To wonder what is wrong with people who don't really drink

No - not alcohol

Just liquid

People who can sit down to a meal without so much as a glass of water

People who invite guests to stay but have nothing to offer them to drink oh and you'd have to boil the tapwater haha

I can't sleep from thinking about this

My mother said that her mother was told by the doctor never to give drinks before or with meals as the child will fill up on liquids, not eat their meal and then be hungry later.

I find my parents don't drink very much at all and then it's always tea. Unless it was my house, then any sugar taxed soft drink by the pint was preferred. When I used to go over there I made sure I took my own bottles of water, as getting a glass of water from the tap at any time would draw questions as to why it was needed.

Of course people will feel the sensation of thirst. If though you are constantly feeling thirsty then you may have an underlying health condition- get it checked out

No - drinking 8 glasses of liquid a day is normal.

or just in very bad habits

MikeRafone · 12/07/2024 07:51

Because the water here comes off a private well and isn't safe to drink.

pop it in the kettle and drink it when it’s cooled down to drinking temperature

Ryeman · 12/07/2024 07:52

I think we’ve been conditioned in the last 20-30 years to think we need to be drinking all the time and it’s become a habit for some. There’s really no need. Food provides quite a lot of water. I don’t really drink a lot of water and my kids are the same. My youngest regularly comes home with a full water bottle.

oakleaffy · 12/07/2024 07:52

I remember a person I stayed with [When young] not allowing water with food -It was very difficult to eat.

Then boil it then if that's what they do?

I see.
I've stayed somewhere with well water and we just drank it; it may have been of a higher standard of course.
Couldn't you just boil 2 or 3 kettles of water and keep the result in a jug you could then top yourself up with?

No - drinking 8 glasses of liquid a day is normal.

no, it is an invention by drinks companies, especially bottled water companies. Not necessary, or even desirable - just a bad habit and a fad.

And you can see what a bad unhealthy habit it is by the effect it is having on you right now, it is like you have a compulsion, like a child sucking a dummy.

Comedycook · 12/07/2024 07:53

I honestly can't enjoy a meal without a drink of juice/squash. Water is not enough when I'm eating.

We recently went to someone's house. They had no juice, no squash,no milk, no fizzy drinks..just tap water. 😮

No, it is not.
People's hydration requirements are not the same.
So please don't spread unfactual statements
Do you work for a water company?

Drinking 8 glasses of liquid isn’t normal, many people don’t drink that much fluid daily

I agree, it is just a marketing ploy- totally unnecessary.

Just come back from a trip staying with the in laws and DH and I were both pondering how little they drink funnily enough. They said they don't drink often because they will need the loo more. It's not just them though - I have friends who drink next to nothing! A few years ago I upped my water consumption and now I feel quite dehydrated if I don't get enough, whereas before I wouldn't have, so I think it's what your body is used to.

MikeRafone · 12/07/2024 07:56

Thing is well water that is boiled so safe, will be far better than bottled water 😂

bottled water regulations are pretty woeful, far worse than water company standards

Gingerdancedbackwards · 12/07/2024 07:56

OptimismvsRealism · 12/07/2024 07:44

I guess people who don't feel thirst don't understand that it's torture for people who do.

Well ask for a bloody drink

RaininSummer · 12/07/2024 07:56

I never drank much as a child and actually had such dry skin my lower legs looked cracked. Now I am always drinking water, tea or coffee as I get utis so quickly that even a 4 hour drive can be a trigger if I forget to guzzle loads when we stop for a break. I don't carry water around generally though.

It is really shit when you're used to nice drinks. A genuine source of discomfort for guests.

The reason I can't sleep is that I'm currently a guest at a no beverages household.

I saw this coming and managed to sneak one can on diet coke into my handbag on the way here but I need to make it count. Unsure when best to drink it to minimise risk of death by dehydration.

My head hurts so much. I'd have had a big iced water by now.

What a bizarre problem you are having OP!
Just go get a glass of tap water if you're thirsty FFS!
A 5 year old would do that. I assume you are an adult.
I see Coke as a treat not a solution to thirst. Not sure why you need to smuggle the can into the house and hide it.
I can't understand people drinking throughout meals, unless it is wine.
I always have glass of water with my meal (occasionally fresh fruit juice) but I don't always drink it. I might drink some before desert and after finishing the meal.
I don't drink alcohol or fizzy or sugary drinks at all.
But I drink plenty of water throughout the day if I actually feel thirsty.

CheeseWisely · 12/07/2024 07:57

Meanwhile I think it's weird that people (including DH) cannot leave the house without a litre water bottle. I call it his emotional support bottle. He's going to the corner shop, not trekking through the bloody Sahara.

When I was growing up we'd have a drink at breakfast time, one at school lunch and then after school. No water bottles on desks all day, or water fountains. I still drink relatively little unless I'm actively trying to take on more liquid (like now as I'm breastfeeding).
