The relief (high school)

My son is due to start high school in September.

He has ASD and is currently in mainstream. The last 3 years his mental health has been patchy and it has taken a lot to keep him happy-ish at school - hats off to some truly phenomenal teaching assistants and his teacher this year has been brilliant.

He was approved for a specialist senior setting and has come back from his transition session absolutely buzzing. He’s already made friends (fist bumps as they left) and he says he can’t wait to start.

I know it’s only the start and there will be bumps but he regularly tells me how much he hates school and how hard it is and I feel so glad that he’s had such a positive experience.

He’s so funny and quirky and seeing all these kids he got in with is just so brilliant.

I don’t think I realised how anxious I was about it all.

Good for him (and you)! Long may it last.

Thank you. At the very least I can have the first summer in years not filled with ‘why do I have to go back I HATE IT’

That's wonderful! School is such a big part of their life and it's so hard when it goes wrong. Fingers crossed this school is just right for him!
