Makeup and Dress Code for the School Run: Necessary or Not? 💄👕👖

Just curious, and to be clear, I'm not judging anyone; I'm genuinely interested in why some moms choose this approach. Other than the moms who go straight to work or have appointments right after, do any of you bother with makeup and put effort into dressing up for the school run? Especially if you're just heading back home afterward? I always make sure I'm showered and dressed neatly each morning, but I don't see the point in applying makeup when it seems unnecessary. I usually wear leggings or jeans and a t-shirt, and I skip the makeup—I simply don't have the time. And you know, some moms show up at school in their PJs, some even in dressing gowns and slippers!

For drop off in the morning I wear an oversized t shirt, hoodie/ jacket, leggings and trainers. I clean my face and put on some tinted moisturiser, comb brows through with pomade, eyeshadow stick, a dab of lipstick and do a quick messy bun.
At some stage between getting home and heading back up to pick dd up, I will probably touch up my makeup, add powder and mascara (or redo if I have a shower), fix my hair, put on jewellery and perfume, change into a long skirt (and tights if it’s cold)/ cardigan and maybe paint my nails. I don’t do any of it specifically for the school run. It’s just part of my routine.

These ones are a bit over the top though....

How about pyjamas like this?
(I wonder what colour they were)
😂😂😂😂

Judging by the shade of grey, I'm going to guess a warm colour, 😂

Needmorelego · 09/07/2024 16:10

Ok I'll stop now 😂😂😂😂

Forgot to say, no I don’t think it’s necessary to dress any particular way for the school run. I don’t think anyone really notices or cares.

😂I think you could have just came from the office in that ensemble.

Thierrymugler · 09/07/2024 16:17

No makeup in a morning. But clean clobber and showered. (Don’t ever go out without a shower)

I would then do my makeup for the afternoon school run. 😏😏

I love that house coat. I used to have something similar I got in a charity shop when I was younger and wore it as a dress. Not over the top for me!

DinnaeFashYersel · 09/07/2024 16:25

I've never seen a parent wear pjs to school.

I never wear make up ever.

Washed and dressed is all that is needed.

Jengnr · 09/07/2024 16:29

Sometimes I’m done up like a Barbie doll, sometimes I chuck a hoodie over my pyjama top. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

CelesteCunningham · 09/07/2024 16:31

Everyone just seems to dress for their day here - some wear more make up than others but that's the same when I run into them in the supermarket.

longdistanceclaraclara · 09/07/2024 16:42

I did the school run in my pyjamas this morning, mine are secondary now, and it was a last minute lift because another monsoon started as they were leaving for the bus and I don't actually have to get out of the car.

Primary days I wore whatever was appropriate for what I was going after drop off - office / gym / jeans and a t shirt.

Parents just wore normal clothes.

Getonwitit · 09/07/2024 16:45

Sheer bloody madness. Why do you care what others think of what you wear to drop your children off? Surely that was left behind when you left school ? As long as your clothes are clean and you aren't dressed like a hooker, what does it matter?

HideTheCroissants · 09/07/2024 16:47

I never wore makeup for the school run unless I was going out somewhere nice like meeting DH or a friend for lunch.

i was always washed and dressed though - usually jeans and t-shirt! I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere in PJs!

zingally · 09/07/2024 16:48

As I haven't worn make-up at all for at least 15 years, I'm not going to start just to appease the "mum crowd". My outfit is whatever I've chosen to wear that day!

earlymorningcurlewcall · 09/07/2024 17:12

It doesn't matter about make-up, but be presentable and throw on some actual clothes.

mondaytosunday · 09/07/2024 21:35

Most mums seem to dress as if they are about to head to the gym. Casual I'd say - no one showed up in jammies or a onesie but no one 'dressed' for the school run.

Needmorelego · 09/07/2024 22:13

Well this thread has made it into The Sun and one of my comments is there 😂
I actually feel quite excited by that 🤣

smellsfishy · 09/07/2024 22:20

Personally I like to at least put underwear on. My granny's voice rings in my ears if I contemplate going anywhere in PJs "but what would the drs think if you were in an accident?" Grin

I did have to drop DD at school at 1:30 am recently for a school trip. Only time I've done the school run in PJs under my coat. And no, I didn't get out of the car.

Ozanj · 09/07/2024 22:24

I have to start work before ds wakes - I have just enough time to get out of my pyjamas and comb / tie my hair in the morning and that delay often means I’m in the same state for pick up. I wish I had the time to get ready properly - I feel it’s made a lot of the other mums dismiss me - but I don’t have the time.

Cuppapuppa · 09/07/2024 22:25

Some people wear make up even if they are not leaving the house or seeing someone so I don’t think it’s unusual to wear it for a school run.

I know someone who plans her school run outfits which I do think is a bit odd but 🤷🏻‍♀️

SummerDays2020 · 09/07/2024 22:31

How do you know who is off to work, though? I mean apart from those in dressing gowns and slippers - which I've never seen!

catin8oots · 09/07/2024 22:34

I always did the school run in whatever was appropriate for the day ahead. As did most mums as far as a I remember.

If I was due in the office - office gear. If I was on way to gym - gym kit. If I was on way back from stables - smelly jodhs and wellies.

Now I don't have to do the school run and I work from home but if I did I would be doing it in leggings/trackies/dog walking stuff like most of the SAHMs and WFHMs I see on their way to the school at the end of my road every morning!

SuffolkUnicorn · 09/07/2024 22:41

I wear make up and dress like a rainbow or 1950s I don’t look at what every else is wearing I wear a dress with heels or a dress and converse
