Why is McDonald's so popular?

EvaHara · 07/07/2024 14:24

Not really an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

A new McDonald's is opening in my town centre and there are so many posts about it on local social media. The majority of people are delighted about it and as is often the case, shouting down those who are not and who have concerns about the increase in traffic, parking, rubbish etc in an already busy area.

There are lots of people already milling about outside it, looking in the windows, and it hasn't even opened yet. Will probably get shot down for saying this but said people were very overweight or obese, and in ubiquitous leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

Why do so many people want to eat McDonald's so often?

What is the obsession with it and other fast food?

IMO it's ok as an occasional treat, but surely not every day or thereabouts?

Why would these 'overweight' people just be milling about outside?

Because they’re unemployed and have just come out of the Chock-a-Block-a-Bargains shop with their cheap fags and whisky, bought from dole money.

MoodEnhancer · 07/07/2024 16:11

Because it’s pretty cheap and tasty? Don’t think anyone eats it everyday.

I think the bigger mystery is why you care so much about other people liking it that you have posted about it.

I don't understand the appeal.

I tried McDonalds once, back in the 80s.
The burger didn't taste like it had any meat content, so I didn't finish it and I've never been back.

Some people might like it, but it's not popular with everyone.

To be fair to McDonalds, I don't buy or generally eat that sort of food anyway.

TBF you may need to try it again.

People get very sniffy about McDonalds but it is freshly made good honest food for a good honest price.

It’s because all of us ‘millennials’ went through the absolute trauma of being told ‘we’ve got chips in the freezer at home’ 😥we have our own bank accounts now and do it just to feed our rebellious inner children.

I was 16yrs old when a MccyD's opened near to us and I can remember the excitement. (And the fear from some about traffic/rubbish/teens hanging around - in fairness there were issues).

There was no take-ways near us except Fish'n'chip shops so this was a totally new experience. It was full of OAP's in the daytime trying out fries and big Mac's.

I don't frequent often but sometimes that McChicken sandwich calls me.My SEND child like the predictability of it. My DP sneaks in a few breakfasts from there when he is travelling.

I don't like this ordering system on the screen boards. Seems to take ages to get the order now.

Realised I have never had a breakfast - on my bucket list to have a MccyD's breakfast.

RabbitsRock · 07/07/2024 16:15

I wouldn’t say it was a cheap option anymore. Much prefer BK burgers & fries. Maccie’s fries are like eating cardboard.

It is probably one of the most convenient fast food resturants. It’s absolutely everywhere, you can drive through so it’s east when you are en route.

Psychologically it is linked to most of our childhoods no matter where you are across the world.

Also nothing tastes like a McDs.

I am not a fan - LOVED. it as a kid, the toys, the bday parties we had, the experience- as a grown up everything tastes awful and doesn’t fill me up! But I have come to terms with McDs intelligent marketing aka being absolutely everywhere.

WindsurfingDreams · 07/07/2024 16:16

I don't know but people have lost their minds about the new one in the town nearest us. Long queues all the time and it's been open several months now.

We use it sometimes when travelling as it works ok for the children's allergies (never found a packaged sandwich they can have) but otherwise I can't see the appeal

Oh and the 80s was 40 years ago.

No business survives that long without doing something right.

Check it out.

WindsurfingDreams · 07/07/2024 16:16

Although when I was pregnant I had severe morning sickness but would get intermittent McDonald's cravings for some reason!

FinalCeleryScheme · 07/07/2024 16:02

That happened in Hampstead. The ‘liberal’ ‘progressive’ residents went ballistic about plebby McDs moving in. They lost in the end but the store has to have a green front FFS!

Hilarious. Imagine the outrage. I like their fries. Unfortunately, the one closest to me has terrible access. It probably is a good thing for my diet to be honest! Fries and McChicken = comfort food.

I don’t think it’s as cheap as everyone else seems to!

@AngryBird6122

Name somewhere cheaper

Not sure I agree with this, it doesn’t link to my child hood and I don’t think it taste “awful” either, huge selection. Not something I eat more than once or twice a year but it isn’t awful

ThePure · 07/07/2024 16:18

Cheap, convenient, predictable, kid friendly I get all these reasons

But tasty? I will admit I am not a massive fan of burgers at the best of times but if I am going to eat a burger then I want it really juicy, charred on the outside with generous fillings not some anaemic cardboard tasting thing.

For me McDonalds is not worth the calories and if I am going to have a burger as a treat I would go somewhere like this

SalviaDivinorum · 07/07/2024 16:18

I don't get it either.

I remember the excitement when the first ones opened in the UK when I was a child. I queued and bought a "Big Mac". I was so disappointed. The sad floppy thing I was given didn't look a bit like the adverts had promised.

Never bothered since.

I really doubt a journo would be posting about fat people in leggings staring through the window. Confused

It's very cheap isn't it?

I used to eat the cheeseburger happy meal and that was an entire dinner for me 99p!

JustSaltPlease · 07/07/2024 16:24

Mcdonalds is prob my least favourite fast food. I prefer burger king or kfc. But I see the appeal.

It's cheap, convenient and a nice treat for my son on the occasional Friday.

Each to their own
