Well I absolutely know I'm not being u reasonable but I'm just stunned at what came out of this dad's mouth!

I've spoken to him a couple times and I am friends with his wife. He seemed OK. We were discussing the running races and I commented on how fast his son was and how well he had done. His reply was this........
"It was nice to see all the kids cheering on the fatty children last in the race and struggling at the back"
I was stunned didn't know what to say, so I turned around and started speaking to someone else.
Why did I not say anything! I think I was too shocked that someone would say something so horrible.

Please give me some come backs that I could have said

My (exD)H used to make sneery scoffing comments about other kids at our musical theatre showcase, and my standard response was (loudly) ‘you know every child here has a mum and dad here to the left and right of you?’

I couldn't get worked up about it. Some kids ARE fat. Some adults are fat too. It's not like he said it within their earshot.

My favourite part of Sports Day is seeing the children cheering on the classmates who are lagging behind. Fat or otherwise. Brilliant sense of camraderie and some adults could learn a thing or two from it.

Edited

I think you're missed the point of an adult calling children "fatties"

Nope. Still not an excuse

maybe just a dark sense of humour!! People need to stop getting offended by nonsense all the time. I would have laughed. Doesn’t mean I don’t like over weight children 🙄

What?

I'm Irish and it's not remotely funny.

Nobody I know would say something like that.

Well I work in a social work type office in Belfast. You wouldn’t need to come in if you think that is offensive. Or watch Ricky Gervais 😂

You're saying all this now from the comfort of your own Mumsnet account, but you didn't even say something simple at the time, like 'That's rude'.

He was rude, he was nasty too but there's no point in you going on about it now.

The horse has well and truly bolted.

Janedoe82 · 05/07/2024 22:09

It call comes down to intent. Did he intend to be cruel or was he making a joke. If the latter I wouldn’t be getting worked up about it.

Janedoe82 · 05/07/2024 22:10

Some people have this sort of sense of humour. Some don’t. Freedom of speech and all that….

I really like Ricky Gervais @Janedoe82, but that's not the same as making comments about children in real life.

Totally agree. You can say anything, its the intent that's important. Alot of over sensitive posters here

Try being on the receiving end of some real racism/bullying - it's a lot different

Janedoe82 · 05/07/2024 22:13

It was a bit mean but provided they didn’t hear him I wouldn’t be getting worked up.

Suppose it depends where you are! I can assure you in greater Belfast area this humour is normal.

Yes. From actual abuse. Have you ever wondered why people who work in this field tend to have quite dark senses of humour? People like Joe Brand, Lily Savage, Alan Carr??

HcbSS · 05/07/2024 22:27

I would have said something along the linea of ‘well that is something you should think but not say out loud’

I do hate seeing fat and unfit children though. As PP say, it’s not their fault…

Ifittellsthebiggestlieswearstheloudestties · 05/07/2024 22:29

YABU to be shocked. How do you get on in life? It must be a very cosy one where the worst that happens is someone being heartened by kids encouraging each other but used the wrong words to describe what he meant

brunettemic · 05/07/2024 22:31

Screamingabdabz · 05/07/2024 21:01

This is why I would do away with sports day unless it was optional to compete.

It’s never ‘just for fun’, there are always the competitive arseholes who aren’t just content with doing well, they have to be snide and see it as some moral superiority. The public humiliation for those latecomers is real and horrible.

🙄
I’d do away with nativity plays and any other form of show kids have to be as well on that basis. No awards at the end of term/the school year, because we can’t have kids seeing others have done better than them either. Definitely never invite any parents in to see anything.
I love sports day, the kids are always so supportive and the fact that so many races, like egg and spoon and the beanbag on the head are largely based on luck is a great leveller.

OldTinHat · 05/07/2024 22:38

I wanted to reply but haven't the words, really.
