To expect pet friendly to mean a dog can go everywhere

We arrived yesterday in a holiday house for a family trip that was booked because the place described itself as pet friendly. On arrival though we were presented with very intense written rules regarding dogs - they were in bold and used terms like ‘under absolutely no circumstances with no exception can your dog…’

If we had been told these rules in advance we would never have paid to stay here as they absolutely won’t work for our dog and we know that. The main rule causing issue is that he’s only actually allowed in the living room and part of the hall so 75% of the house is off limits including the stairs. He’s well behaved and good natured and is a breed that doesn’t shed hair. But he’s a clingy breed and follows us around and always sleeps on the floor by our bed otherwise he gets very distressed.

The owners know a dog was coming because we told them and we paid an extra £50. But none of these rules were mentioned. If he caused damage then of course I would pay (as I would if it was caused by a child or adult) but this seems to be rules to preemptively prevent any damage from occurring in the first place.

Last night in an attempt to follow the rules I tried sleeping on the two seat sofa in the living room next to dog but this was horrendous so we just came upstairs. My partner says it’s impossible to relax so we’ll just have to drive gone today!

I feel like places say ‘pet friendly’ to get your money when they actually aren’t at all! AIBU?

I never said they banned dogs! I have never been to a hotel abroad & they have dogs in them. I don't have to holiday with peoples dogs. I cruise, no dogs! I go to 5 star all inclusive, no dogs, pure bliss compared to this country.

I love how you make stuff up as you go along, and you get more and more enraged as you go 😂😂

You are hilarious.

I love how the insults become the line of defence when you know I'm right.

On the contrary, there seems to be lot of dog haters here, yourself included. Considering there are considerably more holiday homes that don’t allow pets then of course it makes sense that you wouldn’t choose pet friendly. Hardly rocket science. Personally I would far rather share space with a dog than some posters.

Me too!

I just don't understand why you'd engage with this thread

You don't like dogs
You hate dogs
You are disgusted by dogs
We get it

You don't strike me as someone who would ever in a month of Sundays book a dog friendly holiday cottage so why would you give a flying fuck whether dog owners abide by rules in a place you will never go to??

You appear to just want to say how much you hates dogs and dog owners
BORING

But the rules would be the same wherever you go from what people are saying! People on here just ignore them apparently!!

The rules would/should be set out in the terms and conditions upon booking.
These rules weren't so therefore not enforceable as no contract is being broken?

Boring dog owner response.

dottiedodah · 06/07/2024 19:31

I would ignore tbh. They have been less than truthful with you.as long as doggy doesn't chew or poo. No issue a good clean up and who's the wiser?

You are absolutely wrong to pretend that owners should not take their dogs in a "dog friendly" rental or hotel.

There's no way to twist this in any way shape or form, if it's "dog friendly" , you can go with a dog.

It cannot be that hard to comprehend, is it? Hating dogs makes no difference on the rules.

but what are you trying to achieve or put forward?

You want to campaign for all dogs to be eradicated? This is not the right place, and you won't have many followers anyway 😂

It's a bit unhygienic to allow dogs to sleep in your bedroom, especially in someone else's or a holiday house.

Can you explain why it's unhygienic for a dog to sleep in its own bed in the bedroom versus the lounge?

Do you not have a Google function?

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/07/2024 19:42

We had similar in a house we stayed in last year, only not quite as draconian. He was allowed in downstairs rooms but not upstairs or (weirdly) in the garden. Nothing in T&Cs, just a bold, capitalised, typed and laminated A4 sheet sellotaped to the kitchen wall when we arrived.
We'd already brought our dog's bed with us so we kept him off the sofa during the evening. There was no way he'd settle downstairs alone in a strange house at night so I bought a blanket and just let him sleep on that on my bed.
All was fine and the owners either never knew or never bothered saying anything.

Logimind · 06/07/2024 19:43

I would be annoyed too - ridiculous to claim pet friendly and have these rules. I've never stayed anywhere with my dog and discovered rules like that. Only rule has been not to leave dog unattended and obviously clean up after them.

I would ignore them and let your dog come upstairs to sleep in the basket by your bed. No way would my elderly dog accept sleeping anywhere other than in his basket by my bed and I'm certainly not sleeping on a sofa. He also follows me around so no chance of restricting him to the living room!

Flinstones · 06/07/2024 19:46

It's not about eradicating dogs, I have to accept whether I agree or not people take them, what I hate & strongly disagree with is that when rules are put in place & the owners don't like it because they treat the animal like a baby is that they decide the rules don't apply to them! I feel sorry for the people who are renting out holiday lets & being abused by irresponsible dog owners.
I will continue to go out of my way to holiday without other peoples pets.

I’ve just googled but can’t find anything about a dog sleeping in its own bed in a bedroom is less hygienic than it sleeping in the living room.

This is exactly why I wouldn't book anywhere that says pet friendly, dog owners who treat dogs like children, makes me feel physically sick to think of a dog being in a bed 🤢 absolutely disgusting.

Good to know that you would see me as "absolutely disgusting" for having my DPT trained dog sleep on my bed to help with pain management. Cheers for that.

Flinstones · 06/07/2024 19:55

I have absolutely no idea how a dog sleeping next to you would help with pain management but if it helps you in your own bed at home then that's good for you. What is absolutely disgusting is a dog sleeping in a holiday let.

in this case the "rules" of booking were that the property was dog friendly. So the OP took her dog.

You seem extremely bitter about the way other people treat their dogs, why would you care what they do in their own home? Did you put an ultimatum to someone who chose the dog over you? 😂

I've literally said how. My clean, groomed dog on the bed in a pet friendly holiday let is not disgusting. Human beings are disgusting.

OhmygodDont · 06/07/2024 19:58

Did the place have an actual set of t&c’s op? Like you checked their whole website and actually read them fully if they existed.

We deal with contracts and the amount of people who claim it’s not in the t&c’s or they didn’t see it yet they have barely changed in 11 years 😅

I mean you’re not wrong ina. Way even humans lick other humans assholes these days 🤢

Its the fur for me personally.

WalkingonWheels · 06/07/2024 20:03

Seeing some of the videos online of the state humans leave Air B&Bs and hotel rooms in, I'm surprised anyone uses them any more.

Bamboozles · 06/07/2024 20:05

We have stayed at many dog friendly cottages over the years.
Our dog sleeps upstairs at home but I wouldn't dream of letting her upstairs or on a bed in a holiday let. Why would you?
But I agree you should be told in advance for those whose dogs can't handle it
