To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

Yes that's always the councils line, it's all the tories fault, except the labour town next door to us is thriving. The excuse gets old eventually and when people are suffering the same as my friend in 3 years the excuse will be well the tories left a mess... the truth is they are all terrible every last one of them but please don't tell me that labour being in power is going to help these kids. The council did everything possible to keep a key stage 2 child with toddlers and had the cheek to say maim stream school could meet needs. There's no excuse for that.

Whose fault is the virtual collapse of the NHS ? Or the non functioning criminal justice system ? Or state schools struggling to educate our children despite best efforts ?

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 19:09

Notice how some of these posters cannot bring themselves to admit that the Tories are incompetent. It’s everyone else’s fault. Laughable.

Franzkafkascat · 04/07/2024 18:49

Isn’t that to do with council funding ? Cut by Tory governments in the name of austerity.
Our council has lost millions in funding from central government. We’ve had 6 out of 12 libraries shut plus Surestarts.
I thought most people knew about austerity.

Every town suffered austerity!!! Some have thrived, you know why??? The council's sought out investment into said towns thereby increasing tax income both in buisness and housing.... this austerity rubbish just won't wash.... life isn't all about handouts. Councils should attract investment, skilled work, decent housing make money of their own, not blame the government for turning the handout tap off.

Yep that's on the conservatives, no one said they should be voted back in.... doesn't mean we should put up with inadequate councils because they are flying the labour flag either....

Sunak is that you??

MeinKraft · 04/07/2024 19:14

YANBU. I'd be ashamed of myself too if I'd voted Tory.

Lol so wanting a town to fund itself instead of relying on handouts makes someone a conservative 😆 🤣 😂 thats hilarious... Labour really have gotten theirselves an awful reputation if this is the case...

Honestly I've never read anything like it... the fact you think your council shouldn't work for their wages and attract investment and decent jobs and housing says an awful lot about you as a person...

newnamethanks · 04/07/2024 19:19

Yeah, and plenty of councils are going bankrupt. Councils going bankrupt! Wtf? Why is that do you suppose? Have all those Tory councillors yes, Tories too - spent all the council tax on gin and fags? Or on duck houses. Or heating the stables for their expensive horses? No OP. They've been starved of cash by your mates in Central government but Oh! Labour might put up council tax.

Mummy2024 · 04/07/2024 19:21

NOTthisOldchestnut · 04/07/2024 19:13

I didn't vote Conservative btw lol 😆 😂 😅, i voted labour for government but I also didn't vote for the absolutely terrible council we have in this town either, I don't care if they wear red and call themselves labour, they've run this town into the ground. There's feral kids running around the town centre attacking people, closed shops everywhere kids with disabilities being denied a decent education. Rats running around the parks litterally sat on the grass, rat traps in supermarkets.Would you vote for that? All they do is blame the conservatives for lack of funding and try to deflect the fact they have made terrible decisions. Only 10 miles down the road the labour town is a complete success despite austerity.

You need to read up about austerity dear. The north was hit harder than the south as dear leader Rishi admitted last year. Cry us a river about your poor friend, obviously not trying hard enough.
What on earth is a Labour town ? Where is this mythical place 😂

Councils are reliant on central government and it's general knowledge that the Tory government have been starving them of cash - even Tory ran councils are begging for more cash. I think your thinking here is fundamentally flawed

It isn't Tunbridge Wells, that's for sure.

KasperBells · 04/07/2024 19:24

I haven’t voted labour. Have just taken my child out of specialist SEN school as can’t afford the 20 per cent VAT. I hope to god he will be ok, but here we are.

Goodness, yes. Imagine Britain being represented on the world stage by someone who is working class instead of the usual privately educated types.

Lots of people in politics are working class and are totally capable of presenting themselves in a classy manner.

Anger Rayner is just a loudmouthed chav who probably calls every ‘hun’, she will decimate this country.

A labour town is town run by a labour council.... its not rocket science is it?? Your saying her fighting for 3 years and taking the LABOUR council to court in front of a judge wasn't trying hard enough???

You don't vote for inadequate people to run your town because they wear red t-shirts... well I don't you do... austerity is a LOAD OF RUBBISH. There's plenty of investment in the town 10 miles up the road run by a LABOUR council.

Ummm, don't put words in my mouth please, and judge my whole character based on a 4 word lighthearted question. I can see you are very angry. The Conservative attitude is to blame everybody else, and preach about handouts, something you are giving a fine example of there. A lot of councils are underfunded, it is a fact. It doesn't always mean they don't perform enough to raise the cash.

What a very odd name you have chosen for yourself @respectisnotoptional. You should reconsider given your rash and insulting statement about Angela Rayner who, I suspect, has achieved in her life far more than you have in yours.

Apply for a ehcp if you haven't got one already and ask for your sons private school to be named on it. The council will have to pay the fees. You may have to fight for 3 years and go to court but you should get there in the end

If they performed enough they wouldn't be short of cash.... if a ceo made a loss year after year should they keep their job if they blamed the customers instead??? Only in politics is this being allowed and justified.

If you saw my town you would see why I'm angry.

Partisan politics ruins lives

See that is absolutely classism that someone above was talking about. Rayner is awful but let’s stick to the political reasons she’s not fit for the DP position rather than getting personal. It really undermines the argument to call someone who’s managed to work to her position a ‘chav’.

Labour voters are also voting for a party that wants to control immigration - just not stop it completely. Have you looked at the manifesto at all?

Did you read my post at all? I was talking about how people who vote with controlled immigration in mind, that they’re accused of being racist and bigots. Not talking about Labour’s manifesto……
