Tesco - football final

I'm as chuffed as anyone about England reaching the final, just to be clear I'm not bashing that
But.... DH works for Tesco express, who only close on Christmas Day.
Just had a notification that express stores will close at 7.30pm on Sunday, to allow staff to watch the football.
He's delighted of course, as otherwise would have missed it, here's my AIBU, they have normal opening hours on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday etc etc
But can find it in their hearts to close early for a football final?
Bonkers!

Waitrose seems to be operating normal hours so mumsnetters can breathe a sigh of relief

I'm sure the tag line was something along the lines of "every goal helps"

That's pretty clever! Good on Tesco.

I'm not a football fan ion any way, shape or form, but will be watching on Sunday , hopefully.

It's because they'll be empty. They've been busy before games, selling alcohol, but very quiet during them, there'll be no point opening.

Our local pub, which doesn't have TVs has also said it's closing, as they've only had a handful of customers during Englaand games.

DS works for Tesco Express and TBH, compared to other retail jobs they seem to look after their staff very well.

As I understand it, all staff are getting paid for those hours, regardless of whether they were scheduled.

It's a money saving thing. They know they won't make enough money in the stores to cover staffing them so finish the staff early they don't have to pay them

They're paying everyone, according to DS, even those not scheduled to work.

So the many shelf stackers, order fillers and delivery drivers will be working as normal Sunday evening.
The cynic in me says it's about minimising the theft and bad behaviour of customers rather than the staff.

I work until 8pm in a supermarket on Sundays and we’ve been given the option of starting 30 minutes early so we can leave at 7:30, as far as it’s possible they’re trying to make it possible for as many staff as they can to be allowed to move shifts around.

Yes shutting at 4pm because it’s a Sunday…

What about other workers? Why do we assume Tesco staff will call in sick more than any other business, public service? It’s a pathetic work ethic.

That's the staffing business model. You only need to give a weeks notice, you can pick up overtime that suits you not the managers, paid by the hour.

@OonaStubbs Monday is the new Saturday for Italy and Spain. Many places open Saturday morning so Monday morning they shut.
