How likely are PIP vouchers now labour are in?

CatOnALightSwitch · 10/07/2024 10:22

Just as the title says really.

It doesn't affect me as I don't claim any benefits and work full time however my son and mother are on PIP and I'm not sure how vouchers would work for them and I'm a little bit worried.

I know there is previous threads on this but I can't see any being mentioned now labour is in.

Is it worth worrying about or is it a wait and see what happens situation?

Thanks all.

Given the amount of changes to the system, it's going to be a long process if it ever happens

We're not talking about a minor change here

How do you no that for sure

Know what for sure? The PIP regulations are set out in law and cannot be changed without legislation going through Parliament.

So will this happen

LadyKenya · 18/07/2024 22:26

It is a bit like deja vu around here at the moment.

I doubt it very much. Going after disabled people in receipt of PIP does not seem to be on Labour's agenda as far as I can tell. There was nothing in the King's speech about PIP. I really would not be losing any sleep about it right now.

No, that is not what will happen on 22nd July. It is the closing date for consultation responses.

I think that the Country has had enough punishment, under the last Government!

It sounds like your anxiety about something that is probably never going to happen is having a detrimental impact and stopping you enjoying the good things in life.
Repeatedly reading and posting on threads about this is not doing you any good.

No one can answer that for you.
However, you can put your views across for the consultation about it. You have until 22nd July to do so.

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=6fbxllcQF0GsKIDN_ob4wy4AdhV04YtOnxNXoi82ciFUN00yS0lJSTgzOVNaUzI1TVpYRkZGN1RUQSQlQCN0PWcu

Maybe doing that will help you feel a bit more empowered about it all, as in you had a say about it.
That is all you can do for now.

And this is why I avoid the news - so much scaremongering about things that may not happen

Jess199512 · 21/07/2024 11:35

If it happened how long will It take to come in to place and I rly hope it don't

Pedestriancrossing · 21/07/2024 12:18

@Jess199512 no one knows if it will happen or how long it would take to bring in any changes. I know it's hard not to worry, but honestly there's no point dwelling on this at the moment. We will have to wait for the consultation to close and results looked at before any announcements can be made. I know many disability charities have responded to the consultation so I'm sure concerns about the workability, cost etc of any voucher scheme have been raised numerous times.

Try not to stress. Drastic changes to PIP would need primary legislation, which would need to go through Parliament and takes a long time.

I am 99% sure Labour won't go down the vouchers route. If it did there would be a huge backlash and they might very well struggle to get the legislation through Parliament. There would be legal challenges.

The Tories tried something similar but less draconian (disability aids instead of cash) a few years back and had to drop the proposals damn fast because of the backlash.

Jess199512 · 21/07/2024 13:37

Relly hope not coz like I said I'm struggling to sleep ATM coz I'm worried

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/07/2024 18:52

Honestly no ones going down the vouchers route - it would cost a fortune to administrate and create even more backlogs in a system already drowning in backlogs.

Jess, the consultation is closed. What happens next is that the government will at some point publish the outcome of the consultation. This will take months.

If changes to PIP are to be made it will take years for those changes to come into effect. And as everyone has said several times, it is almost certain vouchers are simply not going to happen. That was a bit of Tory nonsense that is now dead in the water.
