Never been a Scottish nationalist - now a bit sad that I won't live in a Scandi-style independent utopia in my lifetime

Unpleasable, me

Even the countries in Scandinavia aren’t Scandi-style independent utopias, so I wouldn’t worry.

NeedToChangeName · 05/07/2024 09:47

Scottish independence would be like Brexit on steroids. Be careful what you wish for

VelvetKimono · 05/07/2024 09:47

😃

VelvetKimono · 05/07/2024 09:49

I must say I assumed a level of irony in the @OptimismvsRealism post?

ACynicalDad · 05/07/2024 09:49

Scotland is already a net receiver of funds from London, whilst there is a case for north sea oil that's running out and about to be phased out and would be needed to repay a share of Scotland's national debt. It would be an absolute banana case, not a Scandi utopia. The only place that could break away and create that is London and the home counties.

MrsWhiskerz · 05/07/2024 09:50

You could always move to Sweden and live in a fair right government if that’s the utopian dream you wish for 😀

But since you’re just being ironic - I think you should romanticise your day and go for a walk on the hills, mountains or in the forest. It’s a beautiful place.

Biker47 · 05/07/2024 09:55

There would be no utopia in an independent Scotland, the SNP and independence campaigners are habitual liars, telling everyone only what they want to hear, not the actual reality. Brexit negotiations would be a walk in the park compared to Indy Scotland, and the outcomes would be even worse.

BashfulClam · 05/07/2024 09:57

Have you seen the state of NHS Scotland right now and they raised our income tax which had caused a condition called ‘Scottish Weighting’ which has sent companies south to avoid raising wages to cover increased income tax…utter shambles!

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/07/2024 09:58

I'm so pleased independence is dead in the water. I'm from the borders and its the opposite of what everyone I know wants.

LordPercyPercy · 05/07/2024 09:59

If Scotland was to get independence and you moved there, you would definitely not be living in a Scandi-style utopia. In fact, even if you moved to Scandinavia you'd find that this utopia no longer exists, if it ever did.

CranfordScones · 05/07/2024 10:03

That'll be the Scandi-style utopias that have the problem with the far right and the gun violence that they don't like to talk about.

And after everything Nicola Sturgeon said in 2022 as well: “If it does transpire that there is no lawful way for this Parliament to give the people of Scotland the choice of independence in a referendum and if the UK government continues to deny a Section 30 order my party will fight the UK General Election on this single question - Should Scotland be an independent country?”

Someone didn't get the message. Or maybe they did.

ItsBinDayToday · 05/07/2024 10:08

Scottish NHS is a reason it wouldn’t be a utopia.

I didn’t think the SNP actually wanted independence, just wanted to use it as a threat to the British government.

WednesdayWeWearPink · 05/07/2024 10:08

Scotland had a chance to voted for independence and it voted no. There’s not going to be another referendum for a long time unfortunately. Nothing to do with last night’s results.

DoIWantTo · 05/07/2024 10:16

Ah we’d grumble even if we did get it OP, grass is always greener and all that Grin at this point I’d sell independence to the first country offering a bit of sunshine, we’ve had rain for months in this corner 😩

Gymnopedie · 05/07/2024 10:21

There, there OP - all is not lost. Utopia may still be within reach.

You see before the election we thought the SNP told us that winning a majority of Scottish seats would be a mandate for independence, but they didn't really. We all just misheard them. The two aren't connected at all. We know that because they said so last night.

And Scotland only went Labour because they were determined to keep the Tories out of national government. It had absolutely nothing to do with wanting the SNP out. Nothing at all.

So all is not lost. Don't give up hope. The SNP aren't 😁

19lottie82 · 05/07/2024 10:22

I’m assuming that the OP is being sarcastic……

the scary thing is the SNP still got a hell of a lot of votes, just not enough for the seats, thank the lord

VelvetKimono · 05/07/2024 10:22

I might pop over to Brigadoon

OptimismvsRealism · 05/07/2024 10:37

Ah guys I've never really been keen but I still think it was nice to have a daydream Vs the sort of end days feeling the UK has had since Brexit. I think we'll have to get poorer before it kicks off as a serious option.

DinnaeFashYersel · 05/07/2024 10:48

I'm relieved. Very relieved.

CocoapuffPuff · 05/07/2024 10:58

The current Scottish govt has proved without question that they are not fit to run a cake stall at a primary school fete. I was yes last time, I'll be a no forever more. I'll be damned if I vote for a shower that considers me less important than a bloke in lipstick. Fuck that.

OptimismvsRealism · 05/07/2024 11:20

But his feelings, cocoapuff! Literal violence.

OptimismvsRealism · 05/07/2024 11:21

In all seriousness, they expanded too quickly and some very silly people got delusions of grandeur re their own capabilities in the desperate rush to get bums on seats.

Preq · 05/07/2024 11:29

I’m another one relieved, I’m someone who was pro Indy and an snp member in the past, the snp have shown numerous times at this point that they couldn’t run a piss up in a brewery and despite their constant chattering that they’re sooooo above Westminster politics, are the exact same flavour of useless and childish as the majority of them in westminister.

LadyFeatheringt0n · 05/07/2024 11:30

Scotland can't afford to be a scandi utopia.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 05/07/2024 11:32

I've lived in Scandinavia. It's nowhere near as nice as many people believe.
