Wales what's the point in voting when it's devolved

What is the point? So many family and friends aren't bothering because it's irrelevant to Wales. Nobody gives a toss in Westminster.

Vote for the candidate who can best represent you. The MPs who give a toss in Westminster are the Welsh MPs people vote for. Unless they are shit- then they need to be voted out.

Because it's not irrelevant to wales - not all issues are devolved. Vote for whose immigration, defence, foreign policy, welfare, policing etc policies you want

ThePoshUns · 04/07/2024 14:55

Not everything is devolved, policing isn't , taxation isn't.
I'd vote to get rid of the WAG if I could.

I've read all their bumph that's been pushed through the letterbox. They've only mentioned the NHS, education. Nowt about immigration, defence, foreign policy etc. I promise you.

They're wrong if they think it's irrelevant.

Level of funding to Wales, taxation, wider healthcare, defence, industrial strategy and on and on and on.

They need a basic book about our political system.

mnahmnah · 04/07/2024 15:02

They may not mention everything on their flyers, but it doesn’t change the fact that many issues are not devolved and therefore wales absolutely need to be represented in parliament

I'm in the same area as you and did have a leaflet from the "Socialist Labour Party" which did have a mention of defence. In the context of "make peace not war" and I'm pretty sure that they were in favour of unilateral disarmament, so that one went straight in the bin.

I don't think that the English realise how Welsh MPs work. National policy just isn't mentioned.

To be fair. Welsh MPs don't sit in the cabinet so their influence is minimal. Don't know if Scots and Irish do either to be honest.

I’ve voted SNP so that there’s at least a representative for Scotland in the Westminster parliament. I wouldn’t necessarily vote SNP in the Holyrood elections. But I agree with you - huge emphasis on education, NHS etc which is totally irrelevant.

DdraigGoch · 04/07/2024 15:40

Stephen Crabb was Work and Pensions Secretary and Simon Hart is the Chief Whip. Not counting the position of Welsh Secretary.

Exactly, it's worrying that they don't know this.

The fact they don't mention it doesn't mean it isn't relevant. Westminster politics impacts all aspects of life.

And Welsh MPs could sit in cabinet. Plus there is a Welsh Secretary.

Yes exactly - although there are issues with all of these of course.

Stephen Crabb - the Preseli sex pest... need I say more
Simon Hart - did sod all about Mark Menzies, brought the CW role into disrepute
David TC Davies - does nothing to 'ensure the devolution settlement continues to deliver a clear, fair and strong settlement for Wales' - chocolate teapot extraordinaire

Frankly they are an embarrassment to Wales, no matter the colour of their rosette and have done nothing to progress circumstances our side of the bridge.

Arlanymor · 04/07/2024 15:50

I would abolish the role of Welsh Secretary - it does nothing, totally toothless.

Arlanymor · 04/07/2024 15:53

I voted PC, not because I believe in burning down second homes (amazing how many people make that link more than 30 years later), but because their grass roots are genuinely tapped into what people want. They do so much locally and nationalism is an outmoded concept... it's about culturalism and building a 21st century Wales, based on what is great about our corner of the world.

OrwellianTimes · 04/07/2024 15:54

Because some powers are devolved and some aren’t.

Westminster controls the purse, and the tories have shown they don’t care about Wales.

What happens in Westminster affects everyone in Wales.

100%, they actively couldn't care less.

The Tory leaflets we e received have shown how out of touch they are - they’ve only discussed devolved matters.

Labour and Plaid Cymru leaflets here have both discussed matters that are relevant to Wales being represented in Westminster.

ThreeFeetTall · 04/07/2024 15:57

Jo Stevens (Cardiff MP) is likely to be in the next cabinet I think

Pedant note - taxation is partially devolved.

Same here (Swansea) - even the language in the Tory leaflets is odd. It feels like a Tory template with some Welshisms thrown in, bet they use the same in Scotland. They literally have no clue.

The Tory candidate here doesn’t even live in Wales. Helicoptered in from London. It’s so tone deaf it’s shocking. No one knows a thing about them.
