Neighbours keeping hold of parcels

AIBU to think it’s a bit rude to hold onto your neighbours parcel when it has been incorrectly delivered to you?!

Royal Mail have delivered my parcel to someone else - all I’ve got to go on from the photo is a pair of feet. I’ve posted on our local FB page but no one has responded so I’ll be knocking on all the neighbours doors until I find it but I just find it so odd that people don’t drop it round ! I see so many people posting on FB asking if people recognise that door or those feet so I’m definitely not alone. I always drop parcels & post off if it’s not mine, surely it’s just a nice neighborly thing to do?!

Also just to add it’s taken me a while to find the tracking details but I can see it was delivered a week ago!

OP posts:

I take parcels in for neighbours but they do need to come and collect it. I wouldn't go to them after all I already did them a favour.

Lucienandjean · 10/07/2024 17:40

@Bluebirdover you seem weirdly overinvested in this but ok, maybe the OP has the only delivery photo ever taken that is literally nothing but socks.

I've found multiple neighbours and my parcels by recognising a doorstep or plant pot or whatever in the background, because I've used my initiative and gone and looked. But whatever. Not my parcel (not yours either) so not my problem. Bye 👋

ManchesterLu · 10/07/2024 17:42

Either a) they'll assume you got a note saying where it was and they're cursing you for not coming to pick it up.

or b) they get so many parcels they haven't even noticed it wasn't for them. We get LOADS of business parcels coming to us, which I only sort through once a week, so I wouldn't notice for quite a few days if we had something we shouldn't have.

But the OP clearly stated it was nothing but socks, so why did you make up a scenario that didn't happen GrinGrinGrinGrin

I think you're overly invested to the point you're making up your own narrative, which is just weird.

MeAgainAndAgain · 10/07/2024 17:44

If I wanted a job as a delivery driver/postman I would go and get a job as a delivery driver/postman.

OP, they very kindly took in your parcel. They are now waiting for you to collect it. The fact that you don’t know where it is has got absolutely nothing to do with them.

Where is your community spirit? Instead of whining on the internet about your kind neighbours why don’t you call whoever delivered your parcel incorrectly (by not telling you where it is) and go and fetch it? And then say ‘thank you for taking in my parcel’ 😊.

Hvjudefjhfdr · 10/07/2024 17:48

I used to take parcels wrongly delivered to me to the correct address, but I got sick of knocking doors and hearing the people home but they couldn’t be bothered to answer the door (I assume the reason the delivery driver couldn’t give it to the right person in the first place!), that now I always wait for them to come and get it themselves.

Obviously Mumsnetters who do t answer the door unless you've written to them to say you're popping over with their parcel, with at least 14 days notice!

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 10/07/2024 17:58

This happened to us last week. We were expecting a parcel to be delivered on Thursday and happened to check the tracking on Wednesday afternoon to see if there was a time for delivery.....only to discover it had been apparently been delivered on Tuesday morning! Photo of feet (no parcel) and a bit of scrubby grass (no front door!)

There were GPS coordinates that gave us an
idea of where it was delivered to and so we went off and called on our neighbours. They have a box outside for deliveries where our parcel has been put! They don't check the box unless they're expecting something, so they didn't know it was there.

Whilst I agree that neighbours who agree to take in a parcel that isn't theirs are to be thanked, if the delivery driver has just left a parcel at the wrong address, there's no note through your door as they think they've delivered to you!

Hope you find your parcel OP!

Oh that’s weird. So whose feet were they? Was it just a random photo that wasn’t taken at their house then?

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 10/07/2024 19:13

@MeAgainAndAgain

We assume the feet belonged to the postman/woman as they were wearing shorts and the scrubby grass was at the start of the neighbours drive, so they must have taken it prior to walking up the drive and putting it in the box!

Oh that’s bad. They could have just walked off with the parcel and neither you nor the neighbour would have known 😡.

Do people really prefer to have someone else's parcel cluttering up their hall rather than thinking "oh, maybe they didn't get a card..." and dropping it round? If it's not been delivered miles away it's hardly a huge chore.

My issue with this is how do I know whether they will be in , I could end up calling on them several times before I catch them

Tablesalt111 · 10/07/2024 21:58

Jegersur · 10/07/2024 16:31

It’s up to you to go and collect the parcel that someone else has kindly taken in for you.

How if you don't know where it is. Telekinsis?🤣

MeAgainAndAgain · 10/07/2024 22:02

Tablesalt111 · 10/07/2024 21:58

Well, like everyone on this thread has already said, take it up with whoever did not give you the details of where the parcel is, ie the delivery company. They will let you know, then you go and fetch it yourself.

