To wonder what is wrong with people who don't really drink

OptimismvsRealism · 12/07/2024 07:12

No - not alcohol

Just liquid

People who can sit down to a meal without so much as a glass of water

People who invite guests to stay but have nothing to offer them to drink oh and you'd have to boil the tapwater haha

I can't sleep from thinking about this

I am very thirsty but lukewarm unclean be water will not satisfy my thirst

So boil up a load every day and let it go properly cold. If it's boiled it'll be clean.

LemonandLimeCake · 12/07/2024 08:32

If you're losing sleep over this (genuinely) I think it's you who needs help not the non-drinkers.

Losing sleep? Are you serious?

Not really sure where you're coming from on this.
Do you mean people you invite to your house?
Or when you go to other people's?
Or when you are out for a meal with other people?

There are lots of reasons why people might not drink with a meal.
Maybe they have a health/bladder issue and don't want to use a public loo - or your loo.

Who knows?

I often don't drink at home with my lunch or dinner, but I do drink plenty during the day.

I also prefer boiled water as without boiling our tap water smells and tastes of chlorine.

Well I think that's really weird.

Can't tell if OP is being literal, but if it is chemically treated, and the residents themselves don't drink it, then there is a chance it's not great.

There are plenty of places where you still have to buy in drinking water in bulk, so I can understand her not wanting to risk it.

Wonder if it’s slightly generational. I’ve noticed my (boomer) parents and their siblings don’t have water with meals. I hate eating without water to hand. Then again I don’t carry a water bottle everywhere whereas my kids do, so they’re even more hydrated!

I'm my experience children carry water bottles and don't drink it.

LemonandLimeCake · 12/07/2024 08:34

You're entitled to think whatever you like.

Not sure which part of my post you think is weird.

Is it that I drink over the day but don't have water or a drink with a meal?

Is it that I prefer to drink boiled water? (Not always but sometimes.)

You don't have our water supply assume.

I can assure you it tastes/smells of chlorine and this is reduced after boiling.

Your life must be very empty to even think on this.

MrsBobtonTrent · 12/07/2024 08:35

It’s a habit. If you are used to drinking a lot, your body processes it faster and you “need” to drink more. If you drink less, your body processes it more efficiently and you don’t feel desperate for a drink all the time. I’m the latter, but have a basic offering (tea, coffee, squash, fizzy water) plus tap water in the fridge.

But OP you anticipated the drinks issue at this house while only bringing one can of Diet Coke. So the suffering is on you. If I am going somewhere that I know will be lacking something I need, I take it with me. It’s the only sane way. Knowing and not preparing, then griping is utterly pointless.

DeedlessIndeed · 12/07/2024 08:35

Also, I would say it's pretty bad hosting if you have a guest over who has to boil their own drinking water. Surely they'd make SOME kind of provision for the fact humans might need to consume fluids after 4pm.

Give me some peer-reviewed scientific papers rather than a couple of blogs and a feature, then you can say I am wrong

Yep. The scientific community generally supports drinking water and there is no proper evidence at all to say it adversely affects digestion.

The only people I know who don’t drink much are all 70+. They drink tea or coffee but nothing else. One gets frequent urine infections and has been in hospital twice with kidney infections. He has been told numerous times to drink water but he just doesn’t. He doesn’t have dementia in case anyone reading suggests that it is just that this is how he has always lived and he is very resistant to change of any sort.
I don’t want to make sweeping generalisations about people over 70 btw, these are just the people I happen to know.
Personally I always have a drink with food partly because I worry about choking on something and partly because I like it.

you really think you cannot eat a meal without choking unless you have a drink????

Willmafrockfit · 12/07/2024 07:18

i dont need a drink when i eat

i wonder what is wrong with those that do need a drink to help their food go down

This. It’s weird.

AcademicsAgain · 12/07/2024 08:38

If we had guests staying I would buy juice etc. But we just drink lots of tap water at home. Love it!

