To wonder what is wrong with people who don't really drink

No - not alcohol

Just liquid

People who can sit down to a meal without so much as a glass of water

People who invite guests to stay but have nothing to offer them to drink oh and you'd have to boil the tapwater haha

I can't sleep from thinking about this

OP you are the poster who posted very upset about the horrors of the menopause. I think you sound like you are going through a tough time right now and everything feels like an insurmountable challenge.

Just go and buy the water you need every day. This one is a solvable problem.

Puffinfoot · 12/07/2024 08:19

My Dad heard something on the radio years ago explaining why it's best not to drink with a meal and never does. I've no idea if there's anything in it.

I don't have much in to offer guests becuase I don't like sugar drinks, so tea or tap water or wine is on offer. Where are you that tap water needs to be boiled?

Southlondoner88 · 12/07/2024 08:20

kiterunning · 12/07/2024 08:09

We have all been conned by the bottled water industry

The OP is talking about tap water, she wants just normal tap water but it’s not available. I drink a lot of water, rarely drink fizzy drinks or coffee so that is my go to drink. I haven always been this way, even as a child and way before bottled water was a big thing. I never drink bottled water, you can taste the plastic usually, yuck.

Also, I work with a lot of dieticians who tell me how important is is it to drink lots of water, they never give non evidence based advice.

The reason I can't sleep is that I'm currently a guest at a no beverages household.

I saw this coming and managed to sneak one can on diet coke into my handbag on the way here but I need to make it count. Unsure when best to drink it to minimise risk of death by dehydration.

My head hurts so much. I'd have had a big iced water by now.

That’s just silly, why not ask for a glass of water.
If that’s too scary why not bring a plastic cup with you and get a drink from the cold water tap when you go to the bathroom. It’s the same water supply as the kitchen tap.

I can't bring a week's worth of drinks can I, that would look insane.

I assumed the tapwater would be drinkable.

I don't think I could stay somewhere where there was no safe drinking water.
I think it would be entirely reasonable to leave under those circumstances.

What do the hosts drink?

I don't want a bloody grim boiled glass of water I want NICE WATER.

Can't even sneak out to buy some as miles from the nearest shop.

This is hell.

Well you know not to go there again.
Go and live in Atlantis. Lots of water

Begsthequestion · 12/07/2024 07:23

I read it's best not to drink too much with food, as it can dilute the stomach acid needed for digestion.

A glass of water is ok if you're already dehydrated but not necessary.

Tea is not advised with food at all, as the tannin reduces how much iron you can absorb from food.

Really interesting in learning more about this - where did you find this out?

Jesus actual Christ. Thirst is not a marketing ploy.

No, but telling the public they need to be surgically welded to a bottle of liquid is
And stupid people fall for it

They literally only drink tea when they're out. Tonight they'll drink nothing after about 4pm.

I'll have to go to the shops. They'll be offended, though.

My mum is like this.

No drinks with meals ever (except lots of alcohol with dinner).

Tea in thimble mugs.

I take my own mugs now.

Yes I have severe health issues and I often get thirsty. No I'm not normal in any meaning in the word.

Surely boiled water is better than none?

RampantIvy · 12/07/2024 08:24

I don't need to drink with food unless it is dry toast. I drink plenty of fluid throughout the day - mainly tea. I know I am well hydrated because my urine is pale yellow.

It is really shit when you're used to nice drinks. A genuine source of discomfort for guests.

Yes. It is totally weird to me to not have any soft drinks at all in the house. I don't like fizzy drinks...but I like juices, smoothies, squash, cordials. I honestly cannot imagine having nothing to drink in the house except tap water.

I've just done a therapy Waitrose shop for when I'm back. Wall to wall nice juices.

And I honestly would struggle to eat a meal without a drink on the side. I wouldn't enjoy it at all. Dh and I tend to have a pint glass of juice or squash with our dinner!

This spikes your insulin and coats your teeth with sugar every time you drink - fine with meals, not a great idea for most people between meals.

Funnywonder · 12/07/2024 08:27

Why on earth did you have to sneak a can of Diet Coke in your handbag? If you like Diet Coke, surely nobody will object if you arrive with a whole multipack under your arm?

S0livagant · 12/07/2024 08:27

You are being ridiculous. If you are thirsty you would drink boiled water.

Crisis averted then ...

Puffinfoot · 12/07/2024 08:29

A cup of hot water is what I drink all day everyday. Boil the water if you want a drink and that's what there is.

Who are these people you're staying with and is that the real reason you're so bothered by everything?

Begsthequestion · 12/07/2024 08:29

Juice is so sugary, makes me cringe. You'd be better off with boiled water, your pancreas will thank you later.

i dont need a drink when i eat

i wonder what is wrong with those that do need a drink to help their food go down

I need to drink with food as I often suddenly struggle to swallow. If I can't have a drink I'd rather not attempt eating just in case. I've been like this since I was a child but apparently nothing is ACTUALLY wrong with me according to the doctor. Maybe it's psychological I don't know. But either way I don't like to risk choking to death so I always need a drink to hand.
Sometimes I can get through an entire meal and not need the drink. Others it's most mouthfuls. Weirdly it also can happen with soup. It's very strange. I am inclined to agree that it's psychological but it doesn't stop it being any less scary when it happens.

DeedlessIndeed · 12/07/2024 08:29

I grew up in a family when parents wouldn't drink water. They'd have a cup of tea or coffee after a meal. On a hot day it would be squash (generally really quite strong too!) I always used to get headaches.

Now I drink all the time. There is no way I could stay somewhere that doesn't have drinks available (clean, safe tap water would be fine) - it would probably make me feel a bit panicky not being able to readily access it.
