How do you separate laundry?

So.. need some honest opinions here. I posted a comment on a previous thread mentioning that washing tea towels together with knickers is gross IMO. Received quite a few comments telling me I'm uptight and bizarre. I honestly think that even if you wash them at 90 degrees, you still shouldn't mix tea towels and underwear. Am I in minority then thinking this? Genuinely curious.

Whites
Reds
Greens
Blues
Greys
Blacks
Delicates

Most washed at 30C or 20C

I am a sucker for a gimmick and use a variety of different water softener tablets, detergents, stain removers and disinfectants in every wash

Edited

I use colour catchers but I've been tempted by the colour catcher cloth that you can reuse.

I also got a really good duster glove.

Mystro202 · 14/07/2024 14:16

Get a life you absolute tool bag 🤣 my tea towels are only used for drying the dishes coming out of a dishwasher. And I Hand-wash at a hot temp. I don't see the need to swirl them around with bodily fluids before cleaning them. It just doesn't make sense.

And you may not know but there are amazing things called RUBBER GLOVES for your delicate hands if you need them.

You've gone from insisting 60 degrees isn't hot enough to kill bacteria to insisting hand washing is?! There's absolutely no way your putting your hands in water hot enough to kill bacteria.

It's bizarre that you think underwear isn't getting clean from a 60 degree wash and that faecal matter and urine stays in the machine and spreads over everything else that gets washed but it's OK tk wear clothes covered in this, that you touch daily with your hands, where you hold cups, maybe bite your nails or out your finger in your mouth but got forbid a tea towel goes through a hotwash with a pair of pants.

I think you must have have put your head in boiling water and addled your brain.

Mystro202 · 14/07/2024 14:32

What bacteria are going to be on tea towels that are only drying what comes out of a dishwasher? The only reason they would need to be washed at 60 is if they are being washed with dirty laundry. As I say this can be avoided by washing them seperately. Stop taking offence and keep doing what you wanna do. I'm not trying to convince you otherwise at all. OP I think we've definitely hit a few nerves here 😂

AwfullyWeeBillyBigchin · 14/07/2024 14:44

Light stuff and dark stuff separately, at 30° (typically), light and dark towels separately, at a higher temp, and bed linen separately, just because of load size.

I really don't know why you think everyone is offended?

You and the OP are the ones who said bacteria gets killed at 60 degrees but you can't wash pants and tea towels together because then the bacteria doesn't get killed.

Now you've just said they can all be washed together at 60 after insisting to everyone that they absolutely can't.

Make your mind up.

Well I actually wash my tea towels by hand so no sorting needed for me 😆 I'm not getting annoyed at all, it's none of my business what you do. I'm just frustrated at being asked the same question over and over when it has been answered numerous time. You keep doing you and I'll do me.

If a 60° wash won't kill bacteria how will washing by hand?

How hot is the water? Are your hands heat-proof? And did you not say you washed them in the machine? Apologies if I'm mixing you up with someone else.

Your laundry tales are starting to unravel.

Read her last post. After insisting all through that tea towels and pants can't be washed together on a 60, she is now saying they can be washed together at 60 but tea towels would only need a 40 if washed separately or handwashed like hers (though she says she handwashes at temps hot enough to kill bacteria, despite now saying bacteria doesn't exist on her tea towels)

Earbuddy · 14/07/2024 14:49

Moonlightdancing · 12/07/2024 21:17

Washing at 40 degrees or less doesn't kill any bacteria. Mixing tea towels most people use on dishes with underwear and washing them together it's just gross IMO. You have people moaning that's it's all clean anyway , but the same people will say you shouldn't wash your meats for fear of spreading bacteria. Make it make sense.

Washing in plain water won’t kill bacteria but the detergent will. It won’t sterilise the clothes, neither will a 60 degree wash- but the clothes will be clean and extremely unlikely to be of any danger to your health.

britneyisfree · 14/07/2024 14:52

I never thought about this before and would have claimed I was a chuck it all in person.

I would never wash tea towels with under wear or other clothes. I'm not sure why. I'd also never mix tea towels with towels.

So I did - everything all in clothes wise
(I wear period pants and those are washed alone without anyone else's stuff.)

Towels on their own

Tea towels on their own - I have a lot to make them up to be a full load

My LO starts school this year so I'll have to start washing whites separately too.

Bignanna · 14/07/2024 14:53

GinAndBeerIt · 14/07/2024 11:17

Bedding goes in alone on a 60 wash.
Tea towels go in with bath/hand towels and face flannels at 60.
Whites go in alone at 60.
Coloureds go in at 40.

Tea towels shouldn’t be put in with towels( or underwear) Why would you mix cloths you dry your crockery and cutlery on with towels you use to dry your nether regions ? Some on here are clearly having a hard time seeing why you shouldn’t!

Mystro202 · 14/07/2024 14:54

Look in my eyes it's disgusting to wash underwear with tea towels and that's that. You can all do what you like , I won't be convinced otherwise.
You're basically contaminating them with shite and then cleaning them at 60 to de-contaminate them when you could have avoided all that by cleaning them separately. Enjoy your laundry everyone 🤗

Sparrowball · 14/07/2024 14:56

Do the poo on tea towel fanatics understand how bacteria grow and multiply?

Do they know we are covered with bacteria as is everything we touch? Clean and sanitary does not mean sterile, and it would be impossible to have a sterile home and clothes.

I've never heard of such nonsense about tea towels, iron them with a hot iron if you're that paranoid and bored.

I wash mine at 30, still alive. Struggling to see how the hell im still alive if shit is on every item I own and has been for about 45 years.

You're doing it again!!!

I wash pants/socks/tea towels together at 60 degrees. Why do tea towels need a second 60 degree wash?

You've literally said in two seperate posts, minutes apart, they can all go in at 60 then they can't go in at 60 and tea towels need two 60 degree washes.

So maybe you could explain the following been as two other posters can't.

Why can towels washed at 60 and tea towels at 60 not be washed together?

The clue is in the name - washing machine. It washes and then rinses the items that are put in it so they come out all nice and clean.

Sparrowball · 14/07/2024 15:06

So tea towels can't be washed with your knickers, they can't be washed with other towels either. 🤣🤣🤣

What are the rules about socks and slippers?

If you want your gusset residue floating around your tea towels, carry on !
yes the washing machine does clean, but I don’t want tea towels in the same water as underwear, as they wouldn’t be clean enough for me. I mostly wash at 30/40, tea towels usually at 60. Only boiling would kill bacteria efficiently and most fabrics can’t be washed at that temperature, plus many washing machines don’t go above 90! Those that disagree- carryon with your faecal swirling!

Mystro202 · 14/07/2024 15:19

Elephant pants what is your problem, you're like a dog with a bone!! Nobody is trying to argue with you, if you want to defend your washing actions do all you like but I don't need to explain my reasons for diagreeing with you.

S0livagant · 14/07/2024 16:13

If I waited until I had enough knickers to do a full wash of knickers I’d have none left to wear

I imagine almost everyone would be in that situation. Even if you wore boxers it would take weeks.

Are you running the machine on an empty cycle with an antibacterial after washing your knickers and before teatowels? Otherwise surely poo residue would remain? Or two separate machines?
