To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

Blimey, that’s all very worrying !

Just asked my sons ( ages 20-23) why so many school age children would vote Reform.
Apparently Reform have been targeting TikTok etc.
Lots on social media.
I asked them what they thought this age group would vote and they all thought Reform

EasternStandard · 04/07/2024 17:43

Labour will have their own SM strategy if that’s the case

I’m sure they do. In fairness, it’s the Tories who have been criticised for their Cambridge Analytica nonsense - well, in fairness, Vote Leave, but they control the party now. I don’t think there’s any evidence for Labour paying a load of bots is there? While the evidence of my eyes shows lots of new posters suddenly asking disingenuous questions or starting pro Tory threads.

Thank you. She is indeed amazing but I don't think she actually came up with the idea. I just can't remember the name of the person who did!Grin

Rawls! It's the 'veil of ignorance'. It's v cool!

As much as I fundamentally disagree with Reform, I’m not one to write off the intelligence of the entire cohort of voters with a sweeping statement. But here we are…

If was anything like my daughter's school they didn't take it that seriously - some ironically voted reform, as they are second generation immigrants!

Hence the "or similar".

Nor did I shout anything similar

Yes TikTok is full of reform videos and tbh the videos they posted would make you like them. They look like a perfectly good party with what people would think are normal straight forward ideas.

Exactly. I voted conservative knowing that labour will not only win overall, they’ll win the seat in my constituency. My vote didn’t matter today but it mattered to me. Because I’m highly concerned about Labour and will be even more so after tomorrow.

How can you be ‘concerned’ about Labour but not the Tories ? This is what I can’t understand. Everyone seems to believe whatever promises Rishi or Jezza H make even if it’s clearly just scrabbling for votes (hence their sudden adoption of GC beliefs).
Total mismanagement of the country yet worried about Labour.

I'm more than happy to tbf although perhaps emotional intelligence is more accurate.

Indeed.

Nonsensical.

Alconleigh · 04/07/2024 17:56

You can vote for who you like, and shouldn't be abused for it. I'm just baffled at people who can look around this wasteland, including an NHS which is actively killing people because of lack of timely treatment, rivers running with sewage, housing in an unholy mess, schools falling apart and teachers leaving in droves, social care utterly broken, local services decimated (everything from libraries to street lighting), the disastrous interest rates after Liz's efforts, record divisions between the haves and have nots, I can't even start with Brexit and Covid, and conclude.....yep, I'll have a bit more of that please. Seriously - do you not actually live in the UK?

GivePeaceAChance · 04/07/2024 17:56

anotherside · 04/07/2024 17:30

Because the UK is an extremely unequal society. The top 5-10% in the UK are still doing nicely - they are wealthier than their French/German counterparts. That’s why that group will mostly vote Tory basically no matter what. Meanwhile the bottom 10% in the UK are right down near the bottom of the European league table.

And of course on top of these richest 5-10% of Brits, there’s easily another 10-20% of Brits who aspire/identify with that top 10%, and will also mostly vote Tory on that basis.

Plus 51% are women so guessing some at least will vote with their rights and those of all women and girls at the forefront of their minds

Plus farmers of course who may lose their families farmland when they die
People who want to save the Green belt from housing
Family businesses in the same boat as the farmers
Second property owners esp those using rental for their pensions ……………..

Haruka · 04/07/2024 17:57

Politics and religion are two things to never discuss. Vote for who you want, don't be ashamed, but also don't talk to anyone, because nothing good ever comes out of wanting to discuss your own truth. There are way too many ways of looking at your own reality.

Hopefully. DC did say there was lots of laughter. Fingers crossed it’s trying to be contrary, rather than being influenced by slick TicToc videos!

I’ve said it enough times over enough threads. It’s not just about the trans issue, their policies around women in general are non existent. Socially, in terms of healthcare, cost of living for single parent families. I find their education policies damaging in more ways than the Tories and that’s saying something. And no, I do not want people who actively push their ideologies as truths in the highest political positions in the country. Out of all the options on my ballot, the Tories were the least shit option for future government in my view, yes they have made decisions that have had severe effects but due to their austerity measures our economy as a whole has not collapsed.

Unlike the Tories, I don’t believe a single thing Labour have said about ‘change’. I believe Labour will take the slow but evident economic progress the conservatives have made, overspend again on their big unworkable ideas and we’ll be back to square one in 5 years. With a still shit education system. But at least they were kind to LGBT people, who are apparently still the most marginalised people in this country (after yet another month of every corporation going monetising from Pride).

DiscoBeat · 04/07/2024 18:01

If you're embarrassed you're voting for the wrong party.

Namechange98242 · 04/07/2024 18:03

northernerinthesouth2000 · 04/07/2024 17:20

Some of this is factual - most Tory voters are older... and that's not necessarily a negative thing to say.

Even the Tory's themselves admit they have problem attracting the youth vote!

Edited

Okay, I admit that one of those adjectives is factual 🙄

So based on the last 14 years of Tory rule you think they speak nothing but the truth? You trust this party when they have done nothing but lie? You are happy for the NHS to collapse? It is well on its way. I guess you are a private health care patient so you're alright.

I think this makes you a coward.

If those are your values, you should stand by them.

I think the implication is that they are not genuine posters but paid as part of a social media influence strategy. They’ll melt away when the election is done. I do think there are some posters this is the case for.

Because people genuinely cannot hold a view that is different to your own? 🙄

NOTthisOldchestnut · 04/07/2024 18:11

Oh and if people are embarrassed they're voting for the Tories, is this a lack of morality selfishness thing? I don't understand being embarrassed if you stand by what they value, and what they don't.

I VOTED LABOUR!! I AM READY FOR CHANGE. There you go, I stand by my vote, and couldn't give a stuff about what anybody thinks. Do I think they're perfect no? Do I agree with every single thing? No. Do I think they'll do a better job than the Tories, a million times yes.

I think it’s evident from some of the petty, childish responses on this thread, why some people don’t feel comfortable disclosing who they voted for.
