Why is McDonald's so popular?

EvaHara · 07/07/2024 14:24

Not really an AIBU but posting here for traffic.

A new McDonald's is opening in my town centre and there are so many posts about it on local social media. The majority of people are delighted about it and as is often the case, shouting down those who are not and who have concerns about the increase in traffic, parking, rubbish etc in an already busy area.

There are lots of people already milling about outside it, looking in the windows, and it hasn't even opened yet. Will probably get shot down for saying this but said people were very overweight or obese, and in ubiquitous leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

Why do so many people want to eat McDonald's so often?

What is the obsession with it and other fast food?

IMO it's ok as an occasional treat, but surely not every day or thereabouts?

OP posts:

If you have any ND in your family then McDs is a godsend. It tastes and feels the same everywhere so is quite often as safe food for that reason.

This! You know exactly what you are getting, whether you go in a McDs in Brighton,or one in Carlisle.

🙄

What a delightful, snobby, judgemental comment.

I am sure you cook absolutely EVERYTHING from scratch!

Probably have your own cows and pigs too and slaughter them to get your own meat when you're ready for some beef or pork.

Edited

It’s actually the opposite of snobby and judgemental?! It’s not people’s fault. There’s so much science behind it now. It’s snobby and judgemental to say “oi look at the fatties gazing through the windows chomping at the bit for the new maccers to open”. Not snobby or judgemental to acknowledge that we are
living in a world where we are now genetically predisposed (through epigenetics as well as environmental factors) to crave those foods.

oakleaffy · 07/07/2024 17:14

McDonalds is so artificial -It doesn't stop hunger, either. It's so peculiarly textured.

JohnTheRevelator · 07/07/2024 17:15

As an aside, did you know that there are only TWO McDonald's on the whole of the Isle of Wight? And even more bizarrely,no Gregg's at all? totally misses point of thread

I really don't understand why you'd go on holiday to another country and have a MacDonalds. Surely going abroad is a lot about having cultural experiences including the food? I can't imagine going to a McDonalds in France or Italy or Japan. I would want to be making the most of the amazing food cultures that those countries have.

The sameness and predictability that lots of people seem to think is a plus point is a huge minus for me. I want food to taste like where it's from and not all the same all the time.

Anyway this clearly is a minority viewpoint given its worldwide popularity.

And I once had pretty terrible food poisoning from some (very tasty) Ceviche in South America so I guess that's the risk you take if you insist on sampling local cuisine.

Oh unclench....there is nothing wrong with grabbing a mcdonalds abroad it doesn't mean you don't also enjoy local foods !!

Mrsdyna · 07/07/2024 16:45

Think about how fast food keeps itself fashionable.
It's interesting to note that many now even associate their cultural identity with Greggs.
It is genius marketing.

Did someone say ''Greggs?''
This dog LOVES Greggs hot chicken 'Goujons' to take away!

Why is McDonald's so popular?
PaintingErica · 07/07/2024 17:20

What kind of town do you live in that a McDonald’s causes a buzz? 😂😂 and that people are looking in through the window? And that the OP has nothing better to do than hang around there.

Ill never understand how people can’t just accept that just because they don’t like something it doesn’t mean other people can’t.

Gemzee · 07/07/2024 17:20

Disturbia81 · 07/07/2024 15:48

So you do like it 😂

Yep .. when hungover 😁

PTSDBarbiegirl · 07/07/2024 17:21

Addictive ingredients & extremely clever marketing (social conditioning). Same as the poisonous brown sugar water that rules the world!

Was just coming on to add this comment, both of my ND children enjoy it and eat what they order which is rare. I feel relief to see them eating easily with no hassle.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 07/07/2024 17:22

It's very cheap and the fries are good!

headstone · 07/07/2024 17:23

Mcdonalds gets people when they are young. I always associated it with my childhood and happy times. Used to go often now not at all.

The fries really are lovely.

''Chip shop chips'' are too greasy and flabby.

kitsuneghost · 07/07/2024 17:27

They have a weird tansfixing voodoo radio waves that brainwashes people. I hate McDonald's but very occasionally just fancy one (why?!?) I take 2 bites and bin it cause I remember how disgusting it is.
But what compells me to decide randomly I want this shite?

Floorbard · 07/07/2024 17:28

SNMummy2024 · 07/07/2024 15:20

Because they are disgusting and are inflicting it on their children.

I think it’s disgusting to judge other people’s bodies, and I hope you’re not teaching your children to do that if you have any. Juvenile bully behaviour.

chaosmaker · 07/07/2024 17:31

It's minging @EvaHara and the litter generated is really bad. Have found this with most fast food places.

TiddlyCove · 07/07/2024 17:31

I think it's popular because people know what they're getting and the offering is the same wherever you go.

Brawcolli · 07/07/2024 17:36

It’s fast food, people enjoy it, very easy to understand.

What’s your obsession with what people are looking at and wearing?

RamonaRamirez · 07/07/2024 17:37

I’ve just been to McD 😁

had to skip lunch, so was hungry at 3pm, it was cheap, predictable, and ok-ish. If the fries are hot and salty it’s a treat even. If the milkshake machine works too, it’s almost exciting 😄

and all for £6.99

it’s not all about addiction, sometimes it just ticks all the boxes

As a PP said, unclench.

I’ve been to a McDonalds abroad, more out of interest as anything else, as it was a country that doesn’t generally serve beef. I was intrigued to see what they sold as an alternative.

It doesn’t mean I spent the other three weeks of my travels only eating food I could get back home Hmm

I go on holiday and eat whatever cuisine I fancy
The exact same as I do in UK.
Are you one of these people that stick rigidly to the cuisine of the country you are in.
Do you stick to roast fingers snd fish snd chips in the UK.
Do you reserve burgers for USA.

We have fast food in many countries because we have plans that mean we don't have time for a full sit down restaurant.

MorvernBlack · 07/07/2024 17:47

People like to demonise these things. But it's cheap, quick, consistent and not going to do any harm in moderation. The meat is British and the UK branches don't use a lot of the crap that is present in US McDs.

I also don't think people realise how crap a lot of the food Is in places like Tescos. Tescos use mainly chicken from Thailand in most of their ready meals (apart from Finest). I'd take a British Chicken Select (unprocessed breast) from McDs before I'd eat chicken from Thailand. A lot of chicken used by other takeaways is also imported from Asia and farmed in appalling conditions (I temp in a wholesaler).

I love Macdonalds. I always have and my dad does too.
On a Friday my daughter and I have a Macdonalds breakfast muffin together on our way to work before she goes on one tube and me a different one. It's something we adore doing once a week - brings a lot of joy that ten minutes with my adult dd. For that alone I'll love Macdonalds

The standard is the same and you never get food poisoning

Well that's me sold! 😂

Yeah that's a really high bar isn't it? 😅. It's popular because you don't die after you eat it.
