hits of what it's going to take to save our precious planet. The level of total ignorance from seemingly intelligence people blows my mind.

If we are all washing clothes at this rate of unnecessary ridiculousness, what hope is there that we can globally reduce the amount of strain on our water systems, let alone anything else.

Imagine how people will react when the emergency measures kick in when the eventual mass panic hits those in charge and the majority of the general public. Of course we can't sustain our world by producing such an enormous amount of pollution daily in its various forms. Every single (domestic or industrial) load of washing produces goodness knows how many litres of grey (polluted with chemicals) water that is then released into the system and needs to be treated.

We are all (surely by now!?) aware of the horrendous state of the UKs waterways and sewage systems, this kind of ridiculous over-washing of clean clothes simply adds to an already broken system, bursting at the seams.

Can you imagine how people will react when we are finally given a list of measures to abide by to be even within a small vain hope of undoing all this environmental damage?

I mean I just cannot get my head around the sheer lack of commonsense and collective responsibility to be sensible here. How do people think that water from their washing machines gets back to clean again? By magic? Fairy dust? David Attenborough himself with his mangle?

For goodness sake please, all those people who fear wearing anything more than once - put your idiotic selfishness to one side, read some climate change books and get therapy.

OP, your leggings are fine lass, please wear them again x

Brilliant post, totally agree

timoteigirl · 13/07/2024 10:03

I first thought this was a troll. So many hard decisions in life to come if you can't decide this on your own.

usernother · 13/07/2024 10:07

Of course it's not gross. And even if it was why would you care? What do think would happen, people would point and laugh at you in the street?

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/07/2024 10:12

I've got the jumpsuit and sweater I had on yesterday they're not dirty and then clean undies obvs!

Gall10 · 13/07/2024 10:15

Washing after one wear increases electricity use, water consumption, detergents going into water courses, wear & tear of clothing (just watched Simon reeves on tv last night saying it takes 2000 liters of water to make the cotton for one tee shirt…shocking)
After your baby is born you’ll probably be wearing those legging a dozen times before washing them!
Hope your pregnancy goes well.

CortieTat · 13/07/2024 10:15

Not gross at all. If they don’t smell and are not dirty, why not? Excessive washing is really bad for the environment, especially if it’s artificial fibres that release tons of microplastics when washed.

Argh, I hit "yabu" by accident and couldn't change it. You do what you need to do to be comfortable. This is a brief time in your life.

You can change your choice by clicking on the other choice, it swaps your choice over. Unless voting has closed of course!
