They wont go where I go - original Stevie Wonder, covered by George Michael. It's just perfect in every single way.

AIBU or do you think there is a better cover???

Without a doubt panic at the discos version (live) of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Flawless and his vocal range is INSANE

I’d like to throw in Dear Pudence - siouxsie and the banshees, must better than the Beatles

And Helter Skelter.

Julyrainishere · 12/07/2024 11:36

Did not know about the Personal Jesus connection with Elvis.
Love the reference

TigerRag · 12/07/2024 11:38

And that's my weekend sorted...

Now off to see if there's a covers playlist on Spotify that's worth listening to.

Like others, there are a lot of songs in this thread that I was surprised at were cover versions.

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 12/07/2024 12:42

Song on the radio reminded me of another one - Florence and the machine’s cover of You’ve got the love. Far more tuneful than the original/remixes by Candi Staton.

justasoul · 12/07/2024 14:23

Likewise, just heard I’ve got you babe with UB40 and Chrissie Hynde on the radio and much prefer that to the original.

Haven't read the whole thread but Maxence Cyrin's instrumental piano cover version of The Pixies' "Where is my mind?" is a beautiful piece.

Placebo also covered that song.

Sorry, third and final one.
Carter USM's cover of Bedsitter is brilliant

Floatlikeafeather2 · 11/07/2024 23:43

I agree with so many of these (notably Hurt, Tainted Love and Dear Prudence) and some others I really want to go away and hear. Personal ones are The Pogues - Dirty Old Town
Happiness is a warm gun - The Breeders
The Boy in the Bubble - The Blue Aeroplanes
The Rainbow Girls - Down Home Girl
I can see clearly - Hothouse Flowers

ooooh Blue Aeroplanes! It's hard to track down but they also did a great version of Bad Moon Rising...

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/07/2024 15:43

Almost forgot The Mission covering Tomorrow Never Knows, soaring and jangling goth guitars all over it, awesome!

Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence. Incredible and brilliant. Even Paul Simon contacted Disturbed to say how good he thought it was.

Came here to say this!

Moonshiners · 11/07/2024 15:41

I can't believe everyone likes the Disturbed version I found it so shit!
But I also prefer Leonard Cohen's version of hallelujah. I love his raspy voice.

Me too. LC puts humour into it, which I guess is how he intended it to be. I love Jeff Buckley though (and love his version of Lilac Wine).

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 12/07/2024 16:15

George Michael and Prince both did brilliant cover versions of I Can't Make You Love Me. I also think Voice of the Beehive's version of the Partridge Family's I Think I Love You is excellent too!

I didn’t know they covered this, I don’t think I could bring myself to listen to it 😂 Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourite songs.

I love the Dire Straits version so much too, but I just listened to the Killers version and it’s surprisingly faithful. I knew Dire Strait’s guitars would probably be better, but I was a tad shocked that Mark Knocker’s vocals were much better too, because I’ve never thought he had the greatest voice. So while the original is still best, I enjoyed the Killer’s version.

Agree with the Bob Dylan comments. I was quite old when I suddenly realised that I like quite a few Dylan songs just not necessarily sung by the man himself 😀 (and I’m another who prefers Cohen’s Hallelujah although Buckley does the best of all the covers).

Anyway, one Dylan cover I love is The Whitlams Tangled up in Blue

Appalonia · 12/07/2024 19:09

This is a true cover, sounds completely different from the original, in fact you have to listen really closely to hear it. It's by 2 Brazilian artists Seu Jorge and Ana Carolina. You'll probably never have heard it but it's absolutely beautiful. It's a cover of The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice. Enjoy!

I love this cover

LondonLass61 · 12/07/2024 21:33

I love a good cover.
Erasure - Gaudete
I can't make you love me - George Michael (i miss him 😞)
Common People - William Shatner
Windmills of your mind - Dusty Springfield
He'll have to go - Bryan Ferry
Diamonds are forever - Arctic Monkeys
I'm also a huge fan of the album Rock Swings by Paul Anka - you're welcome.

CynicalSunni · 12/07/2024 21:37

I recently discovered Johnny Cash's version of one love its pretty nice

25thCenturyQuaker · 12/07/2024 21:40

One for the Zeppelin fans -

I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but equally good in it's own way. And unjustifiably overlooked - Sandie was a great singer given the right material.
