Getting annoyed with family about Football (Especially with the Euros being on)

sweetLovelyPassionfruit · 12/07/2024 21:48

I need to know if I'm unreasonable. My family is obsessed with football. Every single conversation somehow turns into a discussion about games, players, or scores (YAWN). With the Euros happening right now, it's like football has completely taken over our lives. It feels like I’m living in a constant sports broadcast what I can’t escape.

Trying to Be Supportive
At first, I tried to be supportive. I watched the games, asked questions, and at leats be a little exited, but it's just not for me. I don’t like it at all, and honestly, it's drives me up the wall. It feels like there’s no room for anything else in our lives anymore.

Reaching a Breaking Point :(

I’ve hinted and even directly asked if we could talk about something else sometimes, but nothing changes. The other week, we had a big family gathering, and the whole time was spent talking about the Euros (great escape that whoopty doo). Even talking about buying shirts, the blooming price of them!!! After hours of this, I finally snapped.

The Aftermath
Everyone went quiet and stared at me like I had just cursed at them. They said I was being dramatic and ruining their fun. They told me that football is something they all enjoy, and I should just deal with it or join in. But I can’t. It's making me feel like I don’t even exist in my own family unless I’m talking about football.

Feeling Guilty :((

Now, everything is slightyly unfun. I feel bad for snapping, but I’m also really frustrated that my simple request to talk about something else was seen as a huge deal. I just want to feel included without having to pretend to care about football all the time.

The Euros are over soon!

Hobbesmanc · 12/07/2024 21:50

Gosh. It's all over on Sunday. Just grit your teeth and join in.

MiriamMay · 12/07/2024 21:51

It just a couple of weeks.

you can’t control what other adults talk about.

sweetLovelyPassionfruit · 12/07/2024 21:53

Its the most annoying thing listening about football all the time though! Also 'grit your teeth' implies I am being reasonable but should just be quiet about it no?

Thank God, hopefully we'll win it so it isnt such a big deal next time!!

Go out with friends who don't give a shit about football!

TheaBrandt · 12/07/2024 21:55

Loving your layout and paragraph titling! Does sound annoying

NoDishiRishi · 12/07/2024 21:56

It'll be just a big deal next time 😂

Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” Bill Shankly.

Do they stop when a big tournament like this is over? It would drive me nuts too but I'd be more tolerant if only during big events .

Haveyougotallnight · 12/07/2024 21:56

Yes also love your layout and taking us through the scene!

sweetLovelyPassionfruit · 12/07/2024 21:57

Me and structure are best friends. I'm sure this incredibly boring attribute isnt playing into the football thing at all.

OP posts:
SkaneTos · 12/07/2024 21:57

I'm sure there will be less talk about football once the Euros are over.
Try to be patient.
Think about your own interests and what makes you happy!
Many people don't care about football, you are not alone.

lemonmeringueno3 · 12/07/2024 21:57

I don't think you can tell adults what they can and can't talk about really. If the majority want to talk about it, they will. You just need to find a topic that they are equally interested in and hold their interest. I don't think snapping ever really works out - you say 'talk about something else ffs' and they say 'what do you want to talk about then?' and things get really awkward.

No it doesn't imply you are being reasonable it means you are being unreasonable. Why should the rest of your family not be able to enjoy it and bond with each other over it just because you don't like it. Join in or don't join it but don't piss on other people's chips. It will be over by Monday and life will go back to normal.

I feel it kindve implies that its a reasonable feeling but I should just bottle it up no?

No if we win there will be massive expectations for the World Cup in 2 years time. Buckle up OP!

Hankunamatata · 12/07/2024 22:00

I just get my phone out or a book when it starts going on and on

Louisaaa · 12/07/2024 22:00

I can't stand football, thankfully my family don't care about it but my boyfriend is obsessed. He's really supportive and doesn't talk about it when we're together. Although I'll still watch it with him as it's important to him.

It's only fair as I love love island and he hates it but watches it with me.

FuzzyStripes · 12/07/2024 22:01

So everyone else loves football and wants to talk about it all the time but you don’t so you want to dictate things. I think YABU.

You believe you are reasonable because you don't like football. People who do like football will think you are unreasonable to expect them not to enjoy the tournament and the bonding experience of chatting about it and it would indeed be unreasonable of you to tell them not to!

sweetLovelyPassionfruit · 12/07/2024 22:03

I guess its to do with society's expectations of 'put on a brave face and look like youre having fun' vs 'maybe look a bit miserable but be authentic'

My home is officially a 'sports free zone'. No football or tennis has been watched here. Utter bliss!Smile

Wideskye · 12/07/2024 22:12

Sorry, if they win they will go on about it for the next 60 years.
If they lose they will disect every kick and blame someone.

A friend has booked a campervan and has gone away with her dog for a few days. Leaving DH and 2 sons at home.

I think it is awful that it is the main new story on all UK channels.

Saying that we are all rugby fans.
