To be bored out of my brain whilst breast feeding

FreightTrain · 08/07/2024 19:09

Baby is 10 days old and I am bored stiff whilst breastfeeding her. There’s only so much scrolling on social media or the news that I can take and I’m not sure I have the headspace for a book right now.

I am desperate to do some housework, what a sad state of affairs 😂

Please share ideas for how I can keep myself occupied or at the very least tell me it gets easier.

It can be boring because it can total hours and hours but really itching to do housework is just a pointless task. Part of having a baby imo strips back some of the modern world and should force us to be slower and more present in our lives, which will only benefit your child as it grows.
You could listen to a podcast, watch a movie, watch the news etc there are all sorts of stimulating things you can do while BF.

SouthLondonMum22 · 08/07/2024 20:09

I don’t breastfeed but just watch TV etc when giving bottles.

TheSixQuarks · 08/07/2024 20:14

Passing Time in the Loo Volume 1 amzn.eu/d/05HfIArP

This book is brilliant for breastfeeding. Designed to read while on the loo obviously but works just as well for breastfeeding.

Kindle app on my phone and wish I'd just leaned in and watched far more box sets than I'd ever have time for now!

Echobelly · 08/07/2024 20:19

I empathise, when they are on the boob non stop it is very tiresome.

Highly recommend getting a Kindle as it makes it easy to read.

Personally I spent some of it watching a DVD set of Wagner's 'Ring' opera cycle, but that's probably not everyone's cup of tea! 😅

FusionChefGeoff · 08/07/2024 20:21

I watched Game of Thrones from start to finish

Busby88 · 08/07/2024 20:25

I’m not usually a TV person at all, love a book usually. But those early days were all about binging the trashiest tv I could fine. Enjoy, and congratulations

Noosnom · 08/07/2024 20:25

DD was born during the financial crisis. I read the business pages during night feeds when the world was quiet. I was almost ready to hit the ground running as a hedge fund manager by the end of it 😁.

Dyra · 08/07/2024 20:27

Another in the box set camp. I watched The Dragon Prince and Avatar series (along with others) on Netflix with my first. When my second came along my first was a toddler, so we watched CBeebies. I probably also played games on my phone.

DappledThings · 08/07/2024 20:29

You do what any sensible human being would do - you watch The West Wing from beginning to end
Exactly what I did. Think that was my 3rd go all the way through it

WeeOrcadian · 08/07/2024 20:36

Podcasts. I can recommend Toni & Ryan and Drunk Women Solving Crime

KatyButton · 08/07/2024 20:36

I used to enter competitions on the iPad whilst trying to keep awake all night feeding a newborn - I won all sorts!

Chickenuggetsticks · 08/07/2024 20:38

I watched a lot of tv, but I ended up quitting breastfeeding due to supply issues and once I fell asleep which scared the shit out of me.

GHSP · 08/07/2024 20:39

I used to read the Economist. DH thought I was being unreasonable to balance it on DS’s head but he didn’t seem to mind.

Choochoo21 · 08/07/2024 20:41

I watched the entire series of friends for the first time.

I then went onto other box sets - how often do you get to do nothing.

I also played PlayStation which was more fun that just watching.

And I did colouring/puzzles when I had them.

ThankGodForDancingFruit · 08/07/2024 20:42

I used to crochet over babies head! And watch a lot of box sets. I also started doing some online training seminars and listening to podcasts - all free.

I do understand how you feel though. Sometimes it’s tough feeling you are just sitting there, when the house is a state and you can’t relax.

Try and enjoy it. I would love to be able to crochet now (little hands everywhere) - and the house is even more of a state!

Tumbleweed101 · 08/07/2024 20:42

The first six weeks are the most intense and then it seems to get quicker - until they hit a dreaded growth spurt week!

Make the most of the slower pace. Make sure you are prepared with snacks and drinks. I had mine before the Internet took off so I did mostly spend it reading. I would definitely be picking a binge worthy series if I had a baby to feed now. Something like game of thrones should have enough episodes to keep you busy. One episode a feed lol.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 08/07/2024 20:43

I reread the Discworld series from the start. Pre streaming days so lots of DVDs and daytime Midsomer Murders and Lovejoy. Snoozing while feeding lying down. I resented it at the time but really wish I had ‘gone with the flow’ because this phase doesn’t last long really.

Starlightstarbright3 · 08/07/2024 20:45

I watched desperate housewives box sets .. shows how old Ds is ..

it was a 50 minute episode which fits with how long his feeds were

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/07/2024 20:45

Snacks, drinks, podcasts, Netflix, books, relax! I'm 20 months in and love the chance for a sit down

Thetroutofnocraic1 · 08/07/2024 20:46

It can be so tedious especially the nights which I found so lonely..mumsnet was a godsend on those lonely boring nights. During the day Netflix .. it’s hard to find the headspace for much else when you are tired. It seems slow at the time but goes by quickly. I was shocked at how much my ds needed to breastfeed at first , I was lucky to get a ten minute break! Luckily it does get easier and you will have more space between feeds as time goes on!

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 08/07/2024 20:46

Do you have something against TV, radio, music podcasts?

How is the only thing you can think of social media?

JudgeJ · 08/07/2024 20:47

Ponderingwindow · 08/07/2024 19:37

Imagine what it was like before the smartphone and streaming.

I did at least have a very good dvd library, but that requires planning.

I recall, back in 70s, we were living abroad and I used to listen to World Service, I became quite au fait with the Middle East football results in the morning. Other than that it was a cup of coffee and a book, long before the days of even videos!

bk1981 · 08/07/2024 20:47

I binge watched a load of Netflix/bought loads of baby stuff on Vinted but did get seriously bored. Baby is now eleven months and takes less than five minutes to feed 3x per day. I now miss the quiet time to watch TV/scroll my phone 😂.
