Tesco - football final

countvoncount · 11/07/2024 20:04

I'm as chuffed as anyone about England reaching the final, just to be clear I'm not bashing that
But.... DH works for Tesco express, who only close on Christmas Day.
Just had a notification that express stores will close at 7.30pm on Sunday, to allow staff to watch the football.
He's delighted of course, as otherwise would have missed it, here's my AIBU, they have normal opening hours on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday etc etc
But can find it in their hearts to close early for a football final?
Bonkers!

It gives them good employer points with all the staff on a day that a huge amount of the population will not be out shopping at tesco express because they will be watching the football.
It's not comparable with many of the dates you mentioned as they are all extremely busy shopping days. Tesco would lose millions if not billions if they shut on days like Christmas eve

mondaytosunday · 11/07/2024 22:30

Im amazed. There must be loads of people who couldn't care less about the footie and may well be expecting normal hours of operation. Hope they are advertising the fact.

Rockmumontherun · 11/07/2024 22:31

I went to Aldi and then sainsburys on Wed at about 7 pm. There was hardly anyone in the shop and I got back in time to see the match 😁

While I think it’s a nice gesture of Tesco, I’d like to know if they did the same for the lionesses when they were in the final? Or is it only when the men’s team play they close the stores?

Think the womens kicked off at 5pm cos it was on home soil and more popular with children. So I doubt Tesco made the business decision to shut its express stores that early due to loss of earnings.

WingsofRain · 11/07/2024 22:33

I assume Tesco aren’t closing any shops up here, I can’t see there would be the same level of interest.

Stores in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will maintain their regular operating hours.

pavillion1 · 11/07/2024 22:35

no but then he is fucking boring

OonaStubbs · 11/07/2024 22:35

Are they doing this in Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland?

Football is very popular. I imagine the match on Sunday will be the most viewed TV programme in many years.

Wasn't the Lioness's final in Australia so the time frame was very different?
In 2028 the Euros will be held in the UK, look forward to it!

Mainoo72 · 11/07/2024 20:28

Quite a few companies are doing this-OneStop & Sainsbury’s included. I think it’s a great idea. Potentially a once in a lifetime event!

One stop is part of Tesco

OonaStubbs · 11/07/2024 22:41

The lionesses world cup final was in Australia but the Euro final was not.

itsmylife7 · 11/07/2024 22:44

MumDoingMyBest · 11/07/2024 20:30

Did any shut for the women's world cup final last year?

That's a really good question but I've got no idea.

TinkerTiger · 11/07/2024 22:46

I guess it's also bc the other days you mention happen every year.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 11/07/2024 22:47

itsmylife7 · 11/07/2024 22:44

That's a really good question but I've got no idea.

I'm pretty sure nothing shut for the woman's final when they won. There was actually some complaints from people on the news earlier when people were talking about the potential of a bank holiday Monday if England win... Because they didn't do that for the women..

OonaStubbs · 11/07/2024 22:49

It will not be a bank holiday on Monday if England win. You can't have a bank holiday on a few hours notice. It would be chaos.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 11/07/2024 22:50

Urghhh I really despise how obsessed England gets with football. Was already pissed off today that they're trying to get a Bank Holiday if they win it. So annoying for self-employed people who then lose a day's pay, then the activities we do on Monday's will be cancelled because of it, despite us having to pay for it regardless. I can't stand football, I really can't, and this obsession England has with men kicking a ball around it just ridiculous. Not everyone likes football FFS.

OonaStubbs · 11/07/2024 22:55

It's hardly just England that has an obsession with Football.

And that's fair enough. Not everyone likes football and no one is compelled to do so.

But whether you like it or not, there are bloody millions of people in this country that DO like football, especially the big tournaments.

Whatever prompted Tesco's decision, if it gives people the chance to come together and enjoy a big event, then it's a good thing.

Also, I'm self-employed and I still think it's great.

There's enough shitty bad news to go around - anything that brings people a bit of joy is something to be celebrated I think, even if you don't want to be part of it.

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 11/07/2024 23:04

So the many shelf stackers, order fillers and delivery drivers will be working as normal Sunday evening.
The cynic in me says it's about minimising the theft and bad behaviour of customers rather than the staff.

But a lot of people do. In fact I would say the majority of the population of England will be watching the match on Sunday. The streets will be deserted, pubs will be heaving. I’m not a massive football fan, but I certainly don’t deny anyone the obvious joy they get from it. Life is pretty crap atm in the UK, so I’m all for making the place a bit brighter.

Dibbydoos · 11/07/2024 23:07

It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming, football's coming home...

I don't have an issue with people enjoying themselves but this really shouldn't negatively impact those of us who don't like football. This is the thing with football, you can't get away from it, it's everywhere, I find it baffling, as no other sport is treated this way. I also have an issue with the rise in domestic violence due to football. I also have an issue with struggling to pay the bills due to missed pay (both myself and my husband are self-employed, and we'll lose a lot of money both missing a day). But hopefully they'll not do the BH anyway, as they didn't for the women, and it is only fucking football.

OonaStubbs · 11/07/2024 23:13

Are self-employed people obliged not to work on bank holidays?

Football is "treated this way" because it's so popular. Not the other way round.

Boymum2104 · 11/07/2024 23:27

You don't shut your business during the busiest season of the year whereas Sunday night when football is on Tesco will likely be empty anyway

MyGladEagle · 11/07/2024 23:30

Shut for 2.5 hours when the store is going to be quieter than usual. Oh no!

How miserable are people these days!

Lets just ban maternity leave because not everyone likes kids!
