MN phrases that you would ban

I’ll go first..

Potty shot. 🤢
Makes me squirm. Nobody needs to be sharing their scan photos for strangers on the internet to (probably wrongly) guess their baby’s gender. The whole thing is ridiculous

Anyone starting their reply with their job and then the word ‘here’.

🤢

Bansheed · 12/07/2024 06:14

Naff.. makes me think that the poster is a really unpleasant snob

RenoDakota · 12/07/2024 06:49

Use your words.

You have a husband problem.

AIBU to feed my step-child gruel while my own children dine on caviar?

AcademicsAgain · 12/07/2024 07:42

Whilst I agree with most of these, they are really ‘online’ words or phrases that have been used over the last few years. I am not sure they are specific to MN. Other than ‘in jokes’ like the Sistine Chapel etc.

And some phrases like ‘nip it in the bud’ are pretty ordinary phrases. Blame the English language, not MN ;-)

As a general point, I dislike ‘ick’ as it is childish and ‘HTH’ as it is so patronising.

I don’t think there’d be much point banning phrases because other phrases would replace them and get annoying.

Interesting that we can get so annoyed by language.

I feel very unkeen on posts that start ‘I mean,….’

Yes, language has a lot of power.

I recently did a course about copywriting to portray your brand, and it was really interesting to see how different companies write their website copy to convey their brand values. Even two cancer charities wrote things completely differently because they had different audiences. Not something I'd ever really actively noticed before.

@parkrun500club

I also intensely dislike “parent” as a verb. It’s incredibly smug and self satisfied and also credits people with far more control over their kids than they actually have.

Yes I think that's why I dislike it too.

littlehorsesthatrun · 12/07/2024 07:53

It annoys me when people use the Maya Angelou quote’When people show you who they are believe them.’ It’s just overused

parkrun500club · 12/07/2024 07:54

'School mums', as if they're some kind of separate species

Some of them definitely are Grin

I also hate when people say "must be the school holidays" in a post they don't find believable.

Didn't want to read and run

Yes this is well meant but usually followed by really unhelpful advice !

brunettemic · 12/07/2024 08:35

“Name changed because it’s outing”…but then shares clear and specific details. People know who you are from the post not your screen name, I don’t get it. Sure, you can then go back to your usual name but the fact it’s your is already clearly there.
Also, not a phrase per se but excessively emotive language…along the lines of “I’m terrified of [insert situation that is about as likely as winning the lottery 10 weeks in a row or is an utterly mundane situation that is about as terrifying as the average new born puppy]”

TigerRag · 12/07/2024 08:37

I really worry about the mental health of people who go on about “bitchy, cliquey school mums” as if they were spies from a hostile nation. It’s lunacy to live like this.

That level of paranoia is completely at odds with normal social functioning and I worry about what they are passing on to their children.

multimillionaire · 12/07/2024 08:42

HTH. As if that’s all that needs to be said on the matter

I love HTH- its wonderfully passive aggressive 😆

I once saw a poster use ‘DDiPoW’, meaning ‘Darling Diana, Princess of Wales’… horrendous!

😆😆

Haven't seen it for a while but I used to get irritated by the deliberately snotty:-

“Netmums is that way Hun ---->”

excelledyourself · 12/07/2024 09:13

I never hear anyone in real life say they were "cross" about something, but see it a lot on here, and it just sounds completely devoid of any feeling.

I say 'I feel cross' in real life. Its a brilliant word. In fact I'm rather cross you don't like it. 😜

Not seen that one

What does it mean, I can't work it out

Give up the argument (usually with a MIL) stop playing mental tug of war.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/07/2024 09:32

Move22 · 11/07/2024 17:10

Per se

Not to mention per say!

PurpleChrayn · 12/07/2024 09:32

"What did they say when you confronted them?" 🙄
