To expect pet friendly to mean a dog can go everywhere

We arrived yesterday in a holiday house for a family trip that was booked because the place described itself as pet friendly. On arrival though we were presented with very intense written rules regarding dogs - they were in bold and used terms like ‘under absolutely no circumstances with no exception can your dog…’

If we had been told these rules in advance we would never have paid to stay here as they absolutely won’t work for our dog and we know that. The main rule causing issue is that he’s only actually allowed in the living room and part of the hall so 75% of the house is off limits including the stairs. He’s well behaved and good natured and is a breed that doesn’t shed hair. But he’s a clingy breed and follows us around and always sleeps on the floor by our bed otherwise he gets very distressed.

The owners know a dog was coming because we told them and we paid an extra £50. But none of these rules were mentioned. If he caused damage then of course I would pay (as I would if it was caused by a child or adult) but this seems to be rules to preemptively prevent any damage from occurring in the first place.

Last night in an attempt to follow the rules I tried sleeping on the two seat sofa in the living room next to dog but this was horrendous so we just came upstairs. My partner says it’s impossible to relax so we’ll just have to drive gone today!

I feel like places say ‘pet friendly’ to get your money when they actually aren’t at all! AIBU?

I’ve just googled but can’t find anything about a dog sleeping in its own bed in a bedroom is less hygienic than it sleeping in the living room.

So this isn't your own bedroom, it's a bedroom in a home you are renting for a week. Your dog might be clean, but a previous occupant's might have fleas, worms, incontinence. You can't realistically expect a holiday home owner to properly deep clean, wash carpets etc in each room after each short stay, so its more practical to say no pets in bedrooms or on sofas.

Flinstones · 06/07/2024 20:06

I never said I cared what they did in their own homes, I care what they do out & about as it affects me.

We have stayed at many dog friendly cottages over the years.
Our dog sleeps upstairs at home but I wouldn't dream of letting her upstairs or on a bed in a holiday let. Why would you?
But I agree you should be told in advance for those whose dogs can't handle it

How refreshing a responsible dog owner who doesn't think the rules don't apply to there dog. Smile

I’m completely happy to follow the rules. But they have to tell me what the rules are before I’m committed to staying!

It’s a lovely place but I’m not going to come back here as I genuinely don’t want to be breaking the rules. Im just stuck now as the rules are coming so late in the day. Even if they’d sent something the day beforehand we might have been able to sort something else.

@Fluffyelephant

goid decision! Don't stree yourself out with it & for his sake stop tag teaming! He's not going to destroy the place, so what if he comes with you when you get changed.

they have no right advertising it as 'Dog Friendly' when what they mean is 'dog barely tolerated because we want your money'

Treat it as you do your own home. Ignore their ridiculous demands.

leave a review!!

Dirty beasts. I love a good dog thread, they all go the same way.

Huh?

If a dog has fleas, what difference does it make if it sleeps upstairs or downstairs, or on/off sofas? Confused

I like to express the old anal glands on the curtains if they're dark.

Train the fleas to stay downstairs.

Blink282 · 06/07/2024 20:22

Having holidayed with dogs in the UK for years, I think the default meaning of “dog friendly” IS dogs downstairs / not unattended only, especially with the big holiday cottage chains.

There’s a FB group called “dog friendly holiday cottages UK” where owners who are happy for dogs to go anywhere post; we’ve used them a few times.

We once stayed in a cottage managed by a big chain (maybe Sykes?) where the restrictions were that dogs couldn't go upstairs etc. But when we arrived, the owners met us at the door, and said they actually didn't care where the dogs went, and we were allowed to have ours on the sofas/beds etc. if we wanted to.

I think a lack of clarity doesn't help, tbh. Places need to be upfront about what "dog friendly" means before booking, not spring a rule change on people when they turn up at the door.

If you rent a "no pet allowed" property, it won't affect you, surely it cannot be that hard, even for you.

OhmygodDont · 06/07/2024 20:29

Also worth noting sometimes no pets just means no randoms pets. Not that the owner doesn’t take their own 😬

maddiemookins16mum · 06/07/2024 20:34

Yanbu and I say that a a non dog owner and someone who never books accommodation that says dogs welcome. I don’t want to stay somewhere that dogs have been.

emscot · 06/07/2024 20:43

This happened to us recently, booked thru airbnb as dog friendly, no restrictions mentioned in the 'house rules' section. Arrived to find a stair gate fitted and typed notice saying dogs not allowed upstairs and not on the furniture. I was so annoyed, like you I wouldn't have booked if the listing had mentioned these rules as my dogs are allowed free rein at home. Luckily we had taken a couple of throw blankets with us from home so I used these on the sofa and the bed. Kept stair gate close during the day to minimise any hair upstairs. The host hasn't left me a review so I wondered if she was a bit pissed with me but if you have specific rules regarding dogs then you need to make it clear in the booking!

They are though. The filthiest animal - lick their genitals, nose into other dogs' anuses, literally eat shit, roll around in fox poo. It is unfathomable to me how people got sucked in to welcoming these shit beasts into their homes, let alone their beds. Gross.

So too might the children who were last in there.
We dont ban children from these places.
To add, the adults too might also have fleas, worms or be incontinent.

If you want a dog free holiday, go to a place that doesnt allow pets ever. And who owners dont have pets either.

SpringleDingle · 06/07/2024 21:02

I’d ignore that. You paid £50 for the cleaning specific for the dog. I’d keep him off the furniture or cover it (we always take throws) but mine sleeps on the bedroom floor so that’s what we’d do.

Flinstones · 06/07/2024 21:05

There it is the "we don't ban children" comment!! I'm out now you can't reason with stupid!! Comparing dogs & children!!

Please tell your friends that their cottages are amazing 😍 We stayed in one last summer and I’ve recommended them to people on here looking for suggestions.

Maybe they’ve changed the rules, but I’m fairly certain that at the one we stayed in you were allowed to leave dogs unattended too, so long as you were certain that they wouldn’t get stressed or bark? We didn’t, but it was really nice to have the option if we wanted to pop out somewhere for a couple of hours 😊

Yes I think theres a couple where you can, and some you can't as they have closer neighbours. They are such lovely cottages though, and lovely people!

Yeah, or they're about to have a heart attack.

I've noticed a trend, men get grumpier and then several weeks later have a heart attack. It's weird and happened a lot in the last few years.
