Neighbours keeping hold of parcels

Bride2Be25 · 10/07/2024 16:17

AIBU to think it’s a bit rude to hold onto your neighbours parcel when it has been incorrectly delivered to you?!

Royal Mail have delivered my parcel to someone else - all I’ve got to go on from the photo is a pair of feet. I’ve posted on our local FB page but no one has responded so I’ll be knocking on all the neighbours doors until I find it but I just find it so odd that people don’t drop it round ! I see so many people posting on FB asking if people recognise that door or those feet so I’m definitely not alone. I always drop parcels & post off if it’s not mine, surely it’s just a nice neighborly thing to do?!

Also just to add it’s taken me a while to find the tracking details but I can see it was delivered a week ago!

I refuse to take in parcels, other than my actual neighbour, after in Nov/Dec, I had a parcel delivered to someone a few doors down who has an attitude problem about me. I have done nothing wrong but reported her for constant fly tipping and she's stupid enough not to remove her name and address from the parcel box.

I just say to couriers I am out all day or have problems with them.

Fortunately most couriers do hide my parcels in the recess created behind the wheelie bin against the wall.

Bride2Be25 · 11/07/2024 10:47

@MeAgainAndAgain initially presumed that delivery was just taking a while so only realised a couple of days ago that it has been delivered to the wrong person. Royal Mail only have the photo & a map saying it’s been delivered to our house 🤔

I’ve knocked on all my neighbours doors, everyone that answered didn’t have it so I’ll try the people who didn’t answer again today and if not put notes through their doors with my number so they can text me if they have it and I can go get it.

Ive also posted on our local FB group which has sparked a fierce debate around the legalities of taking in someone’s parcel 😬

I’m definitely not just sitting around waiting for someone to give it to me, just frustrating not knowing where it actually is.

@Bride2Be25 “Royal Mail only have the photo & a map saying it’s been delivered to our house”

Ok so when you called the shop yesterday to say it has not been delivered even though you have paid for it what did they say?

MeAgainAndAgain · 11/07/2024 11:31

Sorry @Bride2Be25 just one more question. When you said Royal Mail have ‘the photo and a map’ do you mean you actually spoke to a person and asked them questions? Or you just looked at the tracking online?

Tamuchly · 11/07/2024 12:33

I take in parcels for some of my neighbours…but not all. I was accused of theft last year by that particular neighbour who decided I had his parcel when I didn’t. After he yelled at me that I “must have it!” and to just “give it back”, my NDN popped out to say that it had been delivered to her. No apology, just a “humph” as he strode over to pick it up from her!

If any of my parcels are delivered elsewhere, I always go and collect them as I don’t want to inconvenience my neighbours and put them off taking parcels in the future. I do sometimes deliver light items to my neighbours but expect them to collect the heavy stuff.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 11/07/2024 13:35

I'm quite happy to take parcels in for my neighbours as I'm generally here and it's no inconvenience. That's a nice courtesy that i extend.

But I'm not a fucking courier, and I'm certainly not about to start traipsing about delivering parcels that really people should have managed better in the first place.

Auburngal · 11/07/2024 14:04

If I’m ordering something which I have control over what day I can get it delivered I will select a day which I’m not working, out.

Had taken in parcels for neighbours in the past and parcels were from retailers where you can choose the day of delivery. Most of the deliveries on day of choice are 8am-10pm. Usually get a 1-2 hour window the day of delivery and could nip out to get bread etc around the time

Have you spoken to the sender and royal mail?
If you didn't get a note it's probably been delivered to the entirely wrong address in error, not just delivered to a neighbour as you weren't in.
In that case it may not even be in the same village. RM should have a GPS location.

I have accidentally opened parcels before, assuming it was mine without checking the address label, and then realised its someone else's. But if I did realise I may not have the capability to take something round, I might just send it back.

We also have a neighbour that frequently orders and selects the wrong house number....she is 20+ houses away and round a corner. It was pure fluke we were able to work out which address it should be the first time.

FTPM1980 · 11/07/2024 14:12

Sorry just seen RM map shows your house?
You need to contact them as their systems have gone wrong, or someone at your house has accepted it, or the postie has taken it.

