to be fed up of anti-aging skincare grifters on social media?

I enjoy skincare and have followed some skincare people on instagram in the past and as a result I do get skincare people in my feed which is fine. However currently it feels like everyone and their dog is trying to sell a skincare course or facial exercise marathon etc. The post photos of themselves x amount of years ago with obvious lines, wrinkles and facial ageing then they show themselves today proudly stating "no filter" as they point to their tight jawline and smooth skin except in many cases it is obvious they are indeed using a filter. Others show a dry wrinkled skin and then another photo of them with a ton of moisturiser on as an after shot to entice women to send money to get her pdf to age backwards when she has just stuck a moisturiser on and so much of it that it is softening her lines. Then of course there are the ones with obvious filler, Botox and surgery. Why do they do it, do they think we are stupid? It is all totally unregulated and there seem to be new grifters popping up every week to cream off more and more money from people why they can get away with it.

I've an attached a screen grab from the women who claims "no filter" and you can clearly see she is using a filter.

Looks filtered.

US2gether · 08/07/2024 17:14

I think just don't send them money

It definitely is but she always claims that it isn't, she must think we are stupid!

@US2gether I don't but lots of women do and its just disgusting to see them being ripped off by women who probably know only too well how much they are exploiting women's fears and insecurities.

Looks like she's done everything, fillers, botox, face-lift, "natural" makeup.

How old is she saying she is?

Are they any worse than the beauty industry though?

I don’t spend money on skincare at all: I think it’s all total snake oil but I don’t see why people doing it on social media are any worse than the big corporations? If you are stupid enough to buy into it the output is the same surely?

nommom · 08/07/2024 17:36

@Itiswhysofew She says she is 52.

Some skincare is scientifically proven to work such as daily use of SPF and regular long term use of tretinoin. I use both of those and my skin is excellent however I don't waste money on fancy expensive face creams with tiny bits of botanical extracts in.

I think in some ways it is worse because people see them as real women, perhaps their age with the same skincare concerns and they claim to have found an answer and use modern trickery to fake their results so women will hand over their cash. At least a brand like L'Oréal will get a fine and have to withdraw adverting and claims if they are found to be hyped up.

52 my arse but anyone who is stupider enough to send money gets what they deserve.

Opinionwontchangeluv · 08/07/2024 18:21

At night just use retinol serum and either coconut oil on top or glycerine, you can get both on Amazon.
In the day use a toner (you have to try a few to find the right one for you) vic c serum and a face cream.
Forget all these "beauty gurus " they are so annoying

Is tretinoin for acne or for anyone?

MadameMassiveSalad · 08/07/2024 19:47

Factor 50 is the only thing that helps.

It's prescribed for acne, but lots of people use it for anti aging, if you can get hold of it. I believe it's prescription only.

PostItInABook · 08/07/2024 19:50

Critical thinking skills evade so many women unfortunately.

I started using it for acne in my teens and I just kept using it I'm not 46 and my skin is good for my age, also had to use spf 50 daily as tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight so the combo of both has been good.

Of course it's a filter you can't see a single pore on her face. Everyone is trying to flog you something online these days, the influencer culture is so depressing. I tend to stay on instagram because it's all fake.
