To wish Sir Keir and his wife would not hold hands when working

BeaQuiet · 10/07/2024 10:23

They've arrived in Washington DC on official business clutching hands like the Macrons, the Obamas and the Sussexes.

AiBU to find it a bit cringey?

And before anyone asks, yes I do have bigger things to worry about but I fancy a chat.

I’d be more concerned if he starts holding Angela’s hand.

newnamethanks · 10/07/2024 17:26

O bloody hell, don't bring Angela into it, the thread will run for weeks.

I think I am losing the will to live here.

WRM was not a politician but a journalist and editor of the Times. The headline was defence of Mick Jagger and Keith Richard who were in the 1960s popular beat combo "The Rolling Stones".

I just find it interesting that he supported the musicians against the social mores of the time in arguably the establishment paper of the century. Especially given how little Jacob turned out.

Ok.

Were you offended?

It’s just a lighthearted thread

Lighhearted?! Well I'm sorry but I'm very offended! how very dare you say lighthearted when we are discussing the very vair serious topic of hand holding. I'm offended <did I mention that Grin>.

BeaQuiet · 10/07/2024 17:30

OP says she is a labour supporter from way back. Ok—what strange pathology and anxiety causes you to vote for a party, support its presumed goals, and then start a thread that deliberately holds the new representative of the party up for a wide range if contempt for a public act of such tiny significance? Even if you don’t like it what impels you to elevate a personal preference to a public beating? To me its like complaining that the Prime minister likes chocolate cake. So fucking what?

Oh dear god ... it's Wednesday but I think I'll have a G&T. Anyone care to join me? Drink of your choice and I won't compel anyone to drink alcohol ..

I'm more interested in his wife's skincare routine than whether she chooses to hold her husbands hand in public tbh......

DayIntarnishedarmour · 10/07/2024 17:31

Focus groups will probably have decided it’s good for the PMs/Labour Party’s image.

In a work setting I think it looks cringey and unprofessional for couples to be holding hands.

BeaQuiet · 10/07/2024 17:32

and you think it’s spending your entire day on tour thread whinging about holding hands as a good way to spend your time?

Hands @whichmag a stiff one ...

I don't see why she has to go with him on a work trip. I wonder if she's using all her nhs annual leave to do it..

It's unprofessional imo. He's working, not on holiday.

O h , we’ve reached the inevitable end of the cycle of bullying when the OP starts loftily asserting that it was just in fun and the rest of us are just such killjoys.

AceOfCups · 10/07/2024 17:33

I agree OP. It's really cringey and performative.

My theory is that the behaviour was popularised in America where "being the first lady" is a proper job unto itself.

Better make it a double for @whichmag. And a big bag of salt and vinegar ...

I guess it must be added to the Torygraph list of things that are totally unacceptable but only if labour politicians or public sector workers do it. Rishi has been filmed and photographed multiple times holding his wife's hand at official engagements (most recently as he walked off after his resignation speech) and not a peep by the Tory trolls about it being "cringey" then.

The desperation to find any angle of attack to try and downplay the thumping whipping the Tories have sustained is the only thing that is "cringey" around here.

I do have a point there.

I have no idea why I was deleted @BeaQuiet - but I obviously offended somebody!

@EasternStandard I wasn't offended - just thought it was a rather unpleasant thing to say about our new PM and his wife. Clearly lots of others were more offended than me though.

It may seem and/or be presented as a lighthearted thread, but there were some unpleasant assertions about KS and his wife/their relationship.

Salemforcuddles · 10/07/2024 17:41

They are maybe just that kind of couple, good for them

I couldn't be doing it all the time mind you, I need one hand for my pork scratchings and the other for my Gin

Somebody needs to tell Jill Biden that because she’s still doing her pre presidency job.

dottiehens · 10/07/2024 17:53

I wish KS would not said he supports Biden staying for the next elections. Why did he feel the need to comment on such a ridiculous situation. I thought he was more concerned with diplomacy than point scoring. Anyway, he took the knee so not surprised but come on.

newnamethanks · 10/07/2024 18:00

Not The Knee! All hope is lost, stone him and his hand-holding wife. Alternatively, go and get yourself a cup of tea. I'll drop the PM a note and ask him if he's got time to pop round and tell you how to do your job. He can leave Mrs S at home.

Edited

Saying he supports Biden staying on for the election is diplomacy, not point scoring.

Would it have been better if he'd said "better stand down old chap, you're not up to the job"?

dottiehens · 10/07/2024 18:20

I do not expect any politician from other countries to comment on this on a visit. He was not ask his opinion was he? Also, very telling on his views. It is basically elderly abuse the whole thing.
