Posting for traffic, sorry.
my ds2 woke up about 40mins ago and has been crying ever since. Well, he cries when he tries to bf. I can’t work out if it’s his throat or not? He might seem more upset when he swallows, but I can’t be sure. This is very out of character for him.
he’s had a cold the past week and is still quite snotty. He hast had or got a temp or a rash that I can see.
what should I do? Wait it out until the morning and see the gp?
need a hand hold as I’m on my own

oh gosh sorry OP, impossible to say... does he know what's wrong / if anything hurts? Would he have some calpol see if that helps and if not make a decision then ?

Aquamarine1029 · 11/07/2024 02:16

First thought is an ear infection, possible strep. I'd get him seen as soon as you can.

Runnerinthenight · 11/07/2024 02:17

Give him some Calpol and see how he is x

He’s refusing calpol(always does though). I’ve tried asking him if anything hurts, but he isn’t saying anything. Nothing that I can work out, anyway. He’s quiet, watching tv, until he swallows. He’s refusing boob too-very unlike him-which is also making me think it’s his throat. Hope he has t got tonsillitis. He’s had that about a year ago. My poor little boy. Breaks my heart seeing him like this.
thanks so much for replying

He isn’t touching his ears or pointing to anywhere that hurts.
should I take him to the out of hours or wait until morning?

Have you got a syringe to get Calpol into him?

Eggyleggy · 11/07/2024 02:20

Poor baby and poor you. Its really hard when they can't tell you what's up. How old it he? Would he usually feed at this time of night? I wonder if his blocked snotty nose is making it hard to breathe when breastfeeding making him worked up? You could try running the shower really hot then going in the bathroom (not under the shower) and letting the steam unclog him a bit.

Sadly not. They got lost some time ago so just rely on a spoon now

As you have another little boy, and given what you have said here, I think I would wait until the morning. You need to somehow get some Calpol into him and intersprese it with Nurofen if you have it.

Yes he does wake up sometimes for a quick feed. We co-sleep so it doesn’t tend to disturb either of us. He’s 2

Then I think you might have to insist on the Calpol, sorry!

As awful as it sounds it n this situation its a two man pin him down job one to bear hug him and sing softly in his ear and the other to throw the spoon in once he opens his mouth wide enough

You need to get some meds into him so you can both sleep!!

Runnerinthenight · 11/07/2024 02:28

I used to pin mine on their backs on the floor sitting on them to get meds into them! It was for their own good!

Stango · 11/07/2024 02:29

He’s on the boob now! Not as enthusiastic as usual, but it’s something.
times like this, I’m so glad we’re still bf. It’s magic

I breastfeed my eldest two until they were 1 (wish I had done it for longer but had my reasons) and the youngest until they decided they had had enough a couple of months before turning 2! It's so lovely!

It really is. I know people may think he’s too old now, but it fixes most issues! We’re in no rush to stop

He’s fallen asleep…
think we’ll sleep on the sofa for the time being so I don’t disturb him moving him up to bed
thanks ladies, for keeping me company during my panic xxx
I’ll give the gp a call in the morning and get him checked over

Glad he is asleep now OP, agree BF is magic and hopefully you can get an appointment in the morning to figure out what's going on x

Stango · 11/07/2024 03:14

Going to attempt to move us up to bed… need hone my ninja skills so I don’t wake him up!

Quick update. Just seen our GP and, as I thought, it’s tonsillitis. Poor little squirrel. 10 day course of antibiotics for him.
thanks again for keeping me company in the night xxx