5128gap · 12/07/2024 08:39

The issues people believe are 'cured' by a prescribed amount of water are often ones that people who don't drink this amount dont experience in the first place. If you eat a diet rich in fruit and veg with a high water content, low salt, low/no alcohol and caffeine, sweat minimally due to lack of excess weight, balanced hormones, moderate climate, and low or no meat, you are highly unlikely to experience constipation, headaches etc by simply following your thirst. People's bodies are out of balance for a variety of lifestyle reasons, and 2 litres of water is an easy way to temporarily alleviate the impact of that. It also gives the illusion of doing something proactive and positive for health/weight loss/beauty without a need to do very much so has gained a lot of traction.

LakesideInn · 12/07/2024 08:42

@OptimismvsRealism are you saying these people have no drinkable supply of water to their house (even if boiled)? And rather than get in any packaged drinks they simply don’t drink any fluids at home at all? Ever? Because that is a bit mad.

It’s horrible being thirsty and unable to quench your thirst, it’s horrible getting one of those tight headaches which just need a big glass or two of cold water to rehydrate you and make you feel better, and it’s horrible being in someone else’s house and feeling that you can’t just do what you need or would like to do.

Will they really be offended if you go and buy yourself a big pack of bottled water so you have something to drink for the rest of your stay?

Gingerdancedbackwards · 12/07/2024 08:43

Naminyolk · 12/07/2024 08:15

Do they drink the tap water OP or bottled? I don't understand how they literally never ever consume water.

what do you think tea and coffee are made with?
Just because you put something into the water, doesn't negate it's thirst-quenching qualities
Unless you add sugar or sugar substitutes

Oh dear
You need to read different articles
Nothing true in those pearls!

She's definitely not wrong about the tea with meals. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002916522026983#:~:text=Conclusion,in%20increased%20nonheme%20iron%20absorption.

Bohomovies · 12/07/2024 08:50

I never get thirsty. When I first moved in with my partner he noticed I never drink water and said it was really weird. I have to make a real effort to drink water, but I usually forget.

Choochoo21 · 12/07/2024 08:52

YABU to not just drink boiled tap water.

But YANBU to not like being thirsty.

I drink loads and I feel poorly if I don’t drink enough.
I have to have a glass of water before eating and during eating.

I went on holiday and didn’t realise that you couldn’t drink tap water.
I had a panic over it because I took for granted how many times a day I would just use the tap without evening thinking.

In the end I got into a routine of boiling the kettle a few times a day and filling a jug which I kept in the fridge.
So all day I had nice chilled water straight from the fridge.

Puffinfoot · 12/07/2024 08:54

You sound like a child complaining they're hungry, but refusing to eat anything on offer.

I think the OP has completely exaggerated this situation.
Why go and stay with people who live in such primitive conditions if they are not the conditions she wants?
Or it's just a lie/child playing on mummy's computer

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/07/2024 08:56

I need a know where you are @OptimismvsRealism I'm invested now 😂 You're obviously in the arsehole of nowhere considering the well is the water source and no local shops. I drink loads of water so totally sympathise! I take it you're reliant on someone else for transport otherwise I'd be away to the nearest supermarket and be filling my boot with bottled water etc!

Octavia64 · 12/07/2024 08:59

To those recommending boiling the water:

If the water source is a private well then the water might have all kinds in it.

Tap water as provided in the UK is safe to drink. It doesn't have any heavy metals, chemical contamination, etc etc.

A well that has been sunk in the ground might have germs and chemical contamination - mercury or lead.

Boiling the water from a private well will get rid of most of the germs but won't do anything about chemical contamination.

They literally only drink tea when they're out. Tonight they'll drink nothing after about 4pm.

I'll have to go to the shops. They'll be offended, though.

Are they eccentric or just plain rude?

To not have any drinks available to your guests and then be offended when they bring or buy their own is quite baffling.

Are they friends or family?
