Makeup and Dress Code for the School Run: Necessary or Not? 💄👕👖

Just curious, and to be clear, I'm not judging anyone; I'm genuinely interested in why some moms choose this approach. Other than the moms who go straight to work or have appointments right after, do any of you bother with makeup and put effort into dressing up for the school run? Especially if you're just heading back home afterward? I always make sure I'm showered and dressed neatly each morning, but I don't see the point in applying makeup when it seems unnecessary. I usually wear leggings or jeans and a t-shirt, and I skip the makeup—I simply don't have the time. And you know, some moms show up at school in their PJs, some even in dressing gowns and slippers!

I wear make up for the school run, work, dog walks, supermarket etc etc. I feel better with it.

Judge away.

I look thrown together most days and rarely wear make up. I don't really tend to notice what people are wearing. I'm more interested in faces: seeing whether people look tired, sad, stressed etc.
For my part, normally just jeans and a hoodie for the school run, or a tshirt in hotter weather.
Very occasionally, if my self-esteem could do with a boost, I might wear a skirt, but that's about as good as it gets.

Mumsnet is a wonderful community where we can express our views. I appreciate everyone’s comments. Although the debate was heated, on a brighter note, our thread has been featured in The Sun News. No thanks, my grandma was from Liverpool, she’d be turning in her grave if I clicked that link.

@DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby Clicking a link? Why not? You might even see your comment featured in an article. What’s with the beef against the Sun, anyway?

I’m definitely not as glamorous as some of the school mums, but I do shower, get dressed casually and apply make up. I wfh and am on camera on calls several times in the day, so that’s the main reason for make up otherwise I look like I have no features at all!

Each to their own in my opinion, I’m glad I’m at an age now where I couldn’t give a crap what others think of me.

Have you been living under a rock?

The Sun newspaper printed a load of shitty lies about Liverpool fans over the Hillsborough disaster!!

Lots of us on here just want to chat and discuss things with each other. We don’t want to have our comments published in a tabloid. It’s putting me right of mn tbh. In future, I’m going to report threads like this for not being a genuine poster.

Needmorelego · 11/07/2024 10:59

@CALO59 I don't know how/if Mumsnet can actually stop tabloids getting their stories from here.
While Mumsnet is essentially anonymous it's a public forum that can be accessed by anyone. I don't believe anyone owns the copyright on comments.
Perhaps if people didn't obsess over silly things such as what to wear for collecting children from school the tabloids wouldn't be interested in turning threads into articles.

They are allowed to use the comments. It’s in the t&cs. But MN can at least try to investigate if someone is not a genuine poster in good faith the same way they do for any other t roll. Personally, I think they should.
I don’t think any of the comments here show anyone being obsessive about anything tbf.

Needmorelego · 11/07/2024 11:23

@Youcannevertelltownfromtown true - I think worrying about whether the clothes you wear for collecting your children from school are "suitable" is probably not obsessive. It's just a little bit sad. No one should care what other people think about their clothes.
