To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

I voted Tory in the past and felt embarrassed - not because I thought I was voting wrong, but because people love to shout about what a great person they are for voting Labour, and if you vote Tory you’re evil.
I can’t vote for Labour out of peer pressure when I think their stance on women’s rights is wrong. Also not a fan of being labelled a transphobe just because I think women-only spaces should be protected.
This year I spoilt my ballot paper for the first time ever. Feel pretty depressed about the state of politics in general at the moment.

OP it’s a real shame that so many on here are so intolerant. I hate to say it but you only ever see if from the left. Quick to shame, trying to look virtuous yet often don’t have a clue on actual policy.
Be proud that you have exercised your right to vote for what YOU think is best.

You really don't only see it from the left, I'm neither and I can vouch for that... and if you think labour are left leaning then you have been asleep at the wheel 😆 🤣 😂 have you seen kier starmer? Heard him speak? I have lol 😆 😅

QueenMegan · 04/07/2024 21:09

If 14 years of decline leaders who lie and prop up their rich chums match your values ...then that could bd the real reason you're ashamed?

i have voted to have an Oppposition on this occasion. I reckon SKS has the election zipped tight, so I voted against the supermajority.

No such thing as a supermajority in British politics. You’ve bought a Tory lie.

Keir Starmer is appearing centrist to gain votes. It is widely accepted that once they form a government we will see a very quick, large shift back to the left. Remember this is the same man that endorsed Corbyn.

There would still be an opposition, it just wouldn't have been the tories. They deserve 0 seats.... nothing but crooks and cheats the lot of them...

Well done for buying the propaganda....

Tory practice, too , perhaps!

Nope there's only 1 and that is lack of skilled UK workforce.... badly funded and failing education a lack of government backed incentive for UK companies to acctually train UK Citizens.

The conservatives have been saying for 10 of 14 years they would lower immigration and yet it's doubled... you think they wanted to just grant all these visas? Of course they didn't but they have decimated the education system. De-incentivised UK businesses from training in house and made it cheaper to import skills instead.

The solutions are so clear, but when you put people who know nothing about struggle or the actual value of the £ or making a successful workforce in charge, this is what you get... the easy way out. The way to make the fastest buck with no thought of the crash 14 years down the line...

Well yes there are. We took in thousands of Ukrainians because of the war, people from Hong Kong due to the crack down and Afghanistans through the Resettlement Scheme. We take in hundreds of thousands of students and skilled workers for the NHS. We take in unskilled workers for the hospitality industry and the care sector as well as many other sectors such as farming.

Papyrophile · 04/07/2024 21:15

@cardibach , true, but I would prefer a more balanced HoC. I have voted for a balance of power, which on this occasion, in my constituency means going against my preference politically.

There's absolutely no way he's going left lol 😆 😂 . He's not even centralist, he's more right leaning than any labour leader I have ever ever seen.

He backed corbyn because he was the party leader.... Rishi backed Boris when he was lying in the house of parliament. It means nothing... that's partisan politics for you...

Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story though lol. The sooner partisan politics comes to an end the better. Everyone should be independent and vote policy on merit not whips. It's corrupt.

blackpear · 04/07/2024 21:16

Godalmighty. If an OP starts an AIBU asking if she should be embarrassed and a poster says, yes she should be, that is in no way bullying. Sniping at someone’s spelling on the other hand is just spiteful.

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 21:17

From Google

Around 29,000 people were detected crossing the English Channel in small boats in 2023, down from 46,000 in 2022.

It’s gone down. I guess we’ll see what the impact is of new Labour approach

Country’s still gone to shite though.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/07/2024 21:19

OP maybe your embarrassment is due ri the absolutely shameful governments we have had since 2010. They have been pretty embarrassing to be fair.

Shakeoffyourchains · 04/07/2024 21:20

I repeat, there are many Labour supporters on MN who resort to calling anyone in favour of controlled immigration, bigots/racist. You might not, but many others do. Although I would say that Labour are really just paying lip service with the immigration thing. They’ve said they will instead target the people smugglers. Good luck with that. It’s needle in a haystack stuff - it would take a lot of time for little gain. Like whak-a-mole; take one of them out, and others will just take their place.

You'll have plenty of examples to hand to back that claim up I assume?

In my experience people are labelled bigots/racist for saying bigoted or racist things. Wanting controlled migration isn't inherently racist but ignoring the facts of the issue and ranting on about migrants 'taking our culture away' or wanting to stop people of a specific race/religion from moving here is.

And let's not pretend the current debate isn't rooted in racism and bigotry. Indian and Vietnamese visa overstayers make up a larger portion of illegal migrants than Syrian or Afghan channel crossers and yet no ones arranging protests outside the local takeaway or nailbar.

Then you have made a mistake. 80 seat majorities (like Johnson had) are no different from 40 seat ones. Or 120 seat ones.

We're not talking about asylum seekers.... work visa numbers are far higher... we are talking about the work visas... should the UK need to import the skills it needs or should we incentivise and spend uk tax payer money on training UK workforce in house??? We can talk all we like about apprenticeship but all the ones In my town are low skilled ones... We need to back graduates by giving UK companies tax breaks to give them 12 month work placements allowing them to gain the required work and industry experience. This is all easy stuff could be implemented and work extemely well within 5 to 7 years... speculate to accumulate so why oh why do we keep voting in people who are only interested in taking the easy greedy and short sighted way out?

Papyrophile · 04/07/2024 21:22

I like both Sunak and Starmer as candidates for PM. There's not much distance between them but the Tories are (deservedly) going to lose this election big time. So I have cast one vote for the Opoosition.

Some people i know are voting Tory tactically in margibal areas to try and rrduce the 'super majority' a bit so Labour are less likely to 'have a mandate' to do some of their more bonkers stuff. These people dont actually want them to win.

There's no such thing as a super majority in the UK.
It doesn't work like the US.
In the UK a vote of 1 is adequate to pass legislation.
It's another part of the Tories project fear.

I was explaining why recent immigration was high. We give a large amount of visas to students. We also give a large amount of visas to the NHS and their families. The NHS is one of the biggest organisations in Europe and has thousands of vacancies. How do we fill them all?

We have a shrinking population and need people to pay tax to support an aging population. We need a living wage to attract British citizens to low paid work. British workers such as those in trades, are often undercut by cheap foreign labour.

I was talking about deliberately harmful nasty legislation rather that ‘name calling’.
Legislation that has targeted real life people.
Sorry but you need to grow a pair if you can’t cope with gentle ribbing.

We weren’t talking about legislation though.
You either misunderstood or sidestepped the conversation between myself and @Namechange98242 about abuse towards others here.

Papyrophile · 04/07/2024 21:34

It's not that I haven't understood that a majority of one vote is a win. It's that I would prefer to have lively spirited discussion of the options on the table, and that requires having enough (and a range of) voices to debate the issues. Some of the players here seem hell bent on their route, and shouting down all dissenters. I am inclined to seek a workable consensus thereafter, but being shouted at by idealogues doesn't make me warm to your notion of politics.

Train our own staff?? You can't have lower immigration and an unskilled workforce, it's a simple as that.... thats my point I wasn't asking for an explanation of immigration I'm perfectly aware of the skills shortage, I've loudly pointed it out....

The point is you can't have the two... if you want lower immigration spend on education and in house skills training to lower immigration In the medium to long term.... don't do that and the numbers keep rising, services are under more pressure and housing gets to ever shorter supply leading to the cost of living becoming untenable.
