To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

I have no idea what this ‘back to square one’ backlash is, I can only assume some Tory bots have been also throwing it out and I missed the memo.

Do you have links to the Tories saying they will cut DLA or are you talking only about PIP?

Back to square one was a Tory meme that Rishi created.

Scrimp and save 😂 some of us couldn’t even afford it if we gave up Netflix and avocado for the next 20 years. My son is dyslexic, too late now but a school with smaller classes and more targeted help would have been great, but sadly not for the likes of us. Too poor.

There will be even less support when sen kids in private schools have to rejoin mainstream due to their parents no longer being able to afford it. And I’m trying not to play top trumps on disability, but who do you think will take more one to one time from TAs - a child with dyslexia or one with ASD who’s being overwhelmed by a busy classroom?

Isn’t it more about actual actions than words ?

Why resort to name calling.

That’s the point of these comments.

I struggle to see how anybody who is a single parent, on benefits with a disabled child would vote Tory @LostTheMarble I cannot believe this is genuine, I honestly cannot. Tories have had 14 years, and what good have they done? Look what they have done to the NHS, all of their lies, their lack of morality, and just everything.

I’m a semi retired teacher. I’ve read the education section too. What about this section don’t you like?

It's all lies... my friend has had to fight the labour council for 3 and half years to get her child into the specialist school she requires. When they eventually conceded they tried to put her child into a not yet opened school with the worst possible ofsted rating, my friend had to take them to court to stop it happening. She won that fight today... and she had to explain to them that today was the last day of the legal deadline they had to name the school before they said they would make enquiries. They've missed numerous deadlines, they are always missing the ehcp review deadlines they are absolutely terrible. She's cried herself to sleep for 3 years. Her daughter is 8 and had to be kept with the nursery kids for years because the school couldn't meet her needs and the council fought her at every turn.

I was talking about deliberately harmful nasty legislation rather that ‘name calling’.
Legislation that has targeted real life people.
Sorry but you need to grow a pair if you can’t cope with gentle ribbing.

You’re talking about a council trying to deal with Tory under funding of education there. Education (like the NHS) is falling over, but trying to blame the council trying to deal with it rather than the government funding it is daft.
There’s one party we know are liars. It’s the Tories. And they are the ones who got education to this terrible place.

The current system does not work for SEN children...having a small percentage that are lucky to get private school education isn't going to wash for the vast majority of SEN parents whose children are not so fortunate - so no, I am not voting for the status quo.

It’s utter waffle. ‘Improve expertise’ how? What is this grand plan? Most mainstreams are on their knees catering to sen kids as it is. Sen schools cater to those with the most complex needs - they already do! To the point that quite severely (but not severe enough) children like mine are on years long waiting lists to get in. There are three fully specialist sen schools within a 5 mile radius to me - none of them can take my 6 year old who is still cognitively a toddler. It’s not about meeting or understanding his needs - there’s no space. Where is the promise of more SEN schools? They don’t get that understanding SEN is not the issue, it’s recognising there needs to be more specialist schools and give mainstream settings and staff a damn break.

Zippedeedooda · 04/07/2024 18:49

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 18:31

I have looked it up, thoroughly. Labours education manifesto is one of the key reasons I didn’t vote for them, especially on regards to SEN.

One of the problems re SEN education is many parents send their kids to private school because they have SEN kids who for example need smaller classes.

Many of Those parents struggle to pay the existing fees and will need to move their kids to state with Labours tax policy. That will be traumatic for those kids in just having to move without even thinking about coping in a new class, people, system etc.
This move will have a knock on effect at state schools with more SEN kids.

Isn’t that to do with council funding ? Cut by Tory governments in the name of austerity.
Our council has lost millions in funding from central government. We’ve had 6 out of 12 libraries shut plus Surestarts.
I thought most people knew about austerity.

Ive also seen what the labour councils have done which is worse for meeting sen children’s needs as a pp said. Believe it or not, not everyone receiving benefits are living some horrendous life, too poor to feed themselves or their children or pay the bills. I will not go into here because MN is more horrific about benefits than they are about voting Tory, but one thing I have not struggled with in the years caring for my children is getting financial support for them.

Wonderfulstuff · 04/07/2024 18:54

LostTheMarble · 04/07/2024 18:23

Then don’t understand it, it bothers me very little. What are Labour proposing to do for disabled children that differs from the Tories? What are they going to do for familial carers such as myself?

There aren't just two parties. I would say that Ed Davey has put together a compelling case for Carers.

Appreciate your thoughts but at least some of the kids go to private thereby offloading an already stretched system of lots of SEN kids.
Also on your point
Labour have said nothing about more specialist schools they have said in their manifesto they support more inclusivity ie everyone together. With more SEN kids in state ( due to the tax ) and no more specialist schools I can’t see any kids coping in school.

Yes that's always the councils line, it's all the tories fault, except the labour town next door to us is thriving. The excuse gets old eventually and when people are suffering the same as my friend in 3 years the excuse will be well the tories left a mess... the truth is they are all terrible every last one of them but please don't tell me that labour being in power is going to help these kids. The council did everything possible to keep a key stage 2 child with toddlers and had the cheek to say maim stream school could meet needs. There's no excuse for that.

Therefore there will be less in state.

How does that help the vast majority of SEN children left behind in state schools. Let's keep things great for the small minority but stuff the rest of you? I'm sorry your argument does not wash. The whole system needs reforming
