Why is McDonald's so popular?

EvaHara · 07/07/2024 14:24

Not really an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

A new McDonald's is opening in my town centre and there are so many posts about it on local social media. The majority of people are delighted about it and as is often the case, shouting down those who are not and who have concerns about the increase in traffic, parking, rubbish etc in an already busy area.

There are lots of people already milling about outside it, looking in the windows, and it hasn't even opened yet. Will probably get shot down for saying this but said people were very overweight or obese, and in ubiquitous leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

Why do so many people want to eat McDonald's so often?

What is the obsession with it and other fast food?

IMO it's ok as an occasional treat, but surely not every day or thereabouts?

It’s consistent. I know there are local variations to the menu but no matter what country you are in a Big Mac is going to taste the same. It also is cheap and has a good reputation regarding hygiene.

I dunno, American McDonald’s is pretty disgusting! Australian Maccas is far superior to the UK too.

Well Morgan Spurlock did! 😔

Morgan Spurlock was an alcoholic, having had alcohol issues since he was 13 and was near constantly drunk during the making of Supersize Me which wasn’t mentioned in the film but he confessed to it years later.

Sorry to everyone who likes the stuff, but you could not pay me enough to eat one. I'd rather go hungry.

The Netherlands McDs was pretty decent when we went a few years ago. Lovely mint tea with fresh mint leaves, battered king prawns, skin on wedges and fresh salad. I was quite impressed - horrible fake chicken for the veggie choice though.

Because they put crack cocaine in their burgers to make them SO addictive. 😂 Also, because they are shit hot on their hygiene. I don't think I've ever seen a McDonald's that's not rated a '5' for their 'Score on the door'. At the age of 60,I've had my share of takeaways over the years, and whereas I can say I have occasionally had an upset stomach (and on one awful occasion, salmonella poisoning) from takeaway food,I can honestly say I have never ever been ill after eating a McDonald's.

Tbf this is a pretty low bar.

Papyrophile · 07/07/2024 18:13

I should add that I don't really eat any meat from choice if there's an alternative. I'm not vegetarian, but I eat meat only from known butchers and butchers that post the traceability of their meat back to the farm.

I’ve been to several mc Donald’s in Asia , Africa and Europe and I always just order a cheeseburger. It’s tasted the same everywhere more or less. Never tried American mc Donald’s but I wouldn’t be surprised

Why do so many people want to eat McDonald's so often?

How do you know what % of the people you saw are "regular" diners and and what % were there for their once in a blue moon visit? Simply, you don't.

Also, over two thirds of the population are obese so you're going to see obese people in almost every environment.

Fudgetheparrot · 07/07/2024 18:48

It tastes nice? Obviously not to everyone’s taste but clearly lots of people (me included). One near us also has a free play area so it’s actually a fairly bargain way to get lunch + a couple of hours entertainment for the kids

newmyname · 07/07/2024 18:52

I don't get why you can't wear sports clothes just going to the shops

The best thing I've ever eaten was a McPlant after a 12 hour fast

I'm not a journalist.

Well I wonder if you have an eating disorder, because people with eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia are often obsessed with overweight and obese people and fixate on it as a topic.

Disturbia81 · 07/07/2024 19:24

@SoreAndTired1 I didn't know that, I thought they'd all want to avoid the topic. Interesting

Pickingmyselfup · 07/07/2024 20:02

I love a McDonald's, either a quarter pounder with cheese meal or a double depending on how much I want to eat. Double sausage and egg mcmuffin for breakfast always and I do like the cheese melt things and the chicken nuggets.

Haven't had one in a while though because although I'm not overweight I have some I want to lose. I'm planning on having one after my half marathon in a few month's, I will definitely have earnt one and the lure of that might just help me push through.

Kids had one last week, we had a long drive so it was an easy stop so they could eat on the way. They probably have one too often but they are very difficult to feed and sometimes I can't be bothered to cook so it's a win win situation.

I have definitely been into McDonald's wearing leggings/tracksuit bottoms because that's pretty much all I ever wear unless I'm at work or making myself look presentable.

As for the mental queues after lockdown, I was one of them! Not so much because of the McDonald's but because the choice had been taken away from me previously which made me want one more and because there wasn't much else to do. I also stood in a huge queue for IKEA because I just wanted to get out and do something.

It's very cheap isn't it?

I used to eat the cheeseburger happy meal and that was an entire dinner for me 99p!

I do remember taking my DS to McDonald's a few times when he was little and I needed to get out of the house. I think a happy meal was about £2 and I got a coffee for a pound. There was colouring and balloons and a toy. I ate his leftovers!

MadameMassiveSalad · 07/07/2024 20:25

I think thr sheer number of folks in this thread alone who don’t eat it regularly proves it isn’t addictive, I don’t think I agree it’s crap either.

why is the company “disgusting”

Genuinely does 12 hours even count as a fast?

Est1990 · 07/07/2024 21:36

Because it's fast, fairly cheap and tasty.

While cooking from scratch and having a healthy diet is more time consuming.

You need more discipline to eat well than to eat fast food.

Haha, that's what I thought. It's like having dinner at 8pm and breakfast at 8am. Perfectly normal.
