Parents comment about children on sports day!

Well I absolutely know I'm not being u reasonable but I'm just stunned at what came out of this dad's mouth!

I've spoken to him a couple times and I am friends with his wife. He seemed OK. We were discussing the running races and I commented on how fast his son was and how well he had done. His reply was this........
"It was nice to see all the kids cheering on the fatty children last in the race and struggling at the back"
I was stunned didn't know what to say, so I turned around and started speaking to someone else.
Why did I not say anything! I think I was too shocked that someone would say something so horrible.

Please give me some come backs that I could have said

Jesus Christ - people are disgusting. This is a parenting forum and we are shrugging at grown adults calling small children “fatties” at a school sports day?

revolting.

Suppose it depends where you are! I can assure you in greater Belfast area this humour is normal.

Not here is isn't.

And that makes it ok?

What about ‘sure it’s horrible calling them the fatty children’ makes you think this pp thinks it’s ok? You sound argumentative & hard work. Your reply doesn’t match your quote.

Whistledown1005 · 05/07/2024 21:48

I think you're missed the point of an adult calling children "fatties"

I didn't miss the point. It was clearly a joke and he didn't say it within their earshot, so where exactly is the harm? Other than you apparently having a fit of the vapours over something completely inconsequential. I do wonder how people like you manage to get through the day.

ElliLovesDogs · 05/07/2024 22:53

I would have said- oh thats not very nice

shows what kind of person he is. Avoid in future

TheaBrandt · 05/07/2024 22:57

And some posters still criticise those of us that don’t force our non athletic kids to fail to perform in front of a crowd of random parents. Yes some of those parents are judging - kids aren’t daft and realise that despite the sickly sweet reassurances.

Phewthatwasclose · 05/07/2024 22:57

What a complete non issue! His sentiment was perfectly good, but he obviously just had a bit of a ‘foot in mouth’ moment ….

Ifittellsthebiggestlieswearstheloudestties · 05/07/2024 23:01

Russian bot?

lazzapazza · 05/07/2024 23:10

Were they fat?
Were they getting cheered on?

What he said is an absolute non event. Anybody offended needs to spend more time ensuring that their children are not overweight.

Timeheals · 05/07/2024 23:13

Wow - these responses! No I wouldn’t be comfortable with what he said and would not engage with him again

buma · 05/07/2024 23:20

In all honesty, I would've laughed.
He was making a joke.

worcesterpear · 05/07/2024 23:30

I don't understand how this is a joke? It surely isn't sarcasm, so what type of joke is it?

Janedoe82 · 05/07/2024 23:36

See the video above- just funny calling them fatties when knows he shouldn’t. Kind of subversive. Said to deliberately shock/ poke fun. You aren’t laughing at the children being fat but at the inappropriateness of calling them that.

VJBR · 05/07/2024 23:39

People are offended so easily these days.

Even if it was your own "fatty child"? 🤔

Janedoe82 · 05/07/2024 23:50

I wouldn’t laugh if it was about my own over weight child. But that opens up a whole other debate about child hood obesity and my point above about the fact he was being subversive. Joking about something that there is a societal norm we don’t joke about.

I don't agree. The forum is important. Context is important. Nuance is important. That's why comedians on stage get away with things the rest of us don't.

I don't know. If this man was trying to make a joke doesn't that show him to be quite socially inept?
I mean, there was a very high chance he'd piss someone off, as he in fact did.

I know!!!!! Just shows that these people who think it's ok are not ok themselves. Should be ashamed

I make it through the day by talking about children respectfully regardless of their weight which is not their fault. It wasn't a joke, jokes are suppose to be funny.

Bet your a person who also dismisses "lads banter". Yea I am arguing back because I know I'm not unreasonable. Not going to agree with people who think it's ok to call children fatties and make fun of them.

Also not that it matters but I know back story on this guy and he is not kind to his wife and puts her down.

"fat" is an English word with a meaning. If you ban the use of the word, then people will have difficulty expressing that meaning, and will just adopt another word to use instead, which means the same.

I am fat. Why would I not use the word? Everyone can see I am fat, or a "fatty" if you prefer. I could use another word, if I wanted to bend the meaning of another word to mean the same, but I chose not to, because it would be stupid. Everyone can see I am fat.

But it wasn't just using that term. He was poking fun at the children struggling. So in term he was being unkind. Especially since just before I'd said his son was fast and he said yea he is. Then contrasting to his son. It was like he was looking down in his mind on these "poor fatty kids".

Context means everything.

You might not mind being called fat or fatty but you're an adult not a child.

I'm so shocked at some of these fattist comments
