How many calories a day do you eat?

I'm 33 and average around 2050-2100, but I think it's too much.

I do an hour+ of exercise per day, but despite being 8 and a half stone I have a flabby belly and I'm bloated.

I've had 1800 ISH the past few days and feel a lot better for it, so I'll try and stick to this.

Bloating has nothing to do with calories. If you're bloated, it's decidedly likely you're eating something that is making you bloat. Maybe it would be worth your while tracking what you eat not only in terms of calories, but more importantly, what is making you bloat. It will also worth looking at FODMAPS as seemingly innocuous foods can cause digestion issues which result in bloating.

Also, are you chewing your food properly. Swallowing food that hasn't been chewed or even too much air can cause bloating.

Lastly, and as a PP mentions, menopause/perimenopause can cause issues with the gut and food intolerances which again cause bloating.

I'm 49, 5"6 and 60kg
I need to eat 1200max per day to lose .
I always get 10k steps in and exercise 4 times a week (cardio & strength)

Years ago I could eat what I liked and be 8 st

It's hard work for me to stay between 9-9.5 now

princesspadam · 09/07/2024 13:32

And I had a tummy tuck to get rid of belly flab as no exercise would've ever got rid of 3 pregnancy damage

1000 to maintain. I'm 5'4 and 47. 800 to lose weight.
It's incredibly annoying.

Same. I'm 5'2" and weigh around 54kg though. My BMR is very low.

Rosesandstars · 09/07/2024 13:39

You're under 9 stone. You're eating the right amount of calories for your body, unless you're under 4ft 10 tall or something!

1 hour of exercise a day requires some calories!

I'm a similar age, heavy and take in an lot of calories (which is hardly surprising!). I would love to be 8st 7!

JackieGoodman · 09/07/2024 13:40

OP is 5ft 7 and 8 and a half stone.
You do not need to reduce calories, seriously.

Jesus who has time for this? Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full and exercise. Life is too short to eat 1200 calories a day and you will make yourselves ill.

This.
I don’t count calories. I am active and eat to hunger. I keep a rough eye on protein to make sure I’m getting enough for my activity levels and stage of life.

I’m 5 foot 8 and around 9 stone.

Unless you really do sit on your arse all day then cutting calories to 1000 or less is ridiculous, unhealthy and will have the opposite effect you expect. You will impact your hormone balance and slow your metabolism. Then when you start eating normally again you’ll put on even more weight.

Just eat a healthy balanced diet with little to no UPF. Exercise enough with strength training at least twice a week. No need to calorie count - it also encourages disordered eating and food issues.

And exactly this.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 09/07/2024 13:50

5’ 4” somewhere between 61 - 62 kg.

1800 to maintain, 1600 to lose fat, 2000 to build muscle.

murmuration · 09/07/2024 14:02

Less than 1300 to lose, which I'm currently doing - usually around 1100-1200/day which gets me down 1lb every 2 weeks. It's slow going but I can't imagine trying to eat less! 1300-1400 to maintain. More than 1400 and I gain.

I'm flabbergasted by some of these numbers. I'd love to be able to eat 2000/day! Glad to see there are some others in my general range.

I wonder if some of it is genetic - my mother has always been overweight since I've known her and as far as I could tell eats barely anything. Like yoghurt for breakfast, a sandwhich for lunch, and soup for dinner. And she's not losing weight. Although this might be due to aging? I didn't pay attention to what she ate when she was my age.

Emmerald · 09/07/2024 14:05

Around 1800 per day to maintain. I'm 5'6" and 10st 5lbs. At one stage I was nudging 15 st!

Lost the weight by calorie counting (1200 per day) and going to the gym 3 x week to tone up. I still have days where I reduce my calories if I know I've overeaten a bit.

Danceinthenight · 09/07/2024 14:06

Women aren’t supposed to have flat stomachs because they have a womb and uterus

endofanera23 · 09/07/2024 14:16

Gladiator6789 · 08/07/2024 20:09

I'm 5'7, or just under. I do feel like it gets harder to eat as many with age, sadly.

I'm the same height, also in my 30s, a few years older than you, but about a stone heavier. My maintenance calories are about 1600 so I need to stick to 1100 if I wanted to lose 1 pound a week but I just can't, I'm hungry even at 1600 calories! So if I manage to keep it to 1500 plus increase exercise a bit then I lose about 1 pound a month. It's hard and depressing and definitely harder than it used to be. I've got a stone to lose and due to illness and injury recently I haven't been able to exercise so it looks like it'll take me well over a year to get there.

user1471556642 · 09/07/2024 14:28

5’4’’, 47 and average 1800 per day over the week. Am losing 0.5-1kg a week at the moment

TheDogsAreInThePool · 09/07/2024 14:45

Between 1800 and 2500 calories a day depending on what I'm doing and how hungry I feel.

I'm 5'6 and around 9.5 stone. I run at least 3 times a week and do weights, swimming and occasional yoga.

I rarely eat unhealthy food though as I'm 45, peri menopausal and if I eat crap I feel rubbish. I also can't drink alcohol since hitting peri menopause.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/07/2024 14:54

According to my garmin I've averaged 2400 calories burnt over the last 7 days and I'm not loosing or gaining weight so i must be consuming about similar.

ohthejoys21 · 09/07/2024 17:09

I'm in my 50's and find it so hard now to lose. I've had so many false starts that I've gone drastic this time and have only been having one meal a day for 2 weeks. I'm 5'5 and have lost 8lbs so am now 8.8 stone. Another 5 lbs to go and then I can afford to put on a bit on holiday.

ohthejoys21 · 09/07/2024 17:09

The one meal is probably around 900 calories.

ohthejoys21 · 09/07/2024 17:10

Sorry I meant 800!

KevinDeBrioche · 09/07/2024 17:11

I have no idea and find any chat around it beyond boring. Luckily it’s never a topic of conversation except in the hairdressers when I stay quiet and open my book.

Gowlett · 09/07/2024 17:19

1800 on an average day.

JohnTheRevelator · 09/07/2024 17:48

1800 to maintain my weight,1300 maximum to lose weight.

You know those are two words for the same thing, right? And it's very tiny when there isn't a baby in it.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 10/07/2024 20:46

5' 9" and my TDEE - 500 = 1600

I aim for that Mon-Fri then eat approx. 2000 Sat-Sun and I maintain.

I gym 4-5 x week using heavy weights (1 x PT)

I'm happy with my muscle tone but my weight is heavier.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 10/07/2024 20:47

@KevinDeBrioche why bother with this thread then?
