Makeup and Dress Code for the School Run: Necessary or Not? 💄👕👖

Just curious, and to be clear, I'm not judging anyone; I'm genuinely interested in why some moms choose this approach. Other than the moms who go straight to work or have appointments right after, do any of you bother with makeup and put effort into dressing up for the school run? Especially if you're just heading back home afterward? I always make sure I'm showered and dressed neatly each morning, but I don't see the point in applying makeup when it seems unnecessary. I usually wear leggings or jeans and a t-shirt, and I skip the makeup—I simply don't have the time. And you know, some moms show up at school in their PJs, some even in dressing gowns and slippers!

I haven’t worn makeup since high school twenty years ago, so no. 😂

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/07/2024 12:28

Not around here they don’t.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/07/2024 12:29

Does it matter?

Needmorelego · 09/07/2024 12:31

As said above...
Does it matter?
I really don't think out here in the actual real world anybody cares in the slightest what other parents are wearing.

Peonies12 · 09/07/2024 12:32

Why does it matter to you? Getting dressed and wearing make up makes me feel ready for the day, even if I'm not working or going out. Fine if you would rather not, I couldn't care less. Always love the more judgey posts start with 'I'm not judging...'

Tagyoureit · 09/07/2024 12:33

Why does it matter to you?
Why do you feel the need to judge another woman for wearing make up to do the school run?

Her make up probably makes her feel confident and put together.

Do you judge the dads for shaving in the mornings to do the school run too?

TheGoogleMum · 09/07/2024 12:34

I don't wear makeup if I'm going to work nevermind just doing the school run! I definitely don't dress up but i don't wear pyjamas

Topseyt123 · 09/07/2024 12:35

Showered and in clean clothes. Jeans and a t-shirt used to do me just fine. I've never worn makeup as I just can't be arsed with it.

There was no particular dress code as far as I was concerned.

Reugny · 09/07/2024 12:35

Why?

The dads who do the school run are in work clothes including clothes tradies wear, gym clothes and casual clothes, plus every now and then in pyjamas with a coat over them. Some of them look like they have just woken up or that they need to go to sleep.

So why should mums dress any differently? Especially as a lot of office workers do hybrid roles now.

Foxxo · 09/07/2024 12:36

i dont even get out the car.. i pull up, she gets out, i drive off.

I never bother doing more than just throwing on whatever.. i cba.

Singleandproud · 09/07/2024 12:36

I never wear makeup but would always be clean and tidy.

Perhaps those parents do t prioritise sleep the way I do, or have early risers and have been up since 6am. Or they just like it and it makes them feel put together.

Personally I wouldn't be stepping out the house in leggings or joggers as I see them as home clothes unless actively doing sport.

lattekim23 · 09/07/2024 12:37

As I said, I'm not judging—I'm simply curious and wanted to ask the question. I'm not suggesting that everyone should be doing a catwalk, but it would be sensible to wear something more appropriate than clothes that look like one has just rolled out of bed.

Luminousalumnus · 09/07/2024 12:38

Looking put together was never something I wanted to spend my precious time on before drop off. My goal was to get the lad inside with everything he needed for the day and washed and dressed.
My goal for myself was to not be wearing pyjamas! Everything else was a bonus.

Precipice · 09/07/2024 12:38

Make-up isn't necessary anywhere.*

*Except in front of some cameras, for which purpose it is also put on men.

Despair1 · 09/07/2024 12:40

Why does it matter? Each to their own. Wherever I am going in the morning ( school/work/wherever), I always wear make up/ It helps me feel ready for the day, I feel 'naked' without it. Equally so, I have friends and family members who never wear it. It's ALL OK
Also, you do seem to be judging!

Comedycook · 09/07/2024 12:40

Personally I find having a shower to be much more of a faff than slapping on some make up. I never shower before the school run...I do that once I'm home from it. Sometimes I wear make up, sometimes not...but that depends on how I feel and isn't anything to do with the school run

ShinyBandana · 09/07/2024 12:41

It really depends on what I am doing after the school run as to what I wear and whether there is make up applied. For about 3 years I walked the dog on the beach straight after drop off in the morning so I was in my wellies, Wooly hat, doggy coat, no make up obv. I might not have showered yet and my clothes may or may not have been clean, lol, as I’d do all that after the walk.

These days I might pick up if wfh and then I’ll only have make-up depending on the formality of the on-line meetings.

Needmorelego · 09/07/2024 12:46

@lattekim23 maybe some parents have just "rolled out of bed" due to medical/health reasons and the fact they have got the child into school is something to be celebrated.
If you know nothing about other people's lives you shouldn't be judging them.

Foxxo · 09/07/2024 12:49

When i did have to walk, i didn't bother then either. I just throw on something decent, usually leggings/tshirt and then go home and have a shower, get dressed properly..etc. They all get to see me more presentable at pick up instead.

It's not a catwalk, i don't care what people think.

atichoo · 09/07/2024 12:49

I just get ready for my day normally. So I shower, get dressed, dry my hair and put basic make up on before leaving the house. Same as at the weekends. Casual clothes as I WFH, jeans/trainers nothing overly stylish or put together!

I dress for the school run in the same way I dress if I was having a day where I weren't doing it. I'm clean, tidy and presentable but with no extra or special effort!

No one here turns up in pjs or similar, I have never ever seen a parent dressed like that at our school. Gym clothes, yes, but definitely not pjs. No one seems overly glam either. Everyone just looks very 'normal' where I am.

SnapdragonToadflax · 09/07/2024 12:51

What does it matter? I like wearing a bit of make up, I feel like I've properly got up and dressed and ready for the day. It takes five minutes.

Epicaricacy · 09/07/2024 12:51

PJs, completely inappropriate.
I feel sorry for kids from the households, you can imagine how little care they are given.

Bikini or underwear, not appropriate

Any other clothes? who cares. Do people also have a "supermarket dress code"? They need a job and a life frankly.

skippy67 · 09/07/2024 12:53

You absolutely are judging. Come on now...

sunshine2go · 09/07/2024 12:53

I wear make up every day if I'm stepping outside my door. It's just who I am. If that's not for you then fine. There isn't a dress code.

You are dressed reasonably and showered so that's great and perfectly acceptable.

Now those in PJ / dressing gowns..they should be fined. What kind of message are we sending to our kids - no pride, lazy, unorganised and no decency.

Caffeineneedednow · 09/07/2024 12:54

I don't wear make up except for special events so the school run definetly doesn't count

If wfh or not working probably leggings and a t-shirt
