We've come to a pub for food after 5 year old daughter had a school movie night. She usually takes her socks and shoes off and took them off in school, white socks.

She's currently barefoot and wanted to get and walk over by the pool table. I told her to out her shoes and and hers dad is saying to let her just have her white socks on onna pub carpet because she wants the socks and not shoes.

I moaned about never getting them clean and he says they're already dirty from school. Apparently, there is something wrong with me.

AIBU?

Children should wear shoes when they're out.
You don't know what they might tread on.

Smithhy · 09/07/2024 18:48

The chances of a bit of broken glass in a pub is quite high.

FictionalCharacter · 09/07/2024 18:51

You're both unreasonable for not making her wear shoes and socks walking round a pub!

NotAlexa · 09/07/2024 18:52

Common sense - shoes when out of house, shoes protect from ER visits.

SwanRivers · 09/07/2024 18:52

Anywhere I've worked where public come in....bars/shops/museum/restaurants, the public have not been allowed to walk around barefoot incase they injure themselves and try to sue.

One pub landlord barred a bloke who refused to put his shoes on when he was playing snooker.

Weird really, because there was a nightclub upstairs and no-one ever made women on the dance floor put their shoes on if they'd taken them off.

Sorry, not helpful but there you go 😁

WindowViper · 09/07/2024 18:54

I wouldn’t worry about white socks - who will see the bottom of them anyway?

But yes, I agree with all the PPs that she needs shoes!

Thatsfrenchforstopahorse · 09/07/2024 18:55

Generally I’d say shoes should always been worn out and about.

But if she’s already got them off I’d make a decision whether it was the battle I chose to fight or just go with the flow, based on tiredness etc after a school day.

BodyKeepingScore · 09/07/2024 18:55

If she's not in a private home she should have her shoes and socks on. Especially in a pub.

bergamotorange · 09/07/2024 18:56

Doesn't matter about the dirt, the bottom of socks are not seen.

But I'd want shoes on for safety in a pub.

So you're both wrong!

Ilovebees · 09/07/2024 18:56

Who cares about the white socks , she’s a child , just buy new ones if they get dirty or just wash them . I’m sure they won’t get any dirtier than they already are after school . But yeah the shoes thing is a different story I agree , might have glass on the floor .

CollyBobble · 09/07/2024 19:01

Dreadfully low standards having your child wander around a pub in her socks. Why is she wandering around anyway? It's not a playground.

TheShellBeach · 09/07/2024 19:11

She shouldn't be wandering around anyway, OP.
Why isn't she sitting at the table?

BuyOrBake · 09/07/2024 19:26

The socks getting dirty isn't really the issue. Your child needs to wear shoes in a pub for safety reasons!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 09/07/2024 19:27

Wtf? Glass.

Epicaricacy · 09/07/2024 19:28

5 year old barefeet in a pub?

Just no. How can any idiot believe it would be safe? Let alone minging.

Iseeyoupekingduck · 09/07/2024 19:33

Why on earth would any of you let her walk barefoot on a pub where there maybe shards of glass?

WeeOrcadian · 09/07/2024 19:36

I never walked around barefoot in a pub and still managed to get glass in my foot

You're both VVU

LittleGreenDragons · 09/07/2024 19:38

She should always have shoes on outside the home. Broken glass and dog shit are the two main reasons. She also shouldn't be wandering around the pub by herself either.

TheChosenTwo · 09/07/2024 19:40

Well I wouldn’t give 2 hoots about white school socks getting grotty, they’re white school socks - I’m surprised they’re still white enough at this stage of the year that it’s so important to you, more important than her walking around barefoot and getting glass in her feet!
Shoes on in a pub. Not even up for discussion surely.

VivaLaSpag · 09/07/2024 19:42

This has got to be a reverse surely 😂 Nobody in their right mind would let a child just wander around in their socks like it’s their own living room. So bizarre!
