To be a secret Tory voter and feel embarrassed about it?

SecretToryVoter · 04/07/2024 12:41

I’ve just gone to do my vote and had to admit to myself that I’m one of those secret Tory voters and would be embarrassed to admit it to friends / family!

A month ago I was adamant that I would be voting Labour but ended up changing my mind for a number of reasons

  1. Keir seems to have a number of grand ideas of what he wants to do but no substance behind how he’s going to do it (where is he going to find an additional 6,500 teachers as just 1 example)
  2. Womens rights
  3. my Labour candidate has been helicoptered in and doesn’t look good on paper whereas the Tory candidate is a local, well respected councillor
  4. Tory policy is closer to my values overall

anyone else had to admit to themselves that they are a Tory at heart for this election?

I’m what they call politically homeless but will vote nonetheless based on what I feel is right for my constituency. I think we all have political leanings, but politicians often disappoint us and do not best represent the party they serve. So I don’t see any issue with being Conservative at heart but be dismayed at those leading the party. It’s noble to vote for the greater good but in reality most people decide based on how their life is going and whether they think it would be better or worse under a different party.

I do stand by my original point, Tories are often shy as many people are hostile of this standpoint.

Actually I vote for the greater good, and couldn't sleep at night with millions in the bank voting Tory. I completely agree with @cardibach

Three women prime ministers for a start

(LibDem lurking)

☄️ Well played, @wellington77 . 🔥

I agree being Tory is not of itself an indication of selfishness. I think supporting these particular Tories is. And I think if more people did as @Shortfatsuit ’s mother advised t(e country would be a lot better off - and a functioning society is ultimately better for everyone.

I’d never tell anyone what to vote, but I don’t really get those still voting Tory.

We are in total shit order. Highest taxes since the war, nothing functioning or working properly, and endless Tory psychodramas.

I do get those voting Labour, LD, Green, Independent, or even Reform, but why would anyone, other than a political masochist, vote for more punishment?🤷‍♀️

Because the UK is an extremely unequal society. The top 5-10% in the UK are still doing nicely - they are wealthier than their French/German counterparts. That’s why that group will mostly vote Tory basically no matter what. Meanwhile the bottom 10% in the UK are right down near the bottom of the European league table.

And of course on top of these richest 5-10% of Brits, there’s easily another 10-20% of Brits who aspire/identify with that top 10%, and will also mostly vote Tory on that basis.

I honestly can't fathom why you'd vote for a party that you would be ashamed to tell other people you support. You wouldn't want to admit that you agree with them, but think they should be running the country?

I don’t think the OP is ashamed necessarily. Probably can’t be bothered dealing with other people’s reactions.

OP, I’m a labour voter in Scotland and I voted no to independence many moons ago now. I’ve had to put up with comments from SNP loons.

you can vote for who you want to vote for. I’m sure many people will vote Tory. Remember social media is generally quite a liberal leftie place and I’m not sure real life always mirrors it

OhmygodDont · 04/07/2024 17:32

Not sure labour should really do voting from 16. One of the local secondary schools held. A vote today… annon voting like real. 60% of the vote went to reform, followed by cons, labour, Lib Dem and green got 1 vote.

Edited

But the overwhelming majority of the U.K. population don’t have millions in the bank and so will probably vote based on their needs, wants etc.

I am looking forward to seeing how many of the 'concerned about Labour' posters are still active after tonight. Will be revealing.

What difference will it make. It’s clear Labour are going to win.
Do you think Conservative voters on this thread don’t know that.

I think the implication is that they are not genuine posters but paid as part of a social media influence strategy. They’ll melt away when the election is done. I do think there are some posters this is the case for.

Most young people usually vote Labour and that’s clearly why it’s a Labour policy so they can stay in power for as long as possible. I’m amazed at your local schools vote though

Exactly. I voted conservative knowing that labour will not only win overall, they’ll win the seat in my constituency. My vote didn’t matter today but it mattered to me. Because I’m highly concerned about Labour and will be even more so after tomorrow.

Really!??
Are there new Mumsnetters here in ‘disguise’
Think I’ll do a spot of research.

My DC came home and said that Reform won in their mock election (grammar school).

I was too tbh. It would appear the teen boys out voted the teen girls I reckon.

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/07/2024 17:40

I'd be embarrassed too.

Anyone using women's issues as a reason to vote tory has a screw loose. The rape and sexual assault conviction rates are utterly appalling all thanks to your women friendly tory government.

Ah interesting that it wasn’t just ours where the reform vote among the teenagers was strongest.

There’s another thread where a fair few are coming back with Reform

I agree Starmer wants to shore up power for as long as possible but maybe young people will think differently

A demonstration that a grammar school education does not equal intelligence.

Labour will have their own SM strategy if that’s the case

birdglasspen2 · 04/07/2024 17:46

I’d never be ashamed to say who I vote for. Although this vote has been one of can’t vote for them, them or them and have to vote for the only one left. Doesn’t feel great. Use to believe that who I voted for was what I wanted but now it’s just one group of $&$6) against another!!

I think TikTok is very strong on influencing the younger vote.

I deliberately tried to hunt some out and I must say reform was flooding my screen saw a couple of labour ones, one quite smugly tbh of a sleeping happy dog with a quote alone the lines of how they will sleep well knowing they will be elected and yes it was their page. Actually put me off a bit tbh the smugness. Did not see any conservative ones or Lib Dem or greens, no workers party or any of the others.

As much as I fundamentally disagree with Reform, I’m not one to write off the intelligence of the entire cohort of voters with a sweeping statement. But here we are…

I'm embarrassed I voted Labour.... I really didn't want to I wish we had an alternative voting method because I would absolutely not vote either of the major parties. I'm a life long labour voter but I cannot stand kier starmer. Tbf aswell my life under the conservatives has actually improved in someways. However the sheer hypocrisy one rule for them mentality coupled with the absolute mess they've made of housing in this country and the mishandling of the housing market, making it impossible for me to buy a home possibly for the rest of my life means I will never ever vote for them, I hate the right leaning politicians such as suella and her crownies rees mogg etc, make it absolutely impossible for me to vote for them. They are eroding our very own human rights and democratic freedoms and disguising it using dog whistle politics.
