They wont go where I go - original Stevie Wonder, covered by George Michael. It's just perfect in every single way.

AIBU or do you think there is a better cover???

Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You

UB40's Red Red Wine

Ooh no, I disagree!

Whitney Houston was far too overwrought for my taste and her ott rendition changed the whole meaning of Dolly's gentle little break-up song.

Neil Diamond put emotion and passion into Red Red Wine, whereas UB40 just changed the rhythm and sang the words. Their version doesn't feel real and personal in the way that Diamond's version does.

Susan Boyle’s Mad World is haunting. Not saying it’s better than the original, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Never heard that! Must look it up.

Also I love George Michael for bringing As and I Can’t Make You Love Me to more ears, but Stevie & Bonnie Raitt can’t be beaten.

I preferred George to Bonnie Rait. But I did hear his first. Such a great song though.

Sophie Ellis Bextor’s covers of True Faith and Duel are brilliant.

No, you've got it in one! That is the best, from my favourite GM album 👍

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - Wuthering Heights ❤️

Fall Out Boy - Beat It
Fozzy -SOS
Manic Street Preachers- umbrella

My first thought was All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. Once Dylan heard this version, he always used this arrangement, not his own, when playing it live.

cookiebee · 12/07/2024 07:12

It doesn’t matter anymore - Linda Ronstadt

Up on the roof - Dusty Springfield

We’ve only just begun - Barbra Streisand

Inertia · 12/07/2024 07:18

Head On -Pixies
Step On - Happy Mondays

Also love Kirsty McColl’s covers of Days and A New England .

Clawdy · 12/07/2024 08:11

Love PJ Proby's version of Louisiana Man.

Stereophonics Handbags and gladrags
Depeche Mode Personal Jesus
Freemasons Uninvited (although Alanis Morissette when I’m having the blues!)

I never knew Depeche Mode covered Personal Jesus. Who did the original?

Johnny Cash - who I love - but his version is not great IMHO!

@Mairzydotes Oopsies!! Just been informed by DH it’s the other way around!! Johnny’s was the cover apparently- I (wrongly) assumed he did it first just because he’d been around longer.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/07/2024 08:24

The White Stripes - I'm Shakin'. You can't help but move to it, it's so full of energy.

DiVilliers80 · 12/07/2024 08:29

More a pastiche than cover, but the Wurzels - Combine harvester song is a genius vesion of Melanie's Brand New Key.

Yes - I was going to say it's the other way round! Personal Jesus is definitely an original Depeche Mode song. Martin Gore wrote it and says he was inspired by Priscilla Presley's idolatry of Elvis.

I didn’t know the Elvis connection either - it’s a top toon!

Love Dylan but agree about this cover. Hendrix's guitar playing is like no-one else's.

Sure isn't that the beauty of it! See also my pp about a hoover 😁

It is! David Bowie wrote a tribute song to him with the line "a voice like sand and glue" 😆

Woahtherehoney · 12/07/2024 10:44

Just wanted to come back and add Nirvana’s Cover of The Man Who Sold The World. Bowie is excellent but they just did something to that song that made it even more brilliant.
