To hate Sweet Caroline

It used to be a good song but it's been so overplayed it's become unbearable. And with the extra "So Good" x 3 that seems to have become an official part of the lyrics over the years makes me want to tear my ears off.

@keffie12 came on to say the same!! Does give me goosebumps at VP though!

How good was Konsa tonight!

TheDogsMother · 06/07/2024 21:45

I absolutely hate it. How has it been one a thing for football and even for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee ?

Clarinet1 · 06/07/2024 21:47

Funnily enough I was asking a Caroline I know about this just tonight and she said she loves the song!

Neil Diamond must be both gutted and pleased simultaneously. I mean, they have ruined what was a great song, but royalties...

Yes, they should use ‘Send in the Clowns’ or ‘Being Alive’.😀

Whenwillitgetwarm · 06/07/2024 21:49

I thought it was a shit song long before football fans co-opted it.

Haveanaiceday · 06/07/2024 21:52

I like Neil Diamond but also don't understand why this would be chosen as an English football anthem. Neil is American and it seems to have no link at all to football.

Harrietsgirl · 06/07/2024 21:55

Traditionally sung at the Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park for best part of 30 years ...... now suddenly the go to song any sporting event .... God knows why!!

When people do the ‘so good, so good, so good’ bit, it makes me feel quite stabby because it doesn’t fit the arrangement of the song at all imho. Neil Diamond would be turning in his grave - if he were actually dead. Grin

I like Vindaloo though TBF.

I love Vindaloo! Especially the music video, which makes me so nostalgic for the days of Cool Britannia - not that much of it was cool as such, but there was a verve and optimism that we don't have any more.

Sweet Caroline can get in the bin though. I can't remember a time when I wasn't sick of hearing it.

CyanideShake · 06/07/2024 22:00

It was an anthem for the Northern Irish fans originally. Now been pinched by England.

But yes, an awful song. Nearly as bad as Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader. But not quite.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 06/07/2024 22:03

I miss 3 Lions

wheeltrims · 06/07/2024 22:06

I absolutely hate it too it makes me cringe every time I hear it.

Was on radio 2 today. Do they put the kettle on?! Great tune

Ooooh I love it it's so good, so good, so good

LlynTegid · 06/07/2024 22:11

Like the song, just not one for an English football team, nor for the Lib Dems to dance to either.

mewkins · 06/07/2024 22:13

xxFairyNuffxx · 06/07/2024 21:26

I don't mind the song, but I have no idea how it became a football anthem.

I mean, who started it? Who decided that a 50 year old Neil Diamond song that has nothing to do with football would make the perfect England footie anthem?

My thoughts too. I love Neil Diamond and kind of feel bad that his song has become this 😁 He's probably quite happy to coin in the royalties though.

HighOnMaiden · 06/07/2024 17:11

Despise it. And can only hear this...

@HighOnMaiden

ive never seen that before, I fear you may have forever ruined the song for me!🤪

but as you don't like Meatloaf either...

I think it's best we don't discuss music 🤣🤣

Ed Davey looked so 'normal' and so happy singing along & Dad dancing.

WhitegreeNcandle · 06/07/2024 22:16

My daughter has been learning it on the cello. It makes me want to stab my kitchen worktop in time to the “so good” x 3 bit every time she does it. Which is a lot because she loves the song. Like nothing else she’s ever practiced!

petermaddog · 06/07/2024 22:21

“Sweet Caroline” was inspired by a photograph of the then-9-year-old Caroline Kennedy. The lyrics were written a few years later about Diamond’s then-wife Marsha.
In 1969, the song peaked at #4 in the US and #3 in Canada. Two years later, it reached the top 40 in three European countries including a #8 peak in the UK.
Playing “Sweet Caroline” in the middle of the eighth inning at Boston Red Sox home games has become a tradition, especially the chorus to which many in attendance sing along. It began when the Fenway Park music director at the time Amy Toobey began playing the song over the loudspeakers in 1998. The tradition was continued by her replacement Megan Kaiser. From NPR:
I spoke to a woman named Amy Toobey, who had been the music director before Megan Kaiser. It was Amy who started playing “Sweet Caroline.” The reason: She just liked the song. That’s it.
“Sweet Caroline” was also used as the theme song for the short-lived daytime variety show The Caroline Rhea Show (which replaced the long-running The Rosie O'Donnell Show).
Neil Diamond always dreamed of performing the song for Caroline, which he did on her

Neil Diamond reveals secret of Sweet Caroline

To fans across the world, it is one of the emblematic songs of the 60s, a rousing, catchy love song to a girl known simply as Sweet Caroline

I am a Brit living in the US and we have been wondering all through the Euros why England are singing Sweet Caroline! It's like the epitome of an American song to me.

curveofcarus · 06/07/2024 22:29

I love that song. I saw Neil Diamond sing it live at the NEC.

StaunchMomma · 06/07/2024 22:32

Defo over played BUT we add a little bit at my club to abuse the rivals and that makes it more fun.

We always turn it up when played at England games and put our ears to the tv to see if we can pick up any pockets of fans singing the Villa version 😁
