Parking in disabled spaces when disabled person sitting in car

Mokel · 05/07/2024 14:42

If the blue badge holder isn’t going to leave the car, the car shouldn’t be parked in a disabled bay.

The purpose behind disabled bays is for disabled people don’t have to walk far to entrances to shops, doctors etc. If not leaving the car, there’s no need to park up there.

If a non disabled person is going to leave the car leaving the disabled person in the car, they should be parking in a normal parking space.

So if the Yanks used 'cripple' you'd think it ok?

'Handicap' is offensive to disabled people people. Language around disability is important. Disabled people are disabled not by their disabilities but the failure of society to make adjustments to enable them to participate fully in society like anybody else. And that failure starts with negative attitudes of the sort you seem to show.

I watched a vet programme the other day and he described a horse as crippled. I was offended on behalf of the horse.

Having just looked at my terms and conditions of my blue badge, it's there for anyone carrying out errands for me too. I don't even need to be in the car.

So a perfectly healthy person is FULLY ENTITLED to use my blue badge to carry out errands for me.

It makes no difference where I physically am.

That’s very unusual. Are you in the UK?

Would you mind quoting the T&Cs or posting a pic? (Without showing your confidential details of course).

Where is this?

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 20:14

Thats nonsense.

fungipie · 05/07/2024 20:15

Nonsense indeed.

I took my disabled mum shopping today in our local supermarket. Halfway through the trip she was tired and in pain, so she went back to the car, while I paid for both of them. I suppose I could have abandoned my shopping, took DM back to the car, moved the car and hoped that my shopping was still there when I got back. Except that DM would have been anxious about not being able to go to the toilet if needed. So I should gave just...taken her home and come back another time? Anticipated this and just not gone at all?

That’s absolutely not true.

Here’s the part of the rules that covers this, just incase anyone is interested.

That is very unfair. The man was NOT disabled- he told me himself it was his wife's badge and that she was at home. And I certainly did NOT shout at him, or was rude. My comment was quietly made, and with a polite greeting.

I was in terrible pain myself, due to knee operation, but parked far from entrance where spaces were available as I would never take a disabled space, and didn't have a badge as temporary conditions do not warrant one.

Since then, pain continues and some days I can hardly drag my bad leg as knee won't bend. I do not take a disabled space and manage best I can, in pain. Hence the reason I do get annoyed (but remain polite and friendly) with those who abuse the system.

We always get these non disabled martys feeling sorry for themselves.
Me me me, just because they're out of action for a while.

Try being disabled for life and having ignoramus self pitying martys watching your every and judging you.

Bugger off and mind your own business!!!

Toastandbutterand · 05/07/2024 20:43

You're all right, I got that wrong, sorry!

I am allowed to sit in the car though, if someone else is running my errands! I took a screenshot shot, can I post that or will I out myself?

FloofyBird · 05/07/2024 20:46

Why do people keep talking about the disabled person going back to the car? If they've got out the car in the first place they haven't abused the bb by staying in the car like OP originally stated.

Because how the hell does op know if the person in the car had left and come back? Unless they witnessed them pull up?

Did OP even know that the person who remained in the car was actually the blue badge holder?

Unless she marched up, scrutinised the badge (they have passport style photos on them) and cross-examined the person in the car then she wouldn't know. The person who left the vehicle could still have been the badge holder. Perfectly legitimate use of the badge if they were.

Also, disabled people are allowed to return to the vehicle if they need or wish to.

FloofyBird · 05/07/2024 21:23

Op never gave details (or if she did I missed them so apologies) so for all we know someone might have told her they use their badge like this.

Members of the public with a bee in their bonnet are not entitled to approach me for personal information or ask to scrutinise my BB.

If you think I'm fraudulently using a BB you're welcome to tell any car park managers or even write to the council.

Sorry, I know you aren't saying that this is what you would do but people do and it is not a pleasant experience.

Post it if it doesn't have personal details on it.

Whether someone is abusing a BB or not, members of the public have no right to challenge people over it.

You're still wrong. If someone is running errands for you and you're staying in the car they should be parking in a normal bay.

The rules are absolutely crystal clear

It doesn't matter what the OP thinks they have seen. The BB holder is using their badge legitimately if they get out of the car, even if they aren't out of the car for as long as their non-disabled companion. If a BB is being abused it is for the appropriate parking warden, police officer or council officer to deal with not the public though.

That's the complete answer, really.

Anotherparkingthread · 05/07/2024 21:52

This is absolutely fucking stupid.

They might have felt well when they got in the car then taken a turn and not feel well enough to go in the shop - but still need essentials.

They might want to just go out and see the world go by or enjoy the drive. So they don't feel totally disconnected. Particularly if they have limited social contact. It may be they like chatting on the journey with their carer who could well be their son or daughter etc.

They could have been to a medical appointment and be stopping to pick up bits on the way home. Or sending somebody else to get prescription etc. People can multiple things in one day. You're seeing a snippet and knowing nothing.

You would have to be lacking empathy as well as imagination to not realise these situations and many other perfectly good reasons exist.

If the disabled person is in the car in the normal parking space and then there is an emergency, they may not be able to get out of the car.

There are always lots of empty accessibility parking spots in my area. Are they in such short supply elsewhere that this even needs to be a debate?

This happened to me! Well not an emergency as such but basically I parked in a non-disabled space with a disabled person with me. They weren’t leaving the car so we didn’t use their blue badge to park in a disabled space. Got back to the car and the engine wouldn’t start. Cars parked either side of us quite close, no way of getting disabled person out of the car until they came back and moved their cars.

Not saying that’s a reason to park on a disabled space if the disabled person isn’t leaving the car but it’s always made me think twice about it ever since.

I've no bee in my bonnet thank you very much and you can get off your high horse with me.

I'm pointing out how OP cannot possibly know that the badge is being used illegally unless she twattishly marched up and scrutinised. I certainly wasn't suggesting that that is what she or anyone else should do.

I'm well aware of where the photos are on blue badges, my mother has one.

I couldn't give a shiny shit how you use your blue badge and I have no time or respect for busybodies who try to police it. I'd have thought it was clear from my post that it wasn't supportive of OP's frankly idiotic stance.

Hey ho.

I did apologise 2 secoafter pressing post.

I wasn't even saying that you have a bee in your bonnet, I was talking about people who come over asking to inspect my badge as you had said that the OP would have to have seen the photo on the BB.

You have made me laugh though, if I could still get on a high horse there would be no getting me down!

redalex261 · 05/07/2024 22:04

Agree, but there is fuck all you can do about it. All you can hope for is the next time they actually need a disabled space so they can get out of the vehicle to go somewhere some other disabled badge owner is sitting in the car posting on Mumsnet while their daughter/husband/partner/best pal has jogged along to the post office or wherever!

Wish they would do away with the whole scheme. It’s abused to the point of making it worthless.
