Why no St George's Cross ?

Just watching the BBC coverage live from Downing street, the crowed gathered inside did have umbrella's but these were taken away and replaced with small flags. Plenty of Scottish flags, odd Welsh one and lot's of Union Flags. Why is the English flag missing ?

Because the right have bastardised it

And no Northern Ireland

VolvoFan · 05/07/2024 12:59

Because to be an English nationalist is to be considered a white supremacist. I hate it, too. I think you should be proud of your flag and your nation. But it only takes a single complaint from one particularly spiteful Anglophobic moron to ruin it.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 05/07/2024 13:01

Because it has negative connotations thanks to the far right. I suspect you know that though.

Because England doesn’t have a devolved government - it is governed via the UK government. Wales and Scotland have devolved government and they are trying to show they now have majorities for Wales and Scotland in the HoP as well as nationally ( pre the election they didn’t have a majority in the HoP for Scotland) and to highlight the union, they aren’t planning to agree to any independence referendums any time soon for the devolved governments

And no Northern Ireland

Labour didn't win any seats in Northern Ireland. BBC seemed to suggest it was to show appreciation of those to voted in Labour MPs over SNP or Plaid Cymru.

bergamotorange · 05/07/2024 13:03

I don't think this is the biggest talking point of the day.

Maybe so but I still think it’s a PR mistake to not have all nations represented.

Doingmybest12 · 05/07/2024 17:37

Isn't it because most conversation and coverage will be London centric and England centric by default. I wouldn't want to see England flags in addition to emphasise this more but happy to see the flags of the other nations as a celebration of them and to remember that UK policy isn't just about England and the other nations have different issues and requirements.

The Union flag represents all the nations, so all the nations were represented.

C’mon now… union flag + Scottish flag + Welsh flag….but no NI?

There's no flag for NI that wouldn't be contentious.

I'm the first to complain when we're forgotten, but flegs and NI is a whole thing best avoided. Especially in July. Grin

You know why, OP
Unless you have just moved here

Thepeopleversuswork · 06/07/2024 09:29

Because the UK government governs the four nations of the UK, not just England and because the St George cross has been appropriated by jingoistic thugs. It’s hard to imagine anyone could fail to understand these two things.

Yes, it’s really not that complicated. Unless as pps have said, you’ve just moved to the UK.

namesnamez · 06/07/2024 09:47

According to that Yougov link approx 40% of English Labour voters hate the Union flag too Hmm

Coolblur · 06/07/2024 10:00

I hate that national flags are often claimed as a banner for groups with an agenda.

A different reason from the issue with the St George's cross, but 10 years ago, when the SNP were campaigning ahead of the independence referendum in Scotland, they effectively claimed the Saltire (Scottish flag) as their banner. During that time, and for a while afterwards, displaying the flag was viewed as a declaration of support for the SNP and independence. A we know from the result of the 2014 referendum, the majority of Scots did not support the idea of independence.
I thought it was disgraceful behaviour. Scotland is a nation of people, not a political party. How dare one party decide the national flag belongs to them?

Oldcroneandthreewitches · 06/07/2024 10:03

I was with a Welsh friend and he thought it was hilarious that we are are the only country in the UK that cannot celebrate their own flag.

The left have done a real number on this country

You think the Left is responsible for the fact that the England flag has been co-opted by jingoists and racists?

It’s all in your head!

Panama2 · 06/07/2024 10:14

We should claim it back from the thugs why should we give in to them!

Oldcroneandthreewitches · 06/07/2024 10:26

It wasn’t given to them. Some thugs used it but 60 million people live in this country - that a shit load of people that don’t and didn’t.

We must not be ashamed of this country especially when people risk there lives to get here.
