AIBU to question why so many people set up Gofund me pages when someone dies?

I get it they died overseas with no insurance or if the family are broke and can't afford a funeral but what's with the raising tens of thousands for no hardship reasons?

Is this a peculiar trend?

I think there are 2 issues here. One the donation to charity in the deceased name. I work for a funeral director and we often have donations...in the past it was the done thing to send flowers. Now it's usually only the family and people give to charity. Some charities have special registers for this type of donation

The other issue is the cost of the funeral. Personally I get very annoyed when I hear for people who have gone on holiday and not brought even the most basic travel insurance. I'd never contribute to that type of case. However, I'm from a very working class background and know people who have died early and there is just no money for the funeral and moreover, there's no cash to keep the family going. These I have given to.

A direct to cremation funeral costs about £1500 locally. I always think if you don't have the money for a full blown funeral do this and hold a ceremony at a different time either in someone's house, a village hall etc where you can keep the costs down.

We had a situation where the family were arguing for months who was going to pay...on the day one of them who was adamant he wasn't going to part with a penny turned up in a new car...it was very interesting driving the family car behind the hearse!

There should be some sort of fund from the state.

There is everyone is poor. It used to be about £900, but it might have increased.

You don’t have to have a funeral. I’m not, neither is DH, nor are my parents. DS2 doesn’t want one either, but DDIL doesn’t agree with it. They’re a complete and utter waste of money imo. I don’t want to spend £6k for people to sit in a room while they cry over my coffin. I’d much sooner have a direct cremation and them spend the money on something fun.