I don’t think telekinesis is necessary really.

CandiedPrincess · 10/07/2024 22:40

@Tablesalt111 Ask your courier/delivery person.

CrushingOnRubies · 10/07/2024 23:08

It's all well and good knocking doors looking for a parcel. But recently, the photo of the parcel delivered to a neighbour looked like nowhere near I live. Turned out the parcel had been delivered to North Yorkshire I live in South west England.

Eventually got the parcel

Zita60 · 11/07/2024 05:38

TwinCheeks · 10/07/2024 17:16

The people it went to may be waiting for OP to come round. They dont know that the OP didnt get told where it was. But yeah theres loads of this on facebook, posted with a pic of someones slippers or dressing gown. Why dont royal mail record where it was dropped off!

Because if Royal Mail have delivered it to the wrong address, they think they’ve delivered it to the correct address so there’s no need to record where they dropped it off.

I had this happen to me recently. The Royal Mail website said the parcel had been delivered, and there was a photo of it sitting on the ground next to a dustbin. Except it wasn’t my dustbin. I went to look at my neighbours’ dustbins and eventually found it in the garden of the house next door. Several letters had been delivered to him in previous weeks - the house numbering in this street is a bit unusual and I think a new postman was assuming that the house next door was my number (it doesn’t have the house number prominently displayed). If my neighbour had found the parcel he would have brought it round to me, because he always brings misdelivered post to me.

If a postman or courier tries to hand me a neighbour’s parcel because they’re not in, then I know they’ll have a card and will come to collect it. Often I’ll take to them as soon as I can see they’re back home, just so it doesn’t clutter up my hall. But if I’m handed a parcel for a neighbour without being asked if I will accept it on their behalf, then I know it’s a mistake and I point out the mistake.

If I had a neighbour’s parcel and they hadn’t collected it after a week, I would definitely have taken to them, probably the same day.

Katemax82 · 11/07/2024 06:47

Ring your RM delivery office and explain. They can see on their system where the parcel was scanned for delivery so you will know where it is

Sondheimisademigod · 11/07/2024 06:54

SoupDragon · 10/07/2024 16:59

Where from? She clearly says that she doesn't know where it is.

So what? @Bride2Be25 just has to do a bit of legwork to find it.
Terribly entitled to think that a neighbour will spend their evening popping along the street to knock on the door of intended recipient, or staring out the window to see when they get home
It's a favour to take in a parcel. People should be grateful, not demanding personal deliveries from the person doing the favours

Sondheimisademigod · 11/07/2024 06:57

Bride2Be25 · 10/07/2024 16:29

@CandiedPrincess love the community spirit 😂

What you want is both a parcel delivered knowing you will not be there to recieve it, for someone else to mind it for you, then that person to watch for you coming home so they can drop what they are doing to hand deliver it to you.
You are v unreasonable
If i were your neighbour, I'd take in your parcel and go on holiday for a fortnight

urbanbuddha · 11/07/2024 06:57

Have to say when a parcel is wrongly delivered I don’t run around anywhere. Next time I go out I just pop a note through the letterbox - “We have your parcel” and our address.
Works fine.

Londonrach1 · 11/07/2024 06:58

People expect the person to collect. Yabu. Your problem is with the company who didn't give the tracking information not your kind neighbour who took it in.

Sondheimisademigod · 11/07/2024 06:59

Bride2Be25 · 10/07/2024 17:04

@Debinaround yes exactly that !! If I knew where it was I wouldn’t be sitting around waiting for them to come over, of course I would have gone to get it.

I just think it’s sad nowadays that there seems to be no neighborhood spirit anymore - when I was a kid everyone made far more effort with their neighbours and helped each other out.

And do you do this for your neighbours, given that your wfh?

Sondheimisademigod · 11/07/2024 07:00

Scaredycat259 · 10/07/2024 17:12

Perhaps all those jumping on OP should maybe think that Royal Mail have delivered to the wrong address and OP has no idea where to collect it from! However the person who has it has the address on the front of the parcel to be able to find OP. I've seen many posts recently on sm of people looking for incorrectly delivered parcels due to Royal mail.

Why is everyone assuming it's royal mail? It could be any one of the courier companies

Drivingnowhere · 11/07/2024 07:03

No, you go and collect a parcel if a neighbour has taken it in. If I've taken in a parcel then it's because the neighbour is not home, how on earth would I know when they're home? I'm not nipping over multiple times in the hope they're in, come get your parcel.
