Tesco - football final

countvoncount · 11/07/2024 20:04

I'm as chuffed as anyone about England reaching the final, just to be clear I'm not bashing that
But.... DH works for Tesco express, who only close on Christmas Day.
Just had a notification that express stores will close at 7.30pm on Sunday, to allow staff to watch the football.
He's delighted of course, as otherwise would have missed it, here's my AIBU, they have normal opening hours on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday etc etc
But can find it in their hearts to close early for a football final?
Bonkers!

But this sort of thing doesn't occur every year, it last happened in 1966.

Crinklycrisp · 11/07/2024 20:42

So shops can't do a good thing without most of MN moaning about it.

Lots of people do their shopping Xmas eve and in the sales on 1st Jan though.

This. Sorry but it's pretty obvious the two situations aren't the same. The turnover this Sunday evening would be negligible and now they've scored (no pun intended) some free publicity to a) make them look good and b) make people stock up more on the Saturday/Sunday morning.

Crinklycrisp · 11/07/2024 20:45

You will all just have to get your beer and crisps in earlier.

Last time England men's team was in the final of a major tournament was in 2021.

Spuds88 · 11/07/2024 20:52

Our local shop is a Tesco express and staff on that shift are expected to come in early and/or take it as holiday from what we’ve been told! Not quite as altruistic as it seems!

Moonshiners · 11/07/2024 20:57

It rarely happens.
I am more annoyed they didn't do it for the lionesses. But hey ho.

I think I was working that day. 🙁

Quite a few companies are doing this-OneStop & Sainsbury’s included. I think it’s a great idea. Potentially a once in a lifetime event!

Hardly, they made the final in 2021, and the women did in 2022 (and won). 3 times out of 4 years isn't a once in a lifetime event.

I bet we'll be bounced into a bank holiday if they win, even though it will cause mayhem for those unfortunate enough to have medical appointments and planned operations that day.

It isn't a good thing, it is a completely over the top reaction to a sporting event.

We don't all like football. It brings out the worst in people and every two years women can expect to be abused by their menfolk at some point during the tournaments.

RaininSummer · 11/07/2024 20:29

Seems a bit odd to me as there must be loads of people who have no interest in football.

Indeed. I might not decide to visit Tescos but it's a bit of an assumption to say everyone will be watching.

Oh stop whinging. I'm sure Waitrose will be open earlier in the day for you to get your supplies.

Is this the World Cup then?

I don't keep up with these things...

OhHelloMiss · 11/07/2024 21:14

It's nothing to do with the 1966 World Cup!

This is the Euros final

It's not a sporting event at this stage, sometimes things go beyond that. Lots of people with no interest in sport what significant events like this, eg the snooker final in the 80's, the late night Scottish curling in the winter olympics and Murray getting to a wimbledon final.

Football bringing out the worst in people is just a lazy point of view.

tillyandmilly · 11/07/2024 21:17

Ridiculous - I won’t be watching - other stuff to be doing - will they be closing early for the Wimbledon final- thought not!!!

Will there be a British player in the Wimbledon final?

Thought not!!!

Why would they though?

TheSerenePinkOrca · 11/07/2024 21:21

Yabu. That's fab they do that!

My ex many years ago had to install screens in the warehouse for a company he worked at during the world cup to stop people skiving work!

Stupid comparison. Wimbledon is a tennis tournament preceded and succeeded by many other tennis tournaments throughout the year, hardly a rare occurance.

Presumably they have made the assessment no one will want to shop there either as they'll all be at the pub/at home watching the game, so it's a commercial decision as well as a nice one?

100% this.

It's a shrewd business decision as custom will be way down plus it will only work in their favour by treating employees well.

There is a Brit in the men's doubles final 😁

User79853257976 · 11/07/2024 21:24

It’s a one off for a few hours and they know most people won’t be going shopping at that time.

We were still in the pandemic then, so no mingling (which would happen if everyone gets off work).

Shan5474 · 11/07/2024 21:27

I’m not a football fan so I find this idea quite bizarre. I would’ve thought many people carry on as normal or even would specifically go to a shop or restaurant knowing it’ll be quiet. I think it’s weird they don’t close for religious holidays or matters of state but close for a football game that isn’t even the most prestigious tournament. If I were you I’d also feel a bit miffed that your DH doesn’t get to spend Christmas Eve with his kids but is allowed time off to watch a match
