I have a feeling that every other grown up in our society received an email / text message on their nineteenth birthday telling them exactly how to find a bin bag that actually fits their kitchen bin.

Having bought a beautiful, basic swing bin from homebase (50l, rim 130cm, silver grey) I would love to be able to buy it a bin bag that goes over more than 3 of its corners.

I deliberately avoided buying the smart bins, the ones with sensors and what have you, knowing I could not cope with a bin smarter than myself. Having chosen a nice, simple bin I never realised how difficult it would be to find it the right bin bag.

Now I have various barely-used rolls of assorted-sized bin bags sitting forlornly in my under sink cupboard and I’m no closer to finding the right one for my bin.

If anyone can let me in to the secret(?) method of obtaining the correct size bin bag I would be supremely grateful.

IABU - why don’t you already know this you cretin???!

IANBU - totally understand your dilemma (or just have every sympathy for a dimwit)

You need to go over-sized - use an outside-type bin bag if necessary.

Black bin bags. I’ve never found a white one which fits mine properly. Over sized is fine!

Yep, basic black bin bags all the way.
They don't even show once the lid is on.

I just buy the biggest option with tie handles and it's generally ok

130cm? That's quite big! I think you may have to jump straight to binliner size.

No one told me the secret (or perhaps I was hungover and didn't answer the phone) so I have also had to trial and error it over the years.

I quite enjoy the minor triumph of wrestling a bag onto the bin that really didn't think it wanted to go. Gosh, I wonder what that says about my life.

Anyway, your new bin sounds nice, and various sizes of plastic bags always come in handy in the end.

For the first time I've bought an expensive bin. You actually buy liners with the name and capacity printed on them. It's possibly the best thing I've bought!

50L bin nags in Tesco with yellow edging.

Humdingerydoo · 08/07/2024 23:58

See, my solution was to buy a Brabantia bin because then they tell you exactly which hideously overpriced bin bags to buy.

Good luck, I feel like you might need it 😂

My bin is 45 litres so i buy the 50 litre bin bags which fit perfectly. You need the next size up (or just use the black bin liners).

I think the only ‘smart ‘ thing about smart bins is that the brand sells their own bin bags and the bins tells you which size to buy