OP was at home

mondaytosunday · 11/07/2024 18:24

It's RM fault for not leaving the address it was delivered to. The person who took it in probably assumed they did and is waiting for you to collect it.
I get temperature sensitive medicine delivered by RM. They never leave a card saying 'missed delivery' so I can go collect it. I I have to chase the dispensing company who then have to find the tracking number then I have to chase it with RM.
So - ring up RM and ask for where they delivered it to! It's their responsibility.

This ⬆️

I used to be happy to take parcels .. my neighbours took the piss and I was taking parcels in all the time ..probably cause I work from home and ‘don’t have anything better to do!’
the amount of times I had to excuse myself from a teams meeting to shut the dogs up and put them away to answer the door for parcels that weren’t ours was a pisstake!
Final straw was he had a load of car cleaning stuff that came to mine … I’m talking 6 x bulky boxes that each weighed a bloody tonne.. they clogged up my hallway for around a week before he could be arsed to come and collect them!

I certainly was not going to deliver them to him!

I refuse to take parcels in for them now ..I’ve never needed them to take parcels in for me - couriers like dpd, yodel, Royal Mail and Evri send emails with a time slot - if I know I’m not going to be here then I will rearrange for another day or put in leave in safe place!
I see her going out and then courier turns up 20 minutes later .. I now don’t answer the door unless we are expecting something!

Emmz1510 · 14/07/2024 05:19

FGS people are you all deliberately misinterpreting the OP? She clearly DOESNT KNOW where it is. She isn’t being lazy or entitled.
OP, the person who took in the parcel obviously doesnt know you don’t know they have it and perhaps they aren’t on Facebook to see your community post.
I think knocking on neighbours doors is probably your best option here.
The email that shows the persons feet- is it from a courier company or Royal Mail? You need to contact them and report you don’t have it if knocking on doors doesn’t work.

Vse500 · 14/07/2024 08:12

They HAVE helped you out - by taking in your parcel in the first place!

“You need to contact them [Royal Mail] and report you don’t have it”

People have said that. OP has not answered the question when asked if she has actually called them up, despite being online since then 🤷‍♀️.

Some people just don’t want to do the obvious solution.

CleaningAngel · 14/07/2024 10:47

Bride2Be25 · 10/07/2024 16:32

Also just to make clear we have had no delivery note from Royal Mail - all I have is a photo of someone’s socks !

So if royal mail photographed a person's feet, then said person took your package knowing it didn't have their name on it and it wasn't theirs!..presuming said person knows their own name 🤔

urbanbuddha · 14/07/2024 11:32

They HAVE helped you out - by taking in your parcel in the first place!

Nope. They haven’t helped the OP at all.
They’ve helped the driver out but not the OP. She doesn’t know where her parcel is.

Matronic6 · 14/07/2024 11:37

The problem is with the courier not being clear where they have left the parcel
This happened to me recently when they said delivery was completed and the proof was a photo of a house and set of feet I also did not recognize.

We checked every flat on the floor, none had it, then the whole floor below to no avail. Had knocked on 22 doors before we found it.

HoppityBun · 14/07/2024 11:39

CandiedPrincess · 10/07/2024 16:26

Yeah if something gets delivered to my houes, come and get it. I ain't searching for you.

But she doesn’t know who or where, whereas they have her address, obviously.

Vse500 · 14/07/2024 08:12

How have they helped her out?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 14/07/2024 12:20

Not everyone has Facebook, hopefully you get it back or you report it as being undelivered.

Jegersur · 14/07/2024 13:32

Bluebirdover · 14/07/2024 12:17

How have they helped her out?

As it says - by taking in her parcel.

Bluebirdover · 14/07/2024 13:52

@Jegersur as it says but she was in and the courier delivered it to them and she doesn't know where they are.

Again, how has that helped the OP?

Welshmonster · 14/07/2024 15:16

The problem is that couriers don’t tell the recipient where they have left your parcel. People don’t know where to Collect it from. I only take in parcels for my direct neighbours and check the address on it to make sure it is theirs.

MeAgainAndAgain · 14/07/2024 15:49

Bluebirdover · 14/07/2024 13:52

@Jegersur as it says but she was in and the courier delivered it to them and she doesn't know where they are.

Again, how has that helped the OP?

How about the OP help herself by ringing the shop or the delivery service?
