To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

Nearly 70k this year. That’s 70k (mostly individuals, not families) who we have to find accommodation for. With huge waiting lists for housing in this country already. If granted asylum, we could be looking at thousands more potentially - family members - following on. I’m all for immigration, if controlled and skilled or semi skilled. Quality over quantity. Guessing if you don’t think it’s a problem that you think we should have an open door policy?

Eh? Nobody wants an open door policy. It’s not a thing. No party has ever advocated for that.
Net migration to the U.K. last year was 685,000. 70000 is peanuts. Are you not worried about houses for the others? You shouldn’t be, incidentally. With more people here working tax take goes up. We can build more houses, employ more doctors etc. and maybe we could do something about all the houses owned by foreign investors with nobody living in them?

I can't find the full figures for this year, but up to May 2024, 10,170 people arrived. Nowhere near 70k. You're plucking figures out of thin air.

Most illegal immigrants have overstayed their visa. The majority of people coming in the boats claim asylum and most receive refugee status. They represent a tiny minority of immigrants into the UK.

Quality over quantity! Careful now, your humanity is showing 🙄

This is what other countries do successfully, ie Australia and Canada. They have a points system. You think they’re inhuman for controlling who they can accommodate?

EasternStandard · 04/07/2024 20:43

From Google

Around 29,000 people were detected crossing the English Channel in small boats in 2023, down from 46,000 in 2022.

It’s gone down. I guess we’ll see what the impact is of new Labour approach

The UK also has a points system.

Well if they phrased it like that then absolutely yes. You do realise those poor sods coming over in boats are actual human beings? Regardless of the number of points they might have.

Yeah, but why let pesky facts get in the way of prejudice?

Edited

in the last 12 months nearly 70k have arrived. I’ve double checked, and my figures are correct.

Nowhere near the same as the Australian or Canadian model. Not as stringent, and very flexible.

Ohhh come on seriously? It's a pretty lax point system when the numbers are this high.... People wanting lower immigration arnt racist we all do.... except the tories ran education and training into the ground and the economy is doomed without importing skills. They can't tell you that though so they blame the large numbers on asylum seekers instead.....

Of course we need to stop the boats but we also need to deal with the sheer lack of skills required to run the british economy. Old Nig bangs on about immigration but what's he going to do to prevent the british economy collapsing once he closes the door? His answer to every question is to blame immigration, no plans nothing. We need competency in government not more sheer incompetence.

You may be thinking of number of asylum granted?

Probably because immigration via work visas is a hell of a lot higher!

There are a lot of reasons why our immigration is high.

Three women prime ministers for a start

And what a success that’s been, the last one was outlived by a lettuce.

Still don’t see how the tories are great for women

northernerinthesouth2000 · 04/07/2024 20:57

The thing is if our government did more to support other countries and more to prevent or slow down the effects of the climate crisis we wouldn't have loads and loads of people trying to come to this country. When will people wake up and see that our meddling in others countries (e.g. past wars etc) plus the way we contribute to the climate disaster is what ultimately is resulting in a massive number of people fleeing their homes. If we do nothing about the climate crisis it will get worse! So if people are really serious about reducing immigration then perhaps they need to vote for greener policies.

And before anyone says anything I know these are not the only reasons for immigration it is very complex

Same OP!

Our Labour candidate was banging on about how much she loves the area and would do for us….turns out it was nearly verbatim of what she’d spun to her London constituents less than 18 months ago.

I also really hate the amount of paper and waste that gets put through the door in campaigning. Multiple copies of the same thing. So wasteful.

I voted for the councillor who is present and visible and active the other 11 months of the year.

Sunak made vague promises over changes to the EA should you vote for him. Apparently it's very easy to make these changes but there's no explanation as to why they haven't been made.

The Tories have been disastrous for women as we all know. They'll continue to be disastrous for women but some don't believe the evidence. That's why no one will answer your question.

OP it’s a real shame that so many on here are so intolerant. I hate to say it but you only ever see if from the left. Quick to shame, trying to look virtuous yet often don’t have a clue on actual policy.
Be proud that you have exercised your right to vote for what YOU think is best.

Mummy2024 · 04/07/2024 21:03

cupcaske123 · 04/07/2024 20:56

There are a lot of reasons why our immigration is high.

Nope there's only 1 and that is lack of skilled UK workforce.... badly funded and failing education a lack of government backed incentive for UK companies to acctually train UK Citizens.

The conservatives have been saying for 10 of 14 years they would lower immigration and yet it's doubled... you think they wanted to just grant all these visas? Of course they didn't but they have decimated the education system. De-incentivised UK businesses from training in house and made it cheaper to import skills instead.

The solutions are so clear, but when you put people who know nothing about struggle or the actual value of the £ or making a successful workforce in charge, this is what you get... the easy way out. The way to make the fastest buck with no thought of the crash 14 years down the line...

Making such a ridiculous sweeping statement negates any modicum of truth in your point

i have voted to have an Oppposition on this occasion. I reckon SKS has the election zipped tight, so I voted against the supermajority.
